Therefore the Lord, leading them to the interpretation of the legal rest, that it granted inactivity from works that tend to futility, not from those that lead to the benefit of the soul, proposed to the Pharisees: “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?”

But if you wish to keep the Sabbath and the festal rest well and according to Christ, abstain from worldly pursuits and transactions, but care for and do the things of God and the things for the benefit of the soul, and thus you will keep a truly holy Sabbath and celebrate a holy feast, an image of that which is with Christ, to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

διόπερ ὁ κύριος ἐπὶ τὴν ἑρμηνείαν ἄγων τῆς ἀνέσεως τῆς νομικῆς, ὅτι τῶν εἰς ματαιότητα συντεινόντων ἔργων ἐδίδου τὴν ἀργίαν, οὐ τῶν εἰς ψυχῆς ὠφέλειαν ἡκόντων, προὔτεινε τοῖς Φαρισαίοις· "Ἔξεστιν ἐν σαββάτῳ ἀγαθοποιῆσαι ἢ κακοποιῆσαι, ψυχὴν σῶσαι ἢ ἀπολέσαι;"
19 Εἰ δὲ καλῶς καὶ κατὰ Χριστὸν ἐθέλεις τηρεῖν τὸ σάββατον καὶ τὴν ἄνεσιν τὴν ἑορταστικήν, κοσμικῶν σπουδασμάτων καὶ διαπράξεων ἀφίστασο, φρόντιζε δὲ καὶ πράττε τὰ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τὰ εἰς ψυχῆς ὠφέλειαν, καὶ οὕτω σαββατίσεις σάββατον ἅγιον ἀληθῶς καὶ ἑορτάσεις ἁγίαν ἑορτήν, εἰκόνα τῆς παρὰ Χριστῷ, ᾧ ἡ δόξα εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
