Homily on the synaxis of the incorporeal beings
1 Not in vain do we celebrate the angels, paying them a tribute and reward for their benefactions toward us; for they do not cease with hymns and ineffable voices to propitiate the master in heaven for our sins. And that these things are so in fact and not an empty word, lacking testimony, the divine gospel teaches; for when they saw the heavenly one on earth, the uncircumscribed one in swaddling clothes, they did not hide the mystery from men, but immediately announced it to the shepherds, they supposed them to share in the benefaction, with one word they acclaimed the glory in heaven and the peace on earth; Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. The philanthropic army of the philanthropic God does not, being incorporeal, look down upon those woven together in flesh and sinews and bones, it does not endure the passion which we endure against each other; for the healthy among men loathe the weak, the unharmed the wounded, the sober the debauched, the chaste the licentious, the continent the incontinent, when it is necessary to suffer with and through compassion to offer medicine to the one who suffers; for those who sympathize do not partake of another's sickness, but they themselves impart their own well-being.
2 But the mind of the angels, not looking to the flesh, but embracing the kindred wing of the soul, rejoices seeing the grace in it also dancing among men. And somewhere one of the angels, astounded at the virginal birth-pangs, said: The only-begotten son who is in the bosom of the father, who causes the holy spirit to spring forth for us, the creator of the angelic choir, who curved the heavenly vaults and commanded the sun to run its daily course, and decreed the moon to travel by night, who established the earth without foundation and bridles the sea, lies in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes. Born from an unwed womb, he seems to be meditating something great; and the meditation of God is salvific. I know in part what is being meditated; he is contriving against the diabolical arts, he wants to recall the exiled, to release the bound, to renew the one perishing. I rejoice together with human good fortunes; I find again the one in paradise who conversed with God. This was what bit the devil; for always being boastful and puffing up great things, he now utters humble and sullen and not grandiloquent things; for he is ignorant of what is being done, but his conscience pricks him, and the memory of the ancient deceit which he wickedly brought upon the first-formed men, introducing death in place of life and exchanging idolatry for godliness.
3 Such things then the choir of angels, looking upon our well-being. And rightly do we also honor those who love us and intercede on our behalf to the master. Or have you not heard from the prophet Daniel how he introduces the archangel Michael contending with the overseer of the Persians for the freedom of the Israelites? For the one was compelling the people to be enslaved to the Persians, while the other was zealous to release them from captivity. And Michael conquers the adversary; and the Jews, crossing the Euphrates, again took possession of their ancestral hearth and renewed the burnt temple of Solomon, the work having extended for forty-six years; for sometimes being hindered by their neighbors, and sometimes checking those hindering them, they finally achieved their desire, with Nehemiah completing the end of the building for them. From this starting point they said to the lord: This temple was built in forty-six years; and you in three days
