For this reason let us fast, beloved, so that we may obtain spiritual gifts. Fasting also schools the soul toward piety, taking as an image of bodily self-control the care of the soul, so that just as it abstains from foods that enter from without, so too it abstains from evil thoughts that rise up in the mind. For, it says, if the spirit of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your place, for healing will put a stop to sins. Just as you now abstain from foods by not tasting them, so abstain from sins by changing. Do you fast from wine by not partaking of it? fast also by abstaining from wickedness; for malice knows how to work a greater drunkenness in the soul. Do you fast from meats by not touching them? fast also by abstaining from slander, so that through it you do not eat the flesh of the brothers, tasting of their own flesh. For true fasting is abstinence from sins. Hear the Prophet saying: 'Is this not the fast that I have chosen, nor a day for a man to humble his soul?' But what? 'Loose,' he says, 'every bond of wickedness, undo the knots of oppressive contracts, break your bread for the hungry, bring the homeless into your house; if you see the naked, cover him.' This, beloved, is true fasting, which is acceptable to God, and saving for man, and pleasing to all. This is followed by the possession of the heavens, and the unerring promise of the Master. For see what it brings: 'Then your light shall break forth like the morning, and then when you cry, he will hear you; while you are still speaking, he will say: "Behold, I am here."' Do you see how great are the gifts of fasting, and how much piety it holds, so as even to persuade God himself to come to human nature? Fast, therefore, continue in prayers, in assemblies, in exhortations, not forsaking the congregation, as is the habit of some; nor in business or law-courts all day long; so that you do not gather money, which you ought to have been scattering; or petition against your brother, whom you should have been healing. You came in the evening, or at the ninth hour, not to fulfill the purpose of the fast, but to fill the appetite of the belly. And do not think that by abstaining from wine so as to be sober, but being filled with wickedness, you are not drunk, lest you hear, 'Woe to those who are drunk, but not with wine!' But drunkenness is not a companion of fasting, but an enemy and an adversary. So that we may attain to the hope of the resurrection prepared for us, there enjoying the good things laid up, and here exulting in the things expected in Christ Jesus, to whom be the glory for ever and ever. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο νηστεύσωμεν, ἀγαπητοὶ, ἵνα τῶν πνευματικῶν ἐπιτύχωμεν δωρημάτων. Νηστεύων παιδαγωγεῖ καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν πρὸς εὐσέβειαν, εἰκόνα λαμβάνων τῆς σωματικῆς ἐγκρατείας τὴν κατὰ ψυχὴν ἐπιμέλειαν, ἵνα ὥσπερ ἀπέχει τῶν ἔξωθεν ἐπεισερχομένων βρωμάτων, οὕτω καὶ τῶν ἐν τῇ διανοίᾳ ἐπαναβαινόντων πονηρῶν ἐννοημάτων. Ἐὰν γὰρ, φησὶ, Πνεῦμα τοῦ ἐξουσιάζοντος ἀναβῇ ἐπὶ σὲ, τόπον σου μὴ ἀφῇς, ὅτι ἴαμα καταπαύσει ἁμαρτίας. Ὥσπερ νῦν ἀπέχεις βρωμάτων μὴ γευσάμενος, οὕτως ἀπέχου ἁμαρτημάτων ἀλλασσόμενος. Νηστεύεις οἴνου μὴ ἀντιλαμβανόμενος; νήστευε καὶ πονηρίας ἀπεχόμενος· οἶδε γὰρ ἡ κακία μείζονα μέθην τῇ ψυχῇ κατεργάζεσθαι. Νηστεύεις κρεῶν μὴ ἁπτόμενος; νήστευε καὶ καταλαλιᾶς ἀπεχόμενος, ἵνα μὴ δι' αὐτῆς κρέα φάγῃς τῶν ἀδελφῶν, τῶν σαρκῶν αὑτοῦ ἀπογευόμενος. Νηστεία γὰρ ἀληθινὴ, ἀποχὴ τῶν ἁμαρτημάτων. Ἄκουε τοῦ Προφήτου λέγοντος· Οὐ ταύτην τὴν νηστείαν ἐξελεξάμην, οὐδὲ ἡμέραν ἄνθρωπον ταπεινοῦν τὴν ψυχὴν αὑτοῦ. Ἀλλὰ τί; Λύε, φησὶ, πάντα σύνδεσμον ἀδικίας, διάλυε στραγγαλιὰς βιαίων συναλλαγμάτων, διάθρυπτε πεινῶντι τὸν ἄρτον σου, ἄστεγον εἰσάγαγε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου· ἐὰν ἴδῃς γυμνὸν, περίβαλε. Αὕτη, ἀγαπητοὶ, ἀληθινὴ νηστεία, ἡ τῷ Θεῷ προσδεκτὴ, καὶ ἀνθρώπῳ σωτηριώδης, καὶ πᾶσιν ἀρεστή. Ταύτῃ ἐπακολουθεῖ ἡ τῶν οὐρανῶν κτῆσις, καὶ τοῦ ∆εσπότου ἀψευδὴς ἐπαγγελία. Ὅρα γὰρ τί ἐπιφέρει· Τότε ῥαγήσεται πρώϊμον τὸ φῶς σου, καὶ τότε βοῶντός σου, εἰσακούσεταί σου· ἔτι λαλοῦντός σου, ἐρεῖ· Ἰδοὺ πάρειμι. Βλέπεις ἡλίκα δῶρα τῆς νηστείας, καὶ πόσης ἔχεται τῆς εὐσεβείας, ὡς καὶ Θεὸν αὐτὸν δυσωπεῖν πρὸς ἀνθρωπίνην φύσιν παραγενέσθαι; Νήστευε τοίνυν, παράμενε ταῖς εὐχαῖς, ταῖς συνάξεσι, ταῖς νουθεσίαις, μὴ ἀπολιμπανόμενος τῆς συναγωγῆς, καθὼς ἔθος τισί· μηδὲ πραγματείαις ἢ δικαστηρίοις δι' ὅλης ἡμέρας· ἵνα μὴ χρήματα συνάξης, ἃ σκορπίζειν ὤφειλες· ἢ κατὰ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου ἐντυγχάνῃς, ὃν θεραπεύειν ἐχρῆν. Ἦλθες εἰς ἑσπέραν, ἢ τὴν ἐννάτην, οὐχ ἵνα νηστείας τελέσῃς τὴν πρόθεσιν, ἀλλ' ἵνα τῆς κοιλίας πληρώσῃς τὴν ὄρεξιν. Καὶ μὴ δόξῃς οἴνου μὲν ἀπεχόμενος διὰ τὸ νήφειν, πονηρίας δὲ πληρούμενος μεθύειν, ἵνα μὴ ἀκούσῃς, Οὐαὶ οἱ μεθύοντες, οὐκ ἀπὸ οἴνου! Μέθη δὲ οὐκ ἔστι νηστείας κοινωνὸς, ἀλλ' ἔχθρα καὶ ἀντίπαλος. Ἵνα φθάσωμεν εἰς τὴν ἡτοιμασμένην ἡμῖν ἐλπίδα τῆς ἀναστάσεως, ἐκεῖ μὲν ἀπολαύοντες τῶν ἀποκειμένων ἀγαθῶν, ἐνταῦθα δὲ ἀγαλλιώμενοι τοῖς προσδοκωμένοις ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ, ᾧ ἡ δόξα εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
