it was sufficient, if she followed every good work. This one surpassed the one blessed by the apostle both in years and in deeds. For how could she who was deemed worthy of prophecy and was a receptacle of the Holy Spirit and who announced the signs of the presence to all who were awaiting the Lord's incarnate coming, not have surpassed all, as the evangelist said concerning her, as you just heard: And she, he says, Anna, coming up at that very hour, gave thanks to the Lord and spoke to all who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem.

Have you seen the greatness of Anna? She pleaded for the Lord concerning Him, speaking His things in His presence. O what wondrous deeds! A widow, but she rebuked the chief priests and scribes, and by rebuking them she won over all the people, announcing the redemption that was to be in Jerusalem by the superintendence of the Lord, speaking to those present and declaring the signs of the Lord. Anna saw the Lord as an infant, gifts and purifications being offered for him and with him, and she did not stumble at the littleness of his age; Anna confessed the infant as God, a physician, a mighty redeemer, a remover of sins. Do not simply pass over Anna’s words. Declaring the Lord's power to all present, she said to those who were gathered: Do you not see this child, who draws from the breast, who borrows a nipple, who rests on his mother's bosom, who for now does not deign to walk upon the earth with his feet, who is circumcised on the eighth day? Do you not see this child? This one established the ages, this one vaulted the heavens, this one spread out the earth, this one marked out the sea with sand. This child brings forth winds from his treasuries, this child in Noah’s time opened the floodgates of the deluge, this child works the threads of the rain, this child scatters snow like wool, this child freed our forefathers from the land of Egypt by the staff of Moses, this child parted the Red Sea and led them through as through a grassy plain and in the desert rained down manna and gave them a land flowing with milk and honey as an inheritance; this child prepared this temple to be raised on high through the fathers, this child made oaths to Abraham, saying: Multiplying I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore.

Concerning this child the prophetic choir, offering a supplication, said: Arouse your power, and come to save us. Do not, because he is a child, stumble at the child. The same is both child and co-eternal with the Father, the same is both numbered with time and without genealogy, the same is both a babbling child and the one who grants mouth and wisdom; for the one is due to the birth from a virgin, the other due to the incomprehensibility of his existence. Since Isaiah also presented this, saying: A child is born to us, a son is also given to us. The one was born, the other was given; the one because of what is seen, the other because of what is perceived. These are the prophecies of Anna, these are the excellent sayings of the woman, these are the achievements of the widow, of the widow indeed, of the one who nobly exchanged her life, of the one who sent her husband forth and received the Lord. She lived with her husband for seven years from her virginity, completing a week of years and in the seventh year ceasing her association with a man. Nobly she kept the Sabbath, nobly she attained the Lord’s day of grace. Anna followed the way of the turtledove; she did not forget her spouse, she did not set aside her first pledge, she did not bring an insolent man to her bed, she did not place the yoke of monogamy on another. She had in her bed the memory, as if the dead man were alive;
