casting them out and the angel who punishes them and the impulse of the teaching that deceived them. Being carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness. 6 Ps 1,5 The ungodly will rise, but they will not be judged because they are self-condemned. For he who does not believe in me, he says, is already judged, having been shown to be condemned by his own unbelief. Ps 1,6a He makes his own the deeds of the righteous; for this is what "Knows" means here. 7Ps 1,6b Since it has been shown that the ungodly do not rise in judgment, it has been revealed how "Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to reproach and everlasting shame." For how do they not rise to everlasting reproach and shame, those who are raised to be judged, since the judgment itself makes their sins manifest? If this has become clear, why has it not been said that "All who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to reproach and everlasting shame"? For these things have been written only about the sinners who come to judgment and the righteous who are raised to everlasting life, with the ungodly not being raised for any of these things, as there will be no examination of them after the resurrection.
8 Ps 2,8 Since all men are moved by choice (for they have free will),
no one is good or evil by essence; and since only he who partakes of virtue becomes akin to God, every such person happens to be God's inheritance. Therefore, when Israel was good, it was said of him, "Jacob became the Lord's portion, Israel the lot of his inheritance." it is shown that this nation was so named not merely by lot, but on account of its goodness, from what is said about God by the holy men, "He has chosen for us his inheritance, the beauty of Jacob which he loved." But if one becomes an inheritance of God by keeping the commandments and by faith in God, he who transgresses the commandments of God and falls away from faith in him is cast out from such an honor, just as, on the other hand, he who turns from evil and does good becomes God's lot, although he was not so before. This consequence remaining, Israel, who was formerly God's heir on account of piety, having become an apostate from God, fell away, not receiving the savior who had come for the benefit first of him, and then of other men. It was necessary, therefore, for another to be brought in in his place, being made up from many nations and coming to the gospel. Therefore, "Ask of me, and I will give you" was said for our sake, not the Son's; for it shows that nothing is added to him, but to those who need him; for as they are given to a physician and a teacher, so that they may become healthy and knowledgeable from him. But also "for your possession the ends of the earth" might be understood more simply thus: your teaching will prevail to the ends of the earth, as the gospel is preached in all creation under heaven. If it is possible for "the ends of the earth" here to be called those who by life and thought have passed beyond the earth, consider it. 9 Ps 2,10 Even now, receive understanding, since the crucified one has risen from the dead, and you, rulers, be instructed, knowing that he whom you thought to encompass with death, has risen, having undone deadness; for this will exhort you to serve in fear him who was plotted against by you, once you know that he is God, against whom you had gathered. this servitude in fear will cease when progress has been made, so that a divine exultation with trembling comes to be in you; for although exultation happens to be a certain joy occurring reasonably, yet in God it occurs with trembling. With this agrees, "Shout to God with a voice of exultation, for the Lord most high is terrible;" for since he in whom the exultation is is most high and terrible, one must have it with trembling. 10 Ps 2,12a-c The "Quickly" must be assigned to "Lay hold of instruction," spoken by hyperbaton, so that the sequence of the phrase is thus:
