when it is dissolved, when she has departed, her image is stored up in your soul, her words, her gestures, her glances, her gait, her rhythm, her discretion, her whorish members, and receiving countless wounds, you depart. Is it not from here that there is an overturning of households? Is it not from here that there is a loss of sobriety? Is it not from here that there are divisions of marriages? Is it not from here that there are wars and battles? Is it not from here that there are unpleasantnesses that have no reason? For whenever, having been filled with this, you go up, having become a captive, your wife seems more unpleasant, and your children more burdensome, and your servants oppressive, and your house superfluous, and the usual cares seem to be annoying for the management of necessary affairs, and each person who approaches is burdensome and oppressive.

But the cause is that you do not go up to your house alone, but having the prostitute with you, not ascending openly and clearly; which would have been easier; for your wife would have quickly driven her out; but one seated in your mind and your conscience, and lighting the Babylonian furnace within, or rather, one much more grievous; for not tow and naphtha and pitch, but the things I have mentioned become food for the fire, and everything is upside down. And just as those who have a fever, having nothing to complain of in those who serve them, because of the malignancy of the disease are displeased with everyone, refusing food, and reviling physicians, and being vexed with their own family, and raging against their attendants; so also those who are sick with this grievous disease are altered, are discontented, always looking at her. Oh, grievous affairs! A wolf and a lion, and the other beasts when shot with an arrow flee the hunter; but man, the most rational, when wounded, pursues the one who wounded him, so as to receive a much more grievous dart, and to take pleasure in the wound; which is indeed the most bitter of all things, and makes the disease incurable. For he who does not hate the wound, nor wish to be freed from it, how would he seek the physician? For these things I am in pain and am cut to the heart, that receiving such great harm, you come down from there, and for a small pleasure you endure continual pain. For even before Gehenna and punishment, you exact the ultimate penalty from yourselves here. Or is it not the ultimate punishment, tell me, to nourish such a desire, and to be continually inflamed, and to carry everywhere a furnace of unseemly love, and the accusation of conscience? For how will you set foot on those sacred thresholds? how will you touch the heavenly table? how will you hear the word concerning sobriety, being full of so many sores and wounds, 56.268 and having your mind enslaved to passion? And what need is there to say the other things? From the things now being done by us it is possible to see the pain of the mind. Now at least I see, during these words, men striking their foreheads, and I am very grateful to you, that you are a people so compassionate. But perhaps I think that many of those who have sinned in nothing are doing these things, grieving over the wounds of their brothers. For this reason I am in pain and am cut to the heart, that the devil is ravaging such a flock. But if you would be willing, we will quickly block his entrance. How and in what way? If we should see the sick becoming healthy; if, having spread the nets of teaching, we should go about seeking those caught by beasts, and snatch them from the very throat of the lion. For do not say to me: Few are they who have been led astray from the herd. Even if there are only ten, the loss is not ordinary; even if five, even if two, even if one. Since also that shepherd for this reason, having left the ninety-nine sheep, ran after the one, and did not return until he had brought it back again, and he filled up the number of the hundred, which was lacking through that one, by the restoration of the one that had strayed. Do not say that it is one; but consider that it is a soul, for which all visible things were made; for which there are laws, and punishments, and chastisements, and the countless wonders, and the various dispensations of God; for which he did not even spare the Only-Begotten. Consider how great a price was paid even for the one, and do not despise his salvation, but go and bring him back to us,

Οὐκ ἐντεῦθεν οἴκων ἀνατροπαί; οὐκ ἐντεῦθεν σωφροσύνης ἀπώλεια; οὐκ ἐντεῦθεν γάμων διαιρέσεις; οὐκ ἐντεῦθεν πόλεμοι καὶ μάχαι; οὐκ ἐντεῦθεν ἀηδίαι λόγον οὐκ ἔχουσαι; Ἐπειδὰν γὰρ ἐμπλησθεὶς ταύτης ἀνέλθῃς γενόμενος αἰχμάλωτος, καὶ ἡ γυνή σου ἀηδεστέρα φαίνεται, καὶ τὰ παιδία φορτικώτερα, καὶ οἱ οἰκέται ἐπαχθεῖς, καὶ ἡ οἰκία περιττὴ, καὶ αἱ συνήθεις φροντίδες ἐνοχλεῖν δοκοῦσι πρὸς τὴν οἰκονομίαν τῶν δεόντων πραγμάτων, καὶ ἕκαστος προσιὼν φορτικὸς καὶ ἐπαχθής.
γʹ. Τὸ δὲ αἴτιον, οὐκ ἀνέρχῃ μόνος εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν, ἀλλὰ τὴν πόρνην ἔχων μετὰ σεαυτοῦ, οὐ φανερῶς καὶ δήλως ἀνιοῦσαν· ὅπερ ἦν κουφότερον· ταχέως γὰρ ἂν ἐξήλασεν ἡ γυνή· ἀλλὰ τῇ γνώμῃ, καὶ τῷ συνειδότι ἐγκαθημένην, καὶ ἀνάπτουσαν ἔνδον τὴν Βαβυλωνίαν κάμινον, μᾶλλον δὲ πολλῷ χαλεπωτέραν· οὐ γὰρ στυππίον καὶ νάφθα καὶ πίσσα, ἀλλὰ τὰ εἰρημένα τροφὴ τῷ πυρὶ γίνεται, καὶ πάντα ἄνω καὶ κάτω. Καὶ καθάπερ οἱ πυρέττοντες, οὐδὲν ἔχοντες ἐγκαλεῖν τοῖς διακονουμένοις, διὰ τὴν τοῦ νοσήματος κακίαν δυσάρεστοι πρὸς πάντας εἰσὶ, σιτία διακρουόμενοι, καὶ ἰατροὺς κακίζοντες, καὶ πρὸς τοὺς οἰκείους ἀγανακτοῦντες, καὶ κατὰ τῶν διακονούντων λυττῶντες· οὕτω δὴ καὶ οἱ τὴν χαλεπὴν νόσον ταύτην νοσοῦντες, ἀλλοιοῦσι, δυσχεραίνουσι, πάντοτε ἐκείνην βλέποντες. Ὢ χαλεπῶν πραγμάτων. Λύκος μὲν καὶ λέων, καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ θηρία τοξευόμενα φεύγει τὸν κυνηγέτην· ἄνθρωπος δὲ ὁ λογιώτατος τρωθεὶς, περιδιώκει τὴν τρώσασαν, ὥστε πολλῷ χαλεπώτερον βέλος λαβεῖν, καὶ ἐνηδυπαθεῖν τῷ τραύματι· ὅπερ δὴ πάντων ἐστὶ πικρότατον, καὶ τὴν νόσον ἀνίατον ἐργάζεται. Ὁ γὰρ μὴ μισῶν τὸ ἕλκος, μηδὲ ἀπαλλαγῆναι βουλόμενος, πῶς ἂν ἐπιζητήσειε τὸν ἰατρόν; ∆ιὰ ταῦτα ὀδυνῶμαι καὶ διακόπτομαι, ὅτι τοσαύτην λύμην λαμβάνοντες, ἐκεῖθεν κατέρχεσθε, καὶ διὰ μικρὰν ἡδονὴν διηνεκῆ τὴν ὀδύνην ὑπομένετε. Καὶ γὰρ καὶ πρὸ τῆς γεέννης καὶ τῆς κολάσεως ἐνταῦθα τὴν ἐσχάτην ἑαυτοὺς ἀπαιτεῖτε δίκην. Ἢ οὐκ ἐσχάτης τιμωρίας, εἰπέ μοι, ἐπιθυμίαν τοιαύτην τρέφειν, καὶ διηνεκῶς ἐμπίπρασθαι, καὶ κάμινον ἔρωτος ἀτόπου πανταχοῦ περιφέρειν, καὶ συνειδότος κατηγορίαν; Πῶς γὰρ ἐπιβήσῃ τῶν προθύρων ἐκείνων τῶν ἱερῶν; πῶς ἅψῃ τῆς οὐρανίου τραπέζης; πῶς δὲ ἀκούσεις τὸν περὶ σωφροσύνης λόγον, ἑλκῶν γέμων καὶ τραυμά 56.268 των τοσούτων, καὶ τὴν διάνοιαν ἔχων τῷ πάθει δουλεύουσαν; Καὶ τί δεῖ τὰ ἄλλα λέγειν; Ἀπὸ τῶν νῦν παρ' ἡμῶν γινομένων ἔξεστι τῆς διανοίας ἰδεῖν τὴν ὀδύνην. Νῦν γοῦν ὁρῶ μεταξὺ τῶν λόγων τούτων τὰ μέτωπα τύπτοντας, καὶ πολλὴν ὑμῖν ἔχω χάριν, ὅτι δῆμος οὕτως ἐστὲ εὔσπλαγχνος. Τάχα δὲ οἶμαι πολλοὺς τῶν μηδὲν ἡμαρτηκότων ταῦτα ποιεῖν, ἀλγοῦντας ὑπὲρ τῶν ἀδελφικῶν τραυμάτων. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο ὀδυνῶμαι καὶ κόπτομαι, ὅτι τοιαύτην ἀγέλην ὁ διάβολος λυμαίνεται. Ἀλλ' εἰ βουληθείητε, ταχέως αὐτοῦ τὴν εἴσοδον ἀποφράξομεν. Πῶς καὶ τίνι τρόπῳ; Εἰ τοὺς νοσοῦντας ὑγιαίνοντας ἴδοιμεν· εἰ τὰ δίκτυα τῆς διδασκαλίας ἁπλώσαντες περιέλθοιμεν τοὺς θηριαλώτους ζητοῦντες, καὶ ἐξ αὐτῆς τοῦ λέοντος τῆς φάρυγγος αὐτοὺς ἐξαρπάσοιμεν. Μὴ γάρ μοι λέγε· Ὀλίγοι εἰσὶν οἱ ἀποβουκολισθέντες. Κἂν δέκα μόνον ὦσιν, οὐχ ἡ τυχοῦσα ζημία· κἂν πέντε, κἂν δύο, κἂν εἷς. Ἐπεὶ καὶ ὁ ποιμὴν ἐκεῖνος τὰ ἐνενήκοντα ἐννέα διὰ τοῦτο καταλιπὼν πρόβατα, ἐπὶ τὸ ἓν ἔτρεχε, καὶ οὐκ ἐπανῆλθεν ἕως πάλιν αὐτὸ ἐπανήγαγε, καὶ τὸν τῶν ἑκατὸν ἀριθμὸν χωλεύοντα δι' ἐκείνου τὴν ἀποκατάστασιν τοῦ πλανηθέντος ἐπλήρωσε. Μὴ λέγε, ὅτι εἷς ἐστιν· ἀλλ' ἐννόησον, ὅτι ψυχή ἐστι, δι' ἣν τὰ ὁρώμενα πάντα γέγονεν· δι' ἣν νόμοι, καὶ τιμωρίαι, καὶ κολάσεις, καὶ τὰ μυρία θαύματα, καὶ αἱ ποικίλαι τοῦ Θεοῦ πραγματεῖαι· δι' ἣν οὐδὲ τοῦ Μονογενοῦς ἐφείσατο.
