being found, and never being separated from [the] [God] of all. The devil once laughed a broad laugh against human nature, and rejoiced in our misfortunes as feasts. But his laughter was for three days; but his lament is eternal; and a broad laugh prepared for him a broader lament, an unceasing tear, an inconsolable wailing; a dart in the heart. This dart the Commander forged against the enemy in the virginal furnace, just as he willed, and as he wished, through fire; and having tempered it by the energy of the invincible divinity, and having dipped it in the water of the pure baptism, and having sharpened it by the impassible passions, and having polished it through the mystical resurrection; through himself with his whole army he put the fiend to death. What speech, then, could describe either our joy or his misfortune? For he who was once an archangel, is now the devil; he who once dwelt in the heavens, is now seen as a serpent crawling on the earth; he who once rejoiced with the cherubim, is now shut up in the prison of the swine, suffering; whom we shall rout, having resolved on things contrary to his purpose; by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ; to whom be the glory and the power unto the ages of ages, Amen.
