But now I will relate the end of his life that befell him. 7. The Christ-loving emperor Constantine, then, having advanced into the thirty-first year of his reign, and having embarked upon the thirty-second, when he learned that the Persians were preparing for war against him, set out from his own city and was seen as far as Nicomedia of the Bithynians; where he also ended his life by the plotting of his own brothers, who poured a poisonous drug for him, a comet, as they say, having foretold his death. Constantine had these brothers on his father's side: Dalmatius, Hannibalianus, and Constantius; for he himself was the only son of his father Constantius by Helena, while he was still a private citizen; but from Theodora, the daughter of Maximian, surnamed Herculius, other children were born to him: both the aforementioned Dalmatius, and Hannibalianus, and Constantius, whom Constantine honored as Caesars and Nobilissimi. Of these, Constantius, from the wife joined to him, begets both Gallus and Julian, called the Apostate, because he renounced Christ and inclined toward the Hellenic religion; who, while he was reigning, punished the great martyr of Christ and much-suffering Artemius, on account of his faith in Christ and his divine zeal. But these things happened later and after some time. 8. But I, having related the things done in the earlier times, will turn my account again to the things that happened to the martyr; both how the lawless and apostate Julian and in what manner came to the dignity of the empire; and how the martyr of Christ Artemius ran to the all-holy stadium of the confession of Christ. When the great Constantine had just died, the rule of the Romans was divided into three rules, as his sons, Constantine, 96.1260 Constantius, and Constans, divided these among themselves. And to the first, Constantine, upper Gaul and the lands beyond the Alps, the British Isles, and as far as the western ocean were given as his portion; and to Constans, as the last, lower Gaul, that is, Italy and Rome itself. But Constantius, the second of Constantine's sons, who was at that time in charge of the affairs of the East, contending against the Persians, embraced the part of the East; and then Byzantium, renamed Constantinople, and New Rome, he makes his capital, and from Illyricum as far as the Propontis, whatever was subject to the Romans, both Syria and Palestine and Mesopotamia and Egypt, and all the islands, he makes subject to his own rule and state. 9. But the great Artemius was with Constantius at every time and in every matter, as a most excellent friend, and one of those distinguished for virtue and learning, and a fervent lover of the Christian faith. No one has handed down to us a written record of his country and family, except that the thrice-blessed one was of the well-born and great. From which these things also have been recorded about him, that he is the one who was commanded by Constantius to carry out the translation of the all-holy relics of the apostles of Christ, Andrew and Luke and Timothy, as the account will teach as it proceeds; and I will relate all these things in order, proceeding through the times and setting them forth according to the necessary accuracy of the matters. As has been said, then, since there were three emperors, and each of them was ruling his own portion, the first of them, Constantine, having set out from his own share and having gone against the inheritance of his youngest brother, when that one had gone away to Rome, attempted to perpetrate some injustice against his brother; and slandered him in his absence, as
