to abide in the faith, signifying, that Paul himself is a minister of the Gospel, in which they were instructed; then he also discusses the law and the foods in it, and about days and years, which he explains, and proves that all old things and circumcision have now been made void; and he advises them not to be led astray by those who use sophistry and wish to lead them astray. And finally, having exhorted here also parents and children, and husbands and wives, slaves and masters, and having given other advice concerning morals, he completes the Epistle. He commands them, however, that when the Epistle is read among them, they should have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that they in turn should read the one from Laodicea. Eighth, to the Thessalonians. He sends this from Athens, having seen them before and having stayed with them. The occasion of the Epistle is this: The Apostle, having suffered many afflictions in Berea, and in Philippi of Macedonia, and in Corinth, and knowing what things he had also suffered in Thessalonica, fearing lest the Thessalonians, hearing what he had suffered in the aforementioned cities, might be tempted by the tempter and be scandalized; and having learned that they were also very sorrowful over those who were dying, he sends Timothy to them with this Epistle. And first he strengthens them in the faith, so that they might not be shaken by the afflictions; for he reminds them that they had been taught in their catechism to endure afflictions, and that they had suffered nothing strange from the Jews, who also killed Christ. For he said it is characteristic of Christians to be afflicted in this life. And having exhorted them much to conduct themselves as they had received from him, he also writes concerning those who have died, comforting them and teaching them not to bear it grievously. For death is not destruction, but a path to resurrection. Then he also teaches them about the times, so that, knowing the day is uncertain, they may always be ready and not pay attention to anyone proclaiming about it. For he says the coming will be in such a way that those who are left and are found in that day will not precede those who are raised from the dead. For he teaches that the change of all happens at the same time. In addition to these things, urging them to improve in morals, he always exhorts them also to rejoice in hope, and to pray, and to always give thanks to the Lord, adjuring them to read this Epistle to all the brethren, and so he concludes it. 28.424 Ninth, this again to the Thessalonians. He sends this from Rome. The occasion of the Epistle is this: Certain idle and disorderly persons in Thessalonica were going around and taking advantage of the brethren, as though the coming of the Lord were already at hand. And they were deceiving their hearers, as if the Apostle declared this, and having heard it by the Spirit. Therefore, when the Apostle learned these things, he writes the Epistle. And first he approves of their increasing faith, and that he boasted in them, because they nobly endure afflictions for Christ's sake; and he also comforts them, that there will be vengeance from God against those who do wrong; then he also teaches about the coming of the Savior, that they should be persuaded by no one, nor be troubled, neither through the Spirit, nor as if he had written it, nor to think at all that it is already here, nor that it will happen before, unless the apostasy comes first, and after it the Antichrist, the son of perdition, whose coming he indicates will be with signs and wonders of falsehood according to the working of Satan. Then having exhorted them to stand nobly, and to hold fast to the traditions as they were taught by him, he commands them to have no fellowship with those
