Another Moses, having been gifted in his life, had left Egypt, this life here, and the things of this life, and having in a way become outside of this life, saw God shining as in a bush in the roughness of life; and just as the rose from the thorn, so from the toils of virtue a fragrant plant is naturally grown for an odor of God. Thus released from base thoughts, and having put off earthly things like sandals in the place of God, he comes to his 96.772 own mind, and sees God as it is possible to see, and again comes to Egypt, many and infinite multitudes from Egypt, and from the bitter tyranny of Pharaoh the world-ruler, intending to translate and translating them to the upper land of promise through the Red Sea of the divine water and blood, having lived as citizens in the desert of the passions, and having turned aside Amalek by the extension of hands raised in the form of a cross to Him who stretched out His hands on the cross for us, and having received from Him the trophy-bearing power. Therefore, having spent a two-year period in the cave, and having kept his soul and body alike sleepless, as if incorporeal, being engaged in the study of the divine oracles, he banished all ignorance, having brought into his dwelling the light of true knowledge. But if he had to partake of sleep for the recovery and strengthening of his nature, let it be that he performed the service of nature, so that for the two-year period he did not recline at all, not by night, not by day. Thus the parts below the belly are mortified, and the powers of the kidneys are relaxed, and the burning of the belly at the navel is extinguished, and he becomes powerless to be useful to himself. ιʹ. And having returned again to his homeland, and becoming of the rank of presbyter in the Church, and in this way, as a grateful child, having paid back the cost of his upbringing to his nurse-mother, by divine providence he is transferred to the purple of the cities, and he marries the daughter of the great high priest. For it is not pious for such a luminary to be hidden under a bushel, upon whom the timeless and eternal light has rested, but to be placed on a high and conspicuous lampstand, so that, as from a far-seen and most central vantage point, like a trumpet of beaten gold, he might resound through all the ends of the earth. Who so directed and ordered the Church, and showed a humble mind, in the high preeminence of his dignity? who so reined in anger and wrath, as to acquire a lawful meekness, which abhors indeed everything opposed to virtue, but vindicates the just from the unjust? who was so great in love, from which mercy springs? of whose virtue living pillars even now bear the symbols. For every word of his was a subject of mercy, so that he drove those who praised his words to a habit of compassion and sharing. For he persuaded them to lend their own things to God, giving corruptible and fleeting things to receive in exchange things that are stable and incorruptible, and to treasure up in heaven the contribution of compassion, which is not spent. nor plundered by a thief, to cleanse sins by alms, and injustices by pity for the poor; to break bread for the hungry according to the Gospel, and to give a cup to the thirsty; to cover the nakedness of the naked, and to clothe the unclothed, and to shelter the homeless who are in the open air; to visit the sick, and to direct his foot toward the prison, to reap mercy by mercy. ιαʹ. And who thrust away wrath, and persuaded the flock to thrust it away, which closes the divine bowels of compassion to those who have them? For as you have done, so be it to you, he says; with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. For to him who forgives, it will be forgiven. And conversely, the consequence has spoken; for it will not be forgiven to him who does not forgive. Who condemned envy and slander,

Εἰ δὲ καὶ ὕπνου μεταλαχεῖν ἔδει πρὸς τὴν τῆς φύσεως ἀνάκτησιν καὶ ἀνάῤῥωσιν, ἔστω τὴν λειτουργίαν ἐτέλει τῆς φύσεως, ὡς τὸ διττὸν ἔτος οὐδ' ὅλως ἀνακλιθῆναι, οὐ νύκτωρ, οὐ μεθ' ἡμέραν. Οὕτω νεκροῦται τὰ ὑπογάστρια, καὶ τῶν νεφρῶν τὰς δυνάμεις ἐκλύεται, καὶ τῶν ἐπ' ὀμφαλοῦ γαστρὸς τὴν πύρωσιν παρασβέννυται, καὶ ἄτονος πρὸς τὸ ἑαυτῷ χρησιμεύειν γίνεται. ιʹ. Αὖθίς τε πρὸς τὴν πατρίδα παλινοστήσας, καὶ τῆς Ἐκκλησίας ἐν πρεσβυτέρου τάξει γινόμενος, καὶ ταύτῃ ὡς εὐγνώμων παῖς τῇ τιθηνῷ μητρὶ ἀποτίσας τὰ θρέπτρα, θείᾳ προνοίᾳ πρὸς τὴν ἁλουργίδα τῶν πόλεων μετατάττεται, καὶ τὴν θυγατέρα τοῦ μεγάλου ἀρχιερέως νυμφεύεται. Οὐ γὰρ ὑπὸ μόδιον κρύπτεσθαι ὅσιον φωστῆρα τοιόνδε, ἐφ' ᾧ τὸ ἄχρονον καὶ ἀΐδιον φῶς ἀναπέπαυται, ἀλλ' ἐπὶ λυχνίαν ὑψηλὴν καὶ περίοπτον ἀνατίθεσθαι, ἵν' ὡς ἐξ ἀπόπτου καὶ μεσαιτάτης περιωπῆς σάλπιγξ οἷα χρυσήλατος πάντα περιηχήσῃ τὰ πέρατα. Τίς οὕτως Ἐκκλησίαν ἴθυνέ τε καὶ ἔταξε, καὶ χθαμαλὸν ἐπεδείξατο φρόνημα, ἐν ὑψηλῷ τοῦ ἀξιώματος προτερήματι; τίς οὕτως ὀργὴν καὶ θυμὸν ἡνιόχησεν, ὡς ἔννομον πρᾳότητα κτήσασθαι, ἀποστυγοῦσαν μὲν πᾶν ὅ τι τῆς ἀρετῆς ἀντίθετον, καὶ διεκδικοῦσαν δὲ ἐξ ἀδίκων τὸν δίκαιον; τίς ἀγάπην τοσοῦτος, ἐξ ἧς ἔλεος φύεται; οὗ τῆς ἀρετῆς μέχρι νῦν ἔμψυχοι στῆλαι τὰ σύμβολα φέρουσι. Λόγος γὰρ πᾶς αὐτῷ ἐλέου ὑπῆρχεν ὑπόθεσις, ὡς εἰς ἕξιν ἐληλακέναι συμπαθείας καὶ μεταδόσεως τοὺς τῶν ἐκείνου ἐπαίοντας λόγων. Ἔπεισε γὰρ Θεῷ τὰ οἰκεῖα κιχρᾷν, φθαρτὰ διδόντας καὶ ῥέοντα ἀντιμετρεῖν τὰ ἑστῶτα, καὶ ἄφθαρτα, καὶ θησαυρίζειν ἐν οὐρανοῖς τῆς συμπαθείας τὸν ἔρανον, οὐ δαπανώμενον. Οὐδὲ κλέπτῃ συλώμενον, ἐλεημοσύναις τὰς ἁμαρτίας καθαίρειν, καὶ τὰς ἀδικίας ἐν οἰκτιρμοῖς πενήτων· πεινῶσι διαθρύπτειν τὸν ἄρτον εὐαγγελικῶς, καὶ διψῶσι διδόναι ποτήριον· γυμνῶν περιστέλλειν τὴν γύμνωσιν, καὶ ἀμφιάζειν ἀνείμονας, καὶ ἀστέγους ὑπαιθρίους σκέπειν· ποιεῖσθαι νοσούντων ἐπίσκεψιν, καὶ πρὸς φρουρὰν τὸν πόδα προίεσθαι, καρποῦσθαι τῷ ἐλέῳ τὸν ἔλεον. ιαʹ. Μῆνιν δὲ τίς ἀπώσατο, καὶ ἀπωθεῖσθαι τὸ ποίμνιον πέπεικε, τὴν τὰ θεῖα σπλάγχνα τῶν οἰκτιρμῶν τοῖς ἔχουσι κλείουσαν; Ὡς γὰρ ἐποίησας, ἔστω σοι, φησίν· ᾧ μέτρῳ μετρεῖς, ἀντιμετρηθησομένῳ. Ἀφέντι γὰρ ἀφεθήσεται. Καὶ ἔμπαλιν ἀκολουθία πεφώνηκεν· οὐκ ἀφεθήσεται γὰρ οὐκ ἀφιέντι. Τίς φθόνον, καὶ βασκανίαν κατέκρινε,
