Fragmenta in epistulam i ad Corinthios 1 Kor 15,1-2
Since some in Corinth were saying that the soul is mortal and the resurrection of the body superfluous, Paul refutes their error, and says: the gospel, through which you were called from the polytheistic error to the knowledge of the true God, through which you are confirmed and have salvation, I am making known to you. I am making known to you the gospel of God, so that you may know that the mention of the resurrection of the dead is not mine, nor anyone else’s.
1 Kor 15, 3-4 He delivered to me the gospel, that the Savior, having come and truly worn a body, for the sake of raising the dead, having died and been buried, rose again. Then, so that the more simple-minded might not be disturbed by the death of Christ, he adds: according to the scriptures; for he suffered such things as the prophets proclaimed beforehand concerning him. Since, therefore, he died and was buried and rose again, it follows that human beings are to rise through him who rose for them, he having become the cause of the resurrection. But if it is said that Christ died and was buried, this must be understood of his body, not of his soul. Since, therefore, they believed in the resurrection of the Savior, they are culpable for not also accepting along with the Savior's resurrection the resurrection of all. 1 Kor 15, 5-9 Of this his resurrection, eyewitnesses and worthy witnesses are those who were first with him, then five hundred. These things, he says, I deliver, which those who deceive you cannot contradict. However, even if the dead body rises, it is yet incorruptible and spiritual; wherefore he did not appear to all, but to whom he willed. Thus after the ascension he appeared to Paul, who, being modest, calls himself one born out of due time, aware that he came to be an apostle from repentance, and as 7 one not even worthy of the name, as a persecutor. Yet even if formerly such, now he is a teacher, having this by gift. 1 Kor 15, 10-11 Even if formerly a persecutor, now he is a teacher by the gift of God which was not in him in vain, since, being strengthened by it, he endured more abundantly the struggles for the pious faith. And the whole accomplishment which he had from choice, he attributes to the grace given to him from God1 Kor 15, 12-17 If someone says the dead are not raised, since it is necessary that with Christ having risen all will rise, does he not then necessarily say that Christ has not been raised either? But if he did not rise, see how many absurdities arise: we who said this will be found false witnesses against God, and although you foolishly assented to the resurrection of the Lord, yet also, by faith in the one who rose, having thought you were freed from sins, you have not cast off your sins. 1 Kor 15, 18- He who does not accept that the human soul is immortal and for this reason disbelieves in the resurrection, such a one is pitiable, depriving himself of the eternal life for which the saints are rich, obtaining worthy rewards. Even if some disbelieve, yet we expect a resurrection, knowing that Christ has become the firstfruits, a resurrection of those who have fallen asleep; through whom all will experience immortal life, for it is a consequence. 1 Kor 15, 21-22 Since through Adam’s transgression of the law all who are from him have died, so also in Christ who knew no sin they will be made alive. But some of the heretics say that only the soul of the just is made alive in Christ, because it is not ** for the making alive will be of all who died in Adam. 1 Kor 15,23-24a As the resurrection of Christ is before all things, it will be first in honor; then in order the faithful are ranked at the coming of Christ according to the proportion of faith they have, after which is the end, thus distinguished from the beginning, but that for the sake of which are all other things that contribute to 8 salvation, but it itself is not for the sake of another
