cannot do spiritual things, nor can spiritual men do carnal things, so that neither can faith do the things of unbelief, nor unbelief the things of faith. But you, being full of the Holy Spirit, do nothing carnal, but all things spiritual. You are perfected in Christ Jesus, who is the savior of all men, especially of believers. But I have learned of some who passed through among you, holding a bad teaching of a strange and evil spirit, to whom you did not give entry to sow their tares, stopping your ears so as not to receive the error proclaimed by them, being persuaded that the people-deceiving spirit speaks not the things of Christ, but its own things; for it is a liar. But the Holy Spirit speaks not its own things, but the things of Christ, and not from itself, but from the Lord, just as the Lord also announced to us the things from the Father. For 'the word,' He says, 'which you hear, is not Mine, but the Father's who sent Me.' And concerning the Holy Spirit: 'He will not speak,' He says, 'of Himself, but whatever He hears from Me.' And concerning Himself He says to the Father: 'I have glorified You,' He says, 'on the earth; the work which You have given Me, I have finished; I have manifested Your name to men.' And concerning the Holy Spirit: 'He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.' Therefore each glorifies Him from whom He also received what He will do; and He preaches Him and proclaims His words. But the deceiving spirit preaches itself, speaks its own things, for it is self-pleasing; it glorifies itself, for it is full of pride; it is a liar, deceitful, fawning, flattering, insidious, a rhapsodist, verbose, discordant, of measureless speech, greedy, cowardly, from whose working Jesus Christ will deliver us, who has founded us upon the rock, as chosen stones, well-fitted for the building of God the Father, being carried up to the heights through Christ who was crucified for us, using the Holy Spirit as a rope, being drawn up by faith and lifted by love from earth to heaven, journeying together with the blameless. For 'blessed,' He says, 'are the blameless in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord.' And the unerring way is Jesus Christ; for 'I,' He says, 'am the way and the life.' And the way leads to the Father; for 'no one,' He says, 'comes to the Father, except through Me.' Blessed therefore are you, the God-bearers, spirit-bearers, temple-bearers, bearers-of-what-is-holy, in all things adorned in the commandments of Jesus Christ, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession; on whose account I, exulting, was counted worthy through this letter to converse with the saints who are in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus. I rejoice therefore over you, that you pay no attention to vanity nor love according to the flesh, but according to God.
And for the other men, pray unceasingly; for there is in them a hope of repentance, that they may attain to God. For does not he who falls rise again, or he who turns away not turn back? Allow them, therefore, to be discipled by you. Become, therefore, ministers of God and the mouth of Christ; for the Lord says: 'If you bring forth the precious from the worthless, you shall be as My mouth.' Toward their anger, be you humble-minded; against their blasphemies, oppose you earnest prayers; while they are in error, stand you firm in the faith; conquer their savage temper with gentleness, their wrathfulness with meekness. For blessed are the meek, and Moses was meek above all men, and David was exceedingly meek; wherefore Paul exhorts, saying a servant of the Lord must not quarrel, but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those who oppose him. not being eager to defend yourselves against those who wrong you (for 'if I have rendered,' he says, 'to those who rendered evil to me'), let us make them brothers by our gentleness. For say to those who hate you: 'You are our brothers,' that the name of the Lord may be glorified. And let us imitate the Lord, who when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when crucified, did not resist; when suffering, did not threaten, but on behalf of those who
