he finds the meaning contained in them; such as: “A wise son is saved from the heat, but a lawless son becomes wind-blasted in the harvest;” and again: “Take care of the green things in the field, and you shall cut grass, and gather mountain fodder, that you may have sheep for clothing;” 28.344 and again: “If you sit to dine at the table of rulers, consider carefully what is set before you.” And things similar to these are called the understanding of true righteousness; since some have understood what is just in different ways, some saying that it is just to give back what one has received to keep; others, to give evil for evil, and good for good. But it happens that such definitions are not precise. For do not say, "As he has treated me, so I will treat him; I will repay him for what he has done to me." For this reason this teaches true righteousness, that this is what is truly just, to give to each his own. “First, honor the Lord from your just labors, and offer to him from the fruits of your righteousness.” Then: “Honor the king, and to parents render what is due, and to all what is equal.” And this is one type; a second is to make one's own soul just, to preserve equality, so as not to incline to inequality; but to the rational part: Let not an evil counsel overtake you, which forsakes the teaching of youth, but do all things with counsel, and let your thoughts be judgments; so that each one may judge himself, and have every desire be good; for every desire of the just is good, and the desire of a just man is acceptable. But according to the spirited part: “Do not be a companion to an angry man, nor lodge with a wrathful friend. For a fool brings out all his anger, but a wise man husbands it in part.” And a man thus regulating himself, and keeping the proper action of each part of the soul healthy and unharmed, will be one who knows true righteousness. And to direct judgments is, in the first place, to judge justly according to the law of God, as it says: “Open your mouth with the word of God, and judge all men soundly. Judge the poor and the weak. For he who says of the wicked, 'He is just,' is accursed to peoples, and hated among nations. For it is not good to show partiality in judgment.” This must be said openly; then, so that whatever judgment one makes of others, he may direct this judgment also to himself, and test himself, rebuking himself, if anger gets the better of him; restraining himself, if desire abounds; and rousing himself, if the reasoning part is asleep, saying: “How long will you lie down, O sluggard?” For by thus leading himself justly, and becoming his own accuser, he will learn to direct judgment, and he will not hear from another: “You who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who say, 'Do not commit adultery,' do you commit adultery?” for just as one who journeys and directs his path reaches the end; so he who directs judgments will be known as just and wise. And parables are called sayings, like images of the things being said. For from them, through the likeness, what is being said is understood. For thus the Lord spoke, as Mark says: “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? Or with what parable shall I set it forth?” as a parable is that which is said by way of likeness. For saying, “The kingdom of God is like,” he later added: 28.345 “For this reason I speak to them in parables.” Therefore, such are the parables: “As a fall of snow in harvest time benefits the scorching heat, so a faithful messenger benefits those who sent him;” and again: “As winds and clouds and rains, so are those who boast of a false gift;” and things similar to these. And sayings of the wise are words not sophistical, nor deceiving by plausibility, but made precise; not spoken as by command, but as known by them, and offered as their declarations. Such are: “Of the heart
