prophecy; however, he saw that the stone was cut from a mountain without hands. How was it cut? Not with iron, but without hands; for the Virgin gives birth spontaneously; and the stone struck the image, and it became a great mountain and filled the whole world. One stone fills the whole earth; That stone was cut without hands, and it became a great mountain, and filled the whole world.

2. What is this stone? Hear Isaiah saying: Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame. Not only does Isaiah speak of this stone, but David also prophesies: The stone that the builders rejected, this has become the head of the corner. This was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes. 50.798 What became the corner? Every corner joins two walls to itself; and the stone joined the New and the Old, two peoples from the Gentiles and from the Jews; therefore This was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes; not in the eyes of all, but in the eyes of us who believe. Therefore, when you see the Church occupied by both Jews and Greeks through the one stone, understand especially what is being said. But someone might certainly say: "And where among us are those from the Jews? For we see those from the Greeks, but where happen to be those from the Jews?" From where was Paul? From where was Peter? And from where was Andrew? And from where was John? And from where was the Church of ten thousand men in Jerusalem? First from the Jews, then from the Greeks

.For when those among them who had the hope of piety believed, then came the iron rod and scattered those who remained in unbelief. For you will shepherd them with a rod of iron; you will shatter them like a potter’s vessel. Why, Like a potter’s vessel? If the clay falls while still wet, it is taken up again; but if it becomes a vessel, and once comes into contact with fire, and becomes a very dry potsherd, when it is shattered, it no longer admits of being taken up again. You will shepherd them with a rod of iron; you will shatter them like potter’s vessels. However, in the iron kingdom Christ is born; a stone was cut without hands. See the consistent deeds, and the similar words; and it struck the image, and brought to an end the kingdoms on earth; and it became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. King Nebuchadnezzar had seen this dream; but the dream was forgotten, so that he might not relate it to the magi, and be deceived by them as usual, hearing one thing for another. Therefore, after a short time, Daniel himself sees the dream in another way; it was not a dream, but a revelation of a vision; it seemed to be by the sea; and Daniel says: Four great beasts came up from the sea. But let us follow quietly and little by little the type of the prophecy; There came up, he says, four great beasts from the sea, differing from one another, and, he says, there was very great difference among them. The first, like a lioness; and its wings like an eagle’s. You have there gold, here a lioness; why a lioness here and gold there? There gold because of the luxury and wealth; here a lioness because of the feminine and womanish, but nevertheless a beast. The first, like a lioness. A second beast he saw like a bear, and it stood on one side; there silver, here a bear, because of the heaviness. A third, he says, beast I saw like a leopard, a very swift beast. Since Alexander the king of the Macedonians very swiftly attacked the East, he was compared to a leopard. There bronze because of the euphony of the Greek language, here a leopard because of the swiftness of the attack. And the fourth he calls a beast, but he does not give a name, but says it was dreadful; exceedingly most dreadful; its teeth were great; devouring exceedingly, and crushing, and it trampled the rest with its feet; and it itself was exceedingly different from all the beasts that were before it; and the beast was dreadful; and he did not say its name. For since the [matter] of the
