The tyrant who wages war everywhere against the pious, who turns the sword of barbaric murders toward kindred blood, a tyrant persecuting the unseen Christ, a tyrant thinking to ravage the shepherd through the flock, a tyrant attempting to shoot arrows into heaven, a tyrant jealous of the expanding kingdom of Christ; a tyrant was the persecuting man, and a solitary pair; their fellow-contestants were daughters who did not go forth. Possessions were being plundered, the fatherland was being abandoned; impious soldiers were dragging the lovers of chastity and modesty, house-breakers forcing them to worship the image of the spiritual Nebuchadnezzar. But what the Babylonian furnace accomplished for the triad of martyrs, and having dissolved the bonds of both body and soul, it let their souls fly free to heaven. But the serpent who began, who pursued Eve in paradise, who deceived simple and guileless characters, this one, seeing the river become a pool of gore, and the stream being mingled with the divine Spirit, having pursued the blessed women as far as the river, was driven back by the waters mixed with spiritual fire, and turning his cleverness on itself, lamented the failure of his ancient device, and the women who were formerly easily deceived and easily frightened, these he saw behaving courageously and proudly against death, and the heel he watched to trip, this he saw leaping from earth to heaven.

But having sufficiently celebrated with the trophy-bearing women, and having mixed the useful everywhere into the theme, and having adorned an old tomb with a new tomb, and having stitched an unexpected revival to an enduring death, and having set forth examples for both men and women toward virtue and piety, and having shown a celebrated death and an enviable resurrection, let us give thanks to Christ who has power over life and death; to whom be the glory and the power, together with the Father and with the holy and life-giving Spirit, unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Ὁ πανταχοῦ τοῖς εὐσεβέσιν ἐπιστρατεύων τύραννος, ὁ τῶν βαρβαρικῶν φόνων πρὸς τὸ ἐμφύλιον αἷμα μεταστρέφων τὸ ξίφος, τύραννος Χριστὸν ἐλαύνων τὸν οὐ βλεπόμενον, τύραννος διὰ τῆς ποίμνης οἰόμενος τὸν ποιμένα πορθεῖν, τύραννος εἰς οὐρανὸν τοξεύειν ἐπιχειρῶν, τύραννος τὴν Χριστοῦ βασιλείαν πλατυνομένην ζηλοτυπῶν· τύραννος ἦν ὁ διώκων ἀνὴρ καὶ μονόζυξ, ἀπρόοδοι θυγατέρες αἱ συναγωνιζόμεναι. Χρήματα διηρπάζετο, πατρὶς ἀπελιμπάνετο· εἷλκον ἀσεβεῖς στρατιῶται τὰς τῆς σωφροσύνης τε καὶ κοσμιότητος ἐραστὰς, τοιχωρύχοι τὴν τοῦ νοητοῦ Ναβουχοδονόσορ εἰκόνα προσκυνεῖν ἀναγκάζοντες. Ἀλλ' ὅπερ ἡ Βαβυλωνία κάμινος ἐπὶ τῆς τῶν μαρτύρων τριάδος ἐργάζεται, καὶ σώματός τε καὶ ψυχῆς τὰ δεσμὰ διαλύσασα, ἐλευθέρας ἀφῆκεν εἰς οὐρανὸν πέτασθαι τὰς ψυχάς. Ὄφις δὲ ἀρχόμενος ὁ τὴν Εὔαν ἐν παραδείσῳ διώξας, ὁ τοῖς ἁπλοῖς καὶ ἀκάκοις σοφιστεύσας ἤθεσιν, οὗτος τὸν ποταμὸν ἰδὼν λύθρου κολυμβήθραν γενόμενον, καὶ θείῳ Πνεύματι τὸ ῥεῖθρον ἀνακιρνώμενον, ἄχρι τοῦ ποταμοῦ τὰς μακαρίας διώξας, τοῖς πυρὶ πνευματικῷ κερασθεῖσιν ὕδασιν ἀνεκρούετο, καὶ περιστρέφων ἑαυτῷ τὸ κομψὸν, τοῦ ἀρχαίου μηχανήματος τὴν ζημίαν ἐθρήνει, καὶ τὰς πρὶν εὐαπατήτους τε καὶ εὐπτοήτους γυναῖκας, ταύτας κατὰ τοῦ θανάτου σοβαρῶς νεανιευομένας ἑώρα, καὶ ἣν ἐτήρει πτερνίσαι πτέρναν, ταύτην ἀπὸ γῆς εἰς οὐρανὸν ἁλλομένην ἔβλεπεν.

Ἀλλ' ἱκανῶς καὶ ταῖς τροπαιοφόροις ἐμπανηγυρίσαντες γυναιξὶν, καὶ τὸ χρήσιμον πανταχοῦ τῇ ὑποθέσει κεράσαντες, καὶ τάφον παλαιὸν νεαρῷ τάφῳ κοσμήσαντες, καὶ παράλογον ἀναβίωσιν καρτερικῷ θανάτῳ συῤῥάψαντες, καὶ ἀνδράσι τε καὶ γυναιξὶν ὑποδείγματα πρὸς ἀρετήν τε καὶ εὐσέβειαν ὑποθέμενοι, καὶ θάνατον ἀοίδιμον καὶ ἀνάστασιν ζηλωτὴν ἐπιδείξαντες, εὐχαριστήσωμεν ζωῆς καὶ θανάτου ἐξουσίαν ἔχοντι Χριστῷ· ᾧ ἡ δόξα καὶ τὸ κράτος ἅμα τῷ Πατρὶ σὺν τῷ ἁγίῳ καὶ ζωο-ποιῷ Πνεύματι, εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
