when it rejoices, the face flourishes; but when it is in sorrows, it is gloomy;” and, “An upright heart seeks perception; but the mouth of the uninstructed will know evil things;” and, “Hatred stirs up strife; but friendship covers all who are not contentious;” and, “He who despises a matter will be despised by it; but he who fears the commandment, this one is sound.” For the words of other men are for the most part ambiguous; but those of the wise, such as these are, are true, and have been made precise from every side, so that they cannot even be contradicted. And other men know the matter from the end of the action, for example: that the unjust man is worthless, and the adulterer evil; and this would be clear to anyone; but the wise foretell the beginnings of actions, and proclaim beforehand, as it were, symbols of the soul’s movements; so that each one, knowing the beginnings of evils, may be on guard, such as are the things previously mentioned: “Hatred stirs up strife; but friendship covers all who are not contentious.” For the contentious person has the beginning of such evil from hatred, and one would not say that the contentious person loves. Again, on the contrary, the one who is not contentious has a sign of love; and one would not call a loving person contentious, as again this: “Every idle person is in desires, and a quick-tempered person acts with lack of counsel.” For he signified the soul of the idle person to be sunk in all desires, and he showed the quick-tempered person to have not even one right counsel. And generally these proclaim moral principles rather, saying the beginning of the action from which it arises, that hatred precedes contentiousness; and love precedes not being contentious; and evil pleasure precedes idleness; and lack of counsel precedes being quick-tempered; and the beginning of being despised is despising the law; and the fear of God precedes soundness; and the beginning of the soul's destruction is to have an unguarded mouth; and rashness precedes someone's being terrified. And so by analyzing each saying, you will find it was said and written so that those who hear and learn the beginnings of evils and of goods might flee the wicked things, and do the good things. But riddles and dark sayings, which are indeed so secure as to annoy the one who encounters them by revealing nothing, nor offering any clue; but nevertheless, when they are investigated, they show the meaning within themselves. Such are: “The leech had three daughters 28.348 loved with love; and these three, and the fourth was not satisfied to say, Enough. Hades, and the love of a woman, and Tartarus, and the earth not being filled with water, and water, and fire, will not say, It is enough;” and again: “And there are three things impossible for me to understand, and the fourth I do not recognize: the tracks of an eagle flying, and the ways of a serpent on a rock, and the paths of a ship sailing the sea, and the ways of a man in his youth,” and however many such riddles there are; for they indicate certain other things, and present the thought of others; and while they are unclear, they have a hidden meaning. Book 15, Ecclesiastes. And Solomon wrote this book, as has been said before. And it is called Ecclesiastes, because the writer himself named it thus, saying in the beginning: “The words of Ecclesiastes, the son of David, king of Israel in Jerusalem; Vanity of vanities, said Ecclesiastes.” And Solomon might be called by various names: wise, on the one hand, because he partook of wisdom; prudent, on the other, because prudence of truth was in him; and educated, because he had true education from the Lord. He was called Ecclesiastes, therefore, because he himself assembled the peoples, and spoke the things of the spirit. And in this book he appears to be philosophizing about natural contemplation. For since
