in the middle, Jesus went up into the temple and was teaching. The Jews therefore were amazed, saying, "How does this man know letters, having never learned?" They were amazed, but they did not believe; they were astonished at the excess of His wisdom, but they did not repent, being filled with the terribleness of malice. They saw the physician offering the medicines, and being sick they did not accept the cure; they saw the one who delivers, and they loved their captivity; having in their midst a meadow of good things, they gathered thorns; with the harbor present, the terrible ones were shipwrecked; while wisdom poured forth divine teachings, they did not want to wash away the filth of their murders; while Christ spread the wings of His philanthropy, the offspring of vipers did not endure to be sheltered. For how often, He says in the Gospels, would I have gathered your children, as a hen her brood, and you were not willing? The Jews therefore were amazed, saying, "How does this man know letters, having never learned?" Oh, the state of things! You do not know the Law, O Jew, and you do not know the teachings of the law? You say, "How does this man know letters, having never learned?"

Tell me, O enemy of the truth, how did Adam, having never learned letters, give fitting names to the beasts? You do not question the servant, yet you call the Master to account, saying, "How does this man know letters?" Jesus answered and said, "My teaching is not Mine, but the Father's who sent Me." And when is God sent by a change of place? and when does He who fills all things come to a place where He is already present? The word is to the Jews, the saying is not to those who know how to learn piously. My teaching is not Mine, but the Father's who sent Me, who also for Me before you all 61.743 put forth the testimony from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son." Concerning Me John also cried out, "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." For Christ is truly the Lamb, who today went up into the temple, and John put forth the voice of truth concerning Him. For being the voice, he fittingly praised the Word; being the lamp, he made known the rays of the sun; as the forerunner, he announced the one coming; as the dawn, he proclaimed the morning; as the soldier, he published the name of the king.

Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away 61.744 the sin of the world; the lamb, whom a virgin ewe, having conceived without seed, bore without corruption, and the manger, as if a grassy place, received Him as a child, and the Jordan washed Him, John baptized Him, Judas sold Him to the Jews, Pilate slaughtered Him, the tomb presented Him, and we have bought Him, and with His fleece He has clothed all of us who were naked from the transgression of Adam. To Him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

μεσούσης, ἀνέβη ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν, καὶ ἐδίδασκεν. Ἐθαύμαζον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι λέγοντες· Πῶς οὗτος οἶδε γράμματα, μὴ μεμαθηκώς; Ἐθαύμαζον, ἀλλ' οὐκ ἐπίστευον· κατεπλήττοντο τὴν τῆς σοφίας ὑπερβολὴν, ἀλλ' οὐ μετεγίνωσκον, τῇ τῆς κακίας πεπληρωμένοι δεινότητι. Ἐθεώρουν τὸν ἰατρὸν προτιθέντα τὰ φάρμακα, καὶ νοσοῦντες τὴν θεραπείαν οὐ προσεδέχοντο· ἔβλεπον τὸν ῥυόμενον, καὶ τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν ἐφίλουν· ἔχοντες ἐν μέσῳ τῶν ἀγαθὼν τὸν λειμῶνα· τὰς ἀκάνθας συνέλεγον· τοῦ λιμένος παρόντος, ἐναυάγουν οἱ δεινοί· σοφίας προχεούσης τὰ θεῖα διδάγματα, τῶν φόνων ἀποπλύνασθαι τὸν βρόμον οὐκ ἤθελον· Χριστοῦ τὰς πτέρυγας τῆς φιλανθρωπίας ἁπλοῦντος, σκέπεσθαι οὐκ ἠνείχοντο τῶν ἐχιδνῶν τὰ γεννήματα. Ποσάκις γὰρ, φησὶν, ἐν τοῖς Εὐαγγελίοις, ἠθέλησα ἐπισυναγαγεῖν τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν, ὡς ὄρνις τὰ νοσσία ἑαυτῆς· καὶ οὐκ ἐθελήσατε; Ἐθαύμαζον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι λέγοντες, Πῶς οὗτος οἶδε γράμματα, μὴ μεμαθηκώς; Ὢ τῶν πραγμάτων! Νόμον ἀγνοεῖς, Ἰουδαῖε, καὶ ἀγνοεῖς τὰ τοῦ νόμου παιδεύματα; λέγεις, Πῶς οὗτος οἶδε γράμματα, μὴ μεμαθηκώς;
