24 Where evil enters, there also is ignorance, but the hearts of the holy will be filled with knowledge.

25 An unmerciful monk will be in want, but he who feeds the poor will inherit treasures.

26 Better is poverty with knowledge than wealth with ignorance. 27 The ornament of the head is a crown, but the ornament of the heart is the knowledge of God. 28 Acquire knowledge and not silver, and wisdom above great wealth. 29 The righteous will inherit the Lord, but the holy will be nourished by him. 30 He who has mercy on the poor destroys anger, and he who feeds them will be filled

with good things. 31 In a gentle heart wisdom will rest, but the throne of dispassion is a soul engaged in the active life. 32 The contrivers of evil things will receive an evil wage, but to the contrivers of good things will be given

a good wage. 33 He who sets a trap will be caught in it, and he who hides it will be captured

by it. 34 A gentle worldly person is better than an irascible and wrathful monk. 35 Anger scatters knowledge, but long-suffering gathers it. 36 As a strong south wind on the sea, so is anger in a man's heart. 37 He who prays continually escapes temptations, but of the negligent heart

thoughts agitate. 38 Let not wine gladden you and let not meat delight you, so that you may not nourish

the flesh of your body, and shameful thoughts will not cease from you. 39 Do not say: "Today is a feast and I will drink wine, and tomorrow is Pentecost and I will eat meat," because there is no feast for monks nor for a man to fill his belly. 40 The Lord's Passover is the passing from evil, and his Pentecost is the resurrection of the soul.

41 The feast of God is an amnesty from evils, but sorrows will seize the one who bears a grudge. 42 The Lord's Pentecost is the resurrection of love, but he who hates his brother

will fall a dreadful fall. 43 The feast of God is true knowledge, but he who heeds false knowledge will end

shamefully. 44 Better is fasting with a pure heart than a feast with impurity

of soul. 45 He who destroys evil thoughts from his heart is like one

dashing his infants against the rock. 46 A sleepy monk will fall into evils, but he who keeps vigil like a sparrow

will be. 47 Do not give yourself over in vigil to empty tales and do not reject spiritual words, because the Lord watches your soul and will not acquit you of any evil.

48 Much sleep thickens the mind, but a good vigil refines it. 49 Much sleep brings on temptations, but he who keeps vigil will escape them. 50 As fire melts wax, so a good vigil melts evil thoughts. 51 A man sleeping is better than a monk keeping vigil over vain thoughts. 52 An angelic dream gladdens the heart, but a demonic dream

disturbs it. 53 Repentance and humility have set the soul upright, but almsgiving and gentleness

have strengthened it. 54 Remember always your exodus and do not forget the eternal judgment, and there will not

be sin in your soul. 55 If the spirit of acedia comes upon you, your house do not
