messenger» would someday come among men, they said, and that he would be established as a teacher for all the nations throughout the whole world, both Greek and barbarian, of the true knowledge of God and of the piety toward God the creator of all things, which the gospel preaching contains; and that he himself would be a child and would be called son of man, and the race from which he would descend, and a certain strange manner of his birth from a virgin, and what is most paradoxical, that they did not pass over in silence the place of his birth in Bethlehem, which is proclaimed to all who even to this day hasten from the ends of the earth to see it, but they cried this out in clear words, just as they also prophesied the times of his appearance, in which this one precisely came into the world, just as the same men, anticipating them, foretold the events. 1.1.3 It is possible for you, taking the study in hand, to see with your own eyes in the prophetic predictions which have been mentioned, all contained together, the paradoxical miracles of our savior Jesus Christ himself, which are testified to by the divine evangelists, and his inspired and all-virtuous teachings about the true piety. 1.1.4 And why should one wonder, when they also proclaim explicitly the new way of piety announced by him to all men, and the calling of his disciples and the teaching of a new covenant. 1.1.5 Yes, and in addition to these things, the disbeliefs and contradictions of the Jews against him, the uprisings of rulers, the envy of teachers, the betrayal by one disciple, the slanders of enemies, the accusations of false accusers, the condemnations of judges, the dishonorable insults, the extraordinary scourgings, the blasphemous revilings, and on top of all, the shameful death, and in addition his wonderful silence, and meekness and endurance, and how much incredible patience and forbearance. 1.1.6 The most ancient oracles of the Hebrews, through what they have foretold, clearly present all these things openly about one who would come at some time in the last days and would suffer such things among men, bearing witness to the revival from the dead after death of the one indicated, his appearance to his disciples, the imparting of the divine spirit to them, his ascent into heaven, the enthroned establishment of his kingdom from the Father, and his glorious second coming which will be again at the consummation of the age. 1.1.7 In addition to all these things you will hear laments and wailings of each of the prophets, variously lamenting and bewailing all the evils that the nation of the Jews was destined to suffer on account of their impiety toward the one who was foretold, how their kingdom, which had lasted from their fathers of old down to those times, would suffer complete destruction after their audacity against Christ, how their ancestral laws would be abolished, how they would be deprived of their ancient worship, how they would be cast out from the autonomy of their ancestors, how instead of free men they would be made slaves of their enemies, how their royal metropolis would be burned with fire, how their venerable and holy temple would suffer burning and utter desolation, how their city would be inhabited by foreign nations instead of its former inhabitants, how they would be scattered into all the nations throughout the whole world, how no pause from their evils nor any respite from their misfortunes would any longer be hoped for by them, which things, they say, are plain even to a blind man, since to this day the appearance of the words is demonstrated by the events themselves, from that very first day on which they raised their godless hands against Christ, drawing upon themselves the beginning of their evils. 1.1.8 But it was not for the divine men to rest their predictions on gloomy things, nor to extend their foreknowledge only to what was sorrowful, but changing again to what is bright, they proclaimed beforehand messages of good things all at once for all men at the coming of Christ, preaching the good news of the knowledge of God to every nation and race of men in place of the rejection of the one nation, and escape from demons, release from ignorance and error, and of light and piety

ἄγγελον» ἐπιδημήσειν ποτὲ εἰς ἀνθρώπους ἔφασαν, πάντων τε τῶν ἀνὰ πᾶσαν τὴν οἰκουμένην ἐθνῶν Ἑλληνικῶν τε καὶ βαρβάρων διδάσκαλον ἀληθοῦς θεογνωσίας καὶ τῆς εἰς τὸν τῶν ὅλων δημιουργὸν θεὸν εὐσεβείας καταστήσεσθαι, ᾗ τὸ εὐαγγελικὸν περιέχει κήρυγμα· καὶ τοῦτον αὐτὸν παιδίον ἔσεσθαι καὶ υἱὸν ἀνθρώπου κληθήσεσθαι, γένος τε ὅθεν κατάξει, καί τινα ξένον ἐκ παρθένου τρόπον αὐτοῦ τῆς ἀποτέξεως, καὶ τό γε παραδοξότατον, ὅτι μὴ τὸ πᾶσι τοῖς ἐκ περάτων γῆς εἰσέτι σήμερον ἐπὶ θέαν σπεύδουσι βοώμενον τῆς ἐν Βηθλεὲμ γενέσεως αὐτοῦ χωρίον σιωπῇ δόντες παρῆλθον, ἀλλὰ καὶ τοῦτο λευκοῖς ὀνόμασιν ἐξεβόησαν, ὥσπερ οὖν καὶ τοὺς χρόνους τῆς ἐπιφανείας αὐτοῦ, καθ' οὓς ἀκριβῶς οὗτος ἐπεδήμει τῷ βίῳ, ὥσπερ φθάσαντες οἱ αὐτοὶ τὰ τῶν πραγμάτων ἐθέσπισαν. 1.1.3 πάρεστι δέ σοι μετὰ χεῖρας ἀναλαβόντι τὴν σπουδὴν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἰδεῖν ἐν ταῖς δηλουμέναις προφητικαῖς προρρήσεσι πάσας ὁμοῦ περιεχομένας τὰς ὑπὸ τῶν θεσπεσίων εὐαγγελιστῶν μαρτυρουμένας αὐτοῦ δὴ τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Χριστοῦ παραδόξους θαυματουργίας καὶ τὰς ἐνθέους αὐτοῦ καὶ παναρέτους περὶ τῆς ἀληθοῦς εὐσεβείας διδασκαλίας. 1.1.4 καὶ τί δεῖ θαυμάζειν, ὅτε καὶ τὸν νέον τῆς εὐσεβείας τρόπον τὸν πρὸς αὐτοῦ πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις κατηγγελμένον διαρρήδην ἀνακηρύττουσι κλῆσίν τε μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ καινῆς διαθήκης διδασκαλίαν. 1.1.5 ναὶ μὴν ἐπὶ τούτοις καὶ τὰς Ἰουδαίων εἰς αὐτὸν ἀπιστίας καὶ ἀντιλογίας, ἀρχόντων τε ἐπαναστάσεις, διδασκάλων φθόνους, ἑνὸς μαθητοῦ προδοσίαν, ἐχθρῶν δια βολάς, συκοφαντῶν κατηγορίας, δικαστῶν κατακρίσεις, ὕβρεις ἀτίμους, μάστιγας ἐκτόπους, δυσφήμους λοιδορίας, ἐπὶ πᾶσι τὸν ἐπονείδιστον θάνατον, αὐτοῦ τε ἐπὶ τούτοις σιωπὴν θαυμάσιον, πραότητά τε καὶ καρτερίαν, ἀμήχανόν τε ὅσην ὑπομονὴν καὶ ἀνεξικακίαν. 1.1.6 ταῦτα δὲ πάντα ἄντικρυς περὶ ἑνὸς ἐν ὑστάτοις ποτὲ χρόνοις ἥξοντος καὶ τοιαῦτα ἐν ἀνθρώποις πεισομένου σαφῶς, δι' ὧν προειλήφασι, τὰ παλαίτατα Ἑβραίων παρίστησι λόγια, ἐπιμαρτυρούμενα τὴν μετὰ θάνατον ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀναβίωσιν τοῦ δηλουμένου, τὴν τοῖς αὐτοῦ μαθηταῖς φανέρωσιν, τὴν τοῦ θείου πνεύματος εἰς αὐτοὺς μετάδοσιν, τὴν εἰς οὐρανοὺς ἄνοδον αὐτοῦ, τὴν πατρὸς ἔνθρονον βασιλείας ἵδρυσιν, τὴν ἐπὶ συντελείᾳ τοῦ βίου δευτέραν αὖθις ἐσομένην ἔνδοξον αὐτοῦ παρουσίαν. 1.1.7 Ἐπὶ πᾶσι τούτοις θρήνους ἀκούσῃ καὶ ὀλοφυρμοὺς ἑκάστου τῶν προφητῶν διαφόρως ὀλοφυρομένου καὶ ἀποκλαιομένου ὅσα τὸ Ἰουδαίων ἔθνος τῆς εἰς τὸν προκηρυχθέντα δυσσεβείας ἕνεκα μετελεύσεσθαι κακὰ ἔμελλεν, ὡς τὸ βασίλειον αὐτῶν, ἄνωθεν ἐκ πατέρων εἰς ἐκείνους διαρκέσαν τοὺς καιρούς, παντελῆ καθαίρεσιν μετὰ τὴν κατὰ Χριστοῦ τόλμαν αὐτῶν ὑπομενεῖ, ὡς οἱ πάτριοι αὐτῶν νόμοι καταλυθήσονται, ὡς τῆς παλαιᾶς θρησκείας αὐτῶν ἀποστερήσονται, ὡς τῆς ἐκ προγόνων αὐτονομίας ἐκπεσοῦνται, ὡς ἀντ' ἐλευθέρων δοῦλοι τῶν ἐχθρῶν καταστήσονται, ὡς ἡ βασιλικὴ μητρόπολις αὐτῶν πυρίκαυστος γενήσεται, ὡς τὸ σεμνὸν αὐτῶν καὶ ἁγνὸν ἱερὸν ἐμπρησμὸν καὶ ἐσχάτην ἐρημίαν ὑπομενεῖ, ὡς ἀντὶ τῶν πάλαι οἰκητόρων ὑπὸ ἀλλοφύλων ἐθνῶν ἡ πόλις αὐτῶν κατοικισθήσεται, ὡς εἰς πάντα τὰ ἔθνη καθ' ὅλης οἰκουμένης διασπαρήσονται, ὡς οὐκέτ' αὐτοῖς ἡ τῶν κακῶν παῦλα οὐδέ τις ἀνάνευσις τῶν συμφορῶν ἐλπισθήσεται, ἃ καὶ τυφλῷ, φασί, δῆλα εἰσέτι νῦν τὴν τῶν λόγων ὄψιν αὐτοῖς ἔργοις ἐνδείκνυται, ἐκ πρώτης αὐτῆς ἡμέρας, ἐξ ἧς ἀθέους ἤραντο κατὰ Χριστοῦ χεῖρας, τὴν τῶν κακῶν ἀρχὴν εἰς ἑαυτοὺς ἐπισπώμενοι. 1.1.8 Οὐκ ἦν δ' ἄρα τοῖς θεσπεσίοις ἀνδράσιν ἐπὶ σκυθρωποῖς τὰ τῶν προρρήσεων ἱστάναι, οὐδὲ μέχρι τῶν λυπηρῶν ἐπιτείνεσθαι τὴν πρόγνωσιν, ἀλλὰ γὰρ εἰς τὸ φαιδρὸν μεταβάλλοντες αὖθις ἀγαθῶν ἀγγελίας ἀθρόως ἅπασιν ἀνθρώποις ἐπὶ τῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ παρουσίᾳ προεκήρυττον, ἀντὶ τῆς ἑνὸς ἔθνους ἀποβολῆς πᾶν ἔθνος καὶ γένος ἀνθρώπων θεογνωσίαν εὐαγγελιζόμενοι, καὶ δαιμόνων ἀποφυγήν, ἀγνωσίας τε καὶ πλάνης ἀπαλλαγήν, φωτός τε καὶ εὐσεβείας
