if the other is true; and it is not possible to affirm and deny the same thing concerning the same thing with truth.

But that they not only say but also think things contrary to us, no one, I think, of those who are right-minded and not of one mind with them will gainsay. And that they set forth doctrines contrary not only to us, but also to the very Word of truth, which has been preserved among us undiminished and unaugmented and altogether unalterable, all of you know precisely even without proof, I mean the whole body of the pious. It will be shown nevertheless, (p.72) God granting, also through this discourse, so that "every mouth" that contradicts "may be stopped," and that which is wavering may be established in one confession.

But O God of all, the only giver and guardian of true theology and of the dogmas and sayings according to it, the only most monarchical Trinity, not only because You alone rule over all, but because You also have in Yourself the one sole sovereign principle, the only uncaused monad, from which and to which are brought forth timelessly and causelessly the Son and the Spirit, the Holy Spirit, the Lord, who has existence by procession from God the Father, and through the Son is given and sent and made manifest to those who rightly believe in You; O only-begotten Son, who has existence by generation from God the Father and through the Holy Spirit is formed in the hearts of those who believe in You and dwells therein and is invisibly seen; O Father, alone unbegotten and unproceeding, and, to speak comprehensively, uncaused, the only Father of the unoriginated and co-honored lights with You, one dominion, one power, the creator of the created lights and those under Your hand, the giver of all knowledge, who has produced manifold ideas of things knowable and known and has suitably and naturally implanted knowledge in those who know, for the noetic beings, simple and impassible intellections, for the sentient beings, manifold and passible sensations, and for us mixed beings, both; who also by Your ineffable goodness graciously bestows the knowledge of Yourself, as far as is possible, to Your rational creatures alone, grant to us also to theologize now in a manner pleasing to You and in harmony with those who from of old have pleased You in deed and word; so that we may both refute those who do not theologize of You in a manner pleasing to God, and may establish in the truth those who seek You in truth, that we all may know You as the one sole fount of divinity, the only Father and producer, (p. 74) and Your one and only Son, but not also producer, and Your one Holy Spirit, and only a production, but not also a creature; and we may glorify one God, in a divinity that is one and simple, but rich, so to speak, and unconstrained, and be glorified in return by You in a rich deification and a triply-radiant effusion of light, now and unto the incomprehensible ages. Amen.

This prayer is common to all who worship one principle. But what do you say, you who speak of two principles in the Godhead? For what if you do not say this openly, but it is inferred from what you say? Such are the deep things of Satan, the mysteries of the evil one, which he whispers to those who lend him their ears, not relaxing and lowering the tone of his voice, but hiding the harmfulness of the thought. Thus also to Eve, I suppose, he whispered.

But we, taught by the divine wisdom of the Fathers not to be ignorant of his thoughts, the origin of which is for the most part obscure to the many, would never receive you into communion as long as you say the Spirit is also from the Son.

For in speaking thus, do you not openly persist in adding, first, to the declarative theology concerning the holy and adorable Spirit of the

εἰ ἀληθής ἡ ἑτέρα˙ καί τό αὐτό περί τοῦ αὐτοῦ καταφῆσαι καί ἀποφῆσαι σύν ἀληθείᾳ οὐκ ἔνι.
