1.162 These things are contained in the first tome of the first book of the refutation against the twenty heresies, in which there are 20 heresies, as follows: First, the mother and prototype names of all the heresies, from which five mothers the others have sprung, and these are the first four: a. First, Barbarism, which exists by itself, having lasted from the days of Adam for ten generations until Noah. And it is called Barbarism from the fact that the people of that time had no leader or single accord, but because each person was a rule unto himself and became a law to himself according to the preference of his own will. b. Second, Scythianism, from the days of Noah and afterwards until the building of the tower and of Babylon, and after the time of the tower for a few years, that is, until Peleg and Reu; who, having inclined toward the region of Europe, to the part of Scythia, were joined to their own nations from the age of Terah and beyond, from whom the Thracians have come. 1.163 c. Third, Hellenism, beginning from the times of Serug through idolatry and as each at that time was aligned, according to a certain superstition, toward what was more civilized and toward customs and ordinances. When idols indeed began to be set up, the races of men, to which they then adhered *, deified them, at first depicting by means of colors and making images of those honored among them long ago, either tyrants or sorcerers or certain ones who had done something in life seeming worthy of memory, either through strength or robustness of body *; then, from the times of Terah, the father of Abraham, they introduced the error of idolatry also through statues, having honored their own forefathers through images and having fashioned those who had died before them, at first from the potter's art, then imitating them through each art: builders by carving stone, silversmiths and goldsmiths by crafting them from their own material, and so also carpenters and the rest in succession; And the Egyptians together with the Babylonians and Phrygians and Phoenicians became the first introducers of this religion, of both statue-making and of mysteries, from which most things were transferred to the Greeks from the age of Cecrops and 1.164 in succession, and afterwards, much later, proclaiming as gods those around Cronus and Rhea, and Zeus and Apollo and the rest in succession. And they are called Hellenes from a certain man, Hellen, one of those who dwelt in Hellas and who gave the name to the country, but as others say, from the olive tree that sprouted in Athens. And the Ionians became their leaders, as accuracy has it, from Javan *, one of the men who built the tower, when the languages of men were divided, for which reason all are also called Meropes, because of the divided speech. But later in time Hellenism was established into heresies, I mean, of the Pythagoreans and Stoics and Platonists and Epicureans and the rest. But a character of piety existed at the same time, and the law according to nature, being practiced apart from these nations, setting itself apart from the foundation of the world until now, being in the middle of Barbarism and Scythianism and Hellenism, until it was joined to the piety of Abraham. d. And afterwards, Judaism, having received its character from the times of Abraham through circumcision, and in Moses, the seventh from Abraham, through that which was given through him
