On the nativity of Christ (homily 12) (formerly under the name of John Chrysostom)

of the Lord's incarnate presence, they immediately committed murder, for this reason the Lord was pleased to make the prophecy through Gentile magi, so that the Jews might know from this that the blessing of Abraham was transferred to the Gentiles. Wherefore also the Lord, revealing this for many ages, blessing Abraham, said:I will surely multiply your seed as the stars of heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore. He calls the sons of Israel sand because of the barrenness of their soul and because of the saltiness of their knowledge, but the Gentiles stars because of the light of their knowledge. Wherefore also the blessed Paul, writing to the Gentiles, said: among whom you shine as lights in the world. The magi, therefore, having come into Jerusalem, were asking the Jews, saying:Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east and have come to worship him.Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? Either announce it, or hear it.A king who has been born, a heavenly gift, a rational star, an eastern grace, a universal message; the star is analogous to the one who was born. The herald is hidden in vain, who cannot be covered; for just as this sun cannot be hidden by anyone—for it shines everywhere each day—, so also the Lord Christ, the sun of righteousness, being God, will be believed in everywhere. To him be the glory for ever. Amen.
