9 And they did what was commanded them. And when he had spent thirty days in the prison, with the chains lying lightly upon him, Herod again sought for the holy Longinus, saying to his nobles: “Bring the prisoner Longinus before me on the tribunal, so that when I see him sullen and withered, I may be refreshed.” But the nobles, going into the prison and seeing his face shining, were afraid to bring him before the tribunal; however, having taken him because of what was commanded them by Herod, they led the good athlete of Christ to the tribunal. And Herod, having seen his face like the face of an angel, gnashed his teeth against his nobles and tore his garments and said: “Instead of tortures you have presented this prisoner to me.”

10 And Herod, being enraged against his nobles, exiled them, and he ordered the chamberlains to be beheaded, and he decimated the soldiers who stood by him; and against his army he gnashed his teeth and was enraged, as if thinking that some plot was being prepared against him. And to the holy Longinus he said: “Swear to me by the salvation of the gods to no longer speak or swear by the one who was born, nor to say he is a king, so that if you do this you may escape the torments and the punishments that await you.” But the holy Longinus said to the king: “By the glory of Jesus Christ who saves those who believe in him, you will not persuade me to deny my God; for hoping in him, I will not fear your torments.” And Herod ordered him to be tortured with scourges. And the saint was praising and saying: “Lord, God, eternal king of kings and lord of lords, who sets kings upon the ground and raises the poor from the earth, the only merciful one, send your angel to strengthen me.”

11 And Herod, seeing that the holy Longinus did not feel the torments, said to his nobles: “Take him away to the prison, bind him with chains and, having punished him, bring him to me, that I may deem you worthy of great honor.” And they, taking the holy Longinus, led him with great sorrow to the prison and did to him what was commanded them. And when he had spent three days in the guardhouse and great perplexity came upon Herod because of the king who was born, the holy Longinus prayed in the night, saying: “Lord, Jesus Christ, send forth your angel, and deliver your servants who are being punished here.” And as he prayed, a great earthquake occurred, so that the prison was shaken, and a light shone around the holy Longinus and a voice was heard saying to him: “Arise quickly; for now is not the time for you to complete your testimony.”

12 And immediately everyone's bonds fell off and the prison was opened and about a thousand men went out and fled from the city; and a great tumult arose in the city. And the king heard what had happened in the prison; and coming to the place and not finding the holy Longinus there, he was at a loss as to what had happened. But the holy Longinus was moving about in the city and no one was able to see him, because their eyes were darkened. And Herod was searching for him; and there was a great tumult and a loud noise in the city and they spoke against the pious. And Herod sent down missives to the nations, to bring the holy Longinus as a prisoner, thinking that the servant of God had fled from the city; for having been struck with blindness, he lay down and thus “Herod, having been eaten by worms, expired”.
