And he himself judges the case concerning Susanna, and condemns the elders as slanderers; and he both relates and interprets the king's dreams. He also sees perfect visions, two concerning the kingdoms, and two concerning the coming of the Savior, and the cessation of Jerusalem, and the coming of the antichrist. And he narrates concerning the testimony of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and concerning their hymn; and that they themselves were saved, but those who stoked the fire were burned up, and the king repented; and that he himself was twice thrown into the lions' den; the first time, because when the Babylonians were praying to Darius the king, he alone prayed to God; the second, because he destroyed Bel, and killed the dragon in the time of King Cyrus; and he himself was saved, and came up from the lions' den; but those who plotted against him were thrown into their own. 28.368 The end of the canonized books of the Old Testament, amounting to twenty-two, according to the number of the letters among the Hebrews. For such are the letters among them, as we have said before. And likewise we must speak also concerning the other books of the Old Testament, those not being canonized, but only read, as has been previously shown. Book of Esther. The book is so called, because it also contains the history concerning Esther, how God through her saved the Jews, who were about to be destroyed as a whole race, but struck down Haman, who wished to plot against them. And the history took place in Susa, and is as follows. Artaxerxes the king, having cast out his own wife, sought in his kingdom the most beautiful and fairest of all to take as a wife for himself. And Esther was found, being a Jewess by race. And there was also Mordecai, a kinsman of hers from the captivity that happened under Zedekiah in that same land. The king, therefore, having promoted one of his own, named Haman, commanded everyone to bow down to him. But when Mordecai, on account of his worship of God, did not bow down to him, Haman was angered; and having learned that he was a Jew, he persuades King Artaxerxes, and writes, so that all the Jews in his kingdom would be utterly destroyed in a single day in the 12th month. Therefore, when Mordecai learned this, he mourned, and fasting, he fell before Esther, asking that help come from her. Therefore Esther, having fasted and prayed to God, adorned herself with royal adornment, and though not summoned (for it was not permitted to enter unsummoned), she nevertheless went in out of season to the king, trusting in her prayer instead of the occasion; then, as the king was marveling at the strange event, she fell from fear. But God changed the king's anger into a disposition of gentleness, and rising up he held his wife, and urged her not to be afraid; but he also bid her to ask for whatever she might wish. And she asked both the king himself and Haman to come to a banquet, not once, but a second time. So Haman, overjoyed and elated at being deemed worthy to be invited by the queen, was all the more puffed up against Mordecai, and having caused a great beam of wood to be cut,
