to the five planets, so that they might be known by men and only for that, and he called the 1st planet-star Kronos, the 2nd Zeus, the 3rd Ares, the 4th Aphrodite, and the 5th Hermes; for the two luminaries God called sun and moon. And Seth, being 205 years old, begot another Enos, who hoped to call upon the Lord. After him his descendants and Seth, having been forewarned from above, wrote the future things concerning the flood on stone and earthenware tablets, signifying that the universe was about to be consumed and destroyed either by fire or by water, and if by fire, the writings on the earthenware tablets would be saved, but if by water, those on the stone ones. And when the flood came and destroyed everyone, only Noah and his sons and his daughters were saved for the second renewal of the world. And after the flood Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, composed the astronomy, having found the naming of the stars by Seth and his children, as has been said, written on a stone tablet; which pillar after the flood remained in the mountain of Siris, and is there until now, as Josephus says. Adam, therefore, according to the most wise and divine prophet 7 Moses, being 230 years old begot Seth, and he dies on the day of the transgression; for since the day of God has a duration of a thousand years, having lived only 930 years he dies. He is said to have been buried in the land of Jerusalem, as Josephus says. And Seth, being 205 years old, begot Enos, and after this he lived 707 years, and he died having lived in all 912 years. concerning whom it is said “the sons of God went in to the daughters of men,” that is, those from Cain. For the men of that time called him a god because he discovered the Judaic letters, the names of the stars, and in addition to these things, marveling at his great piety, so that he was also the first to be invoked and named god, just as the Lord says to Moses, “I have made you a god to Pharaoh,” and concerning the virtuous and spiritual and the judges he said, “You shall not revile the gods, nor speak evil of the rulers of your people.” Reasonably let the children of Seth and Enos and Enoch be understood as sons of God and sons of the gods according to Symmachus, who, being caught by licentiousness, went in to the daughters of Cain, from whom those from the fitting 8 unions become giants, on the one hand, through the righteous Seth, strong and very great, and on the other hand, through the unrighteous and profane Cain, wicked and most evil. And Enos, being 190 years old, begot Cainan, and after this he lived 740 years, and begot Maleleel, and he died having lived in all 910 years. And Maleleel, being 165 years old, begot Jared, and after this he lived 730 years, and he died having lived in all 895 years. And Jared, being 162 years old, begot Enoch, and after this he lived 800 years, and he died, concerning whom the translation is spoken, having lived in all 962 years. And Enoch, being 165 years old, begot Methuselah, and after this he lived 802 years, and he died having lived in all 969 years. And Lamech, being 188 years old, begot Noah, and after this he lived 565 years, and he died having lived in all 753 years. Scripture therefore mentions two 9 Lamechs, one from Cain, and the other the father of Noah; for Noah was begotten through Lamech not from the one of Cain who also murdered a man and a youth, but from a later one and from the namesake from Seth; for that one says “I have killed a man for wounding me, and a young man for bruising me.” and as one who committed two murders and took the two women, Eldan and Selan, as wives, he blames himself as being worthy of punishment seventy times seven, because from Cain, he says, vengeance is taken sevenfold, but from Lamech seventy times seven, for this reason he is punished more greatly, just as Lamech also suffered thus; for he killed the brothers of the righteous Enoch, who through faith on account of these things prayed not to see such a death, and having been heard, was translated. And Enoch was from the righteous Seth, from whom Christ is descended, being genealogized according to the
