The hopelessness of the things that came upon him did not weaken his patience, but with so many successive waves coming upon him, as it were, the vessel was not submerged. Have you seen the patience of a righteous man? Have you seen a crown being woven for the righteous man through patience? See for me also the poor Lazarus, or rather, wealthier than the rich, how he too through patience rests in the bosom of Abraham. For this Lazarus sat by the gate of the rich man, wasting away with hunger; while that rich man filled his belly with various foods every day; but Lazarus did not have even bread to satisfy his belly; this one fed parasites, and this one was licked by dogs; this one had crowned craters of wine, and that one soothed his wounds; this one had a house with a golden roof and Lacedaemonian marble and golden capitals, and Lazarus did not have a hut; this one was clothed in silks and fine woolens, and Lazarus did not have a rag. But see for me the end of patience. So the rich man died—for the death of the rich man is death; for the death of sinners is evil; but Lazarus also died, or rather, was translated. This one was carried by angels, this one had his citizenship in heaven, and that one was being burned in Gehenna; this one was enjoying the waters in abundance, and that one was being burned in Gehenna, desiring a drop; this one was resting in the bosom of Abraham, and that one was being stung by the sleepless worm.
And see, if you please, the patience of the blessed Lazarus. He did not say to himself, 'I, living in virtue, am poor, and this one, living in injustice, is rich;' servants stood by this man, offering him indispensable service; this one is called blessed by men, and this one was called wretched; cooks served him with varied skill, bakers, chief bakers; baths in the city, and baths in the country, and gardens and paradises. This one enjoyed honor every day; the earth offered to him unfailingly, and he did not share with the needy; the trees, weighed down with fruit, looked to the earth, and that one, by the weight of his evils, did not look up to heaven; but Lazarus sat alone, pushing away the storm of poverty with patience. Have you seen the patience of a righteous man? Have you seen the cruelty of a rich man? Have you seen the endurance of a poor man? Have you seen the inhumanity of the rich man? Have you seen what a reward patience has blossomed? See for me also the three young men spending time in the furnace, and treading upon the furnace as if it were thin air with patience, how these youths dared such a torment, and did not consider the threat of the flame, nor what bitter tortures were about to come upon them? But they were so lofty in the mindset of patience, that they said: 'But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.' But nevertheless they dared his torments, and walked about in the furnace and hymned God, as if in a meadow and paradise or some grassy place; and as one living in luxury, so they walked about, and said: 'Blessed are you, Lord God of our fathers, and praised and glorified is your name for ever.' And see patience sprouting forth, bringing humility in its wake: 'For you are just in all that you have done to us.' And yet, even if they had committed sins, the power of the 60.732 flame wiped them all away; but nevertheless with patience they said: 'For you are just in all that you have done to us.' Have you seen the patience of the righteous? They did not consider that their bodies were about to commune with fire, but they were found more steadfast than adamant, and so brave, that they did not stand in one place in the furnace. And walking about they blessed and glorified God.
And not only they alone, but they also called upon all creation with themselves, the sun and the moon, the stars of heaven, the sea and rivers, springs and lakes and the earth, the mountains, the hills, the glens, the
