On the transfiguration (homily 14) (formerly under the name of john chrysostom)

being, raised himself at some time. But if he is raised by another, show me that other one, so that leaving you I might become his disciple. Far be it from you, Lord, this shall never happen to you. Did you not exhort us, Master, saying: I am the light and the resurrection and the life? When does light change into darkness? When is resurrection covered by a tomb? When is life bound by cemeteries? Go away, Master, go away. Far be it from you, Lord, this shall never happen to you. What then of the Master Christ, the all-wise teacher? He no longer indulged the erring Peter, but is angered and troubled, saying to the devil who was causing him to stumble, as you just heard: Get behind me, Satan, you who have suborned my Peter to disbelieve. You are a stumbling block to me, Peter, because you do not think the things of God but the things of men. If I am not killed, none of you tastes of immortality. You are a stumbling block to me, Peter. If I am not murdered, none of you inherits the vineyard. You are a stumbling block to me, Peter, because you do not think the things of God but the things of men. I am a grain of wheat according to the word of the incarnation; Unless the grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it yields much fruit. You are a stumbling block to me, Peter, because you do not think the things of God but the things of men. If I do not descend into Hades, no one frees Adam from slavery. You are a stumbling block to me, Peter, because you do not think the things of God but the things of men. If I am not slain, none of you purchases the mystical meal. If I am not crucified, Peter, the thief does not open paradise. You are a stumbling block to me, Peter, because you do not think the things of God but the things of men. I came not only to visit the living, but also to benefit the dead. I did not lie, Peter, when I said: I am the light and the resurrection and the life. Since therefore I am light, Peter, I must shine for those in darkness. For what sort of light is it that does not put darkness to flight? I am resurrection, Peter, I must raise up those who have gone before. For what sort of resurrection is it that does not raise the dead? I am life, Peter, I must put death to death; for I suffer as a man, and I save as a lover of mankind. For now I suffer according to the economy, Peter; but after not long I will come as Master, not appearing in the form of a slave, but in the Father's glory, escorted by angels. Now, being rejected, I allow it because of the lowliness of my appearance; but after not long I will judge with authority because of the power of the Godhead. And that the Master Christ was pursuing these things, you just now heard him saying: The Son of Man is about to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and he will repay each according to his works. Let Arius be silenced even now, who does not fear the impartial judgment of the Lord. If the Master Christ, inasmuch as he is God the Word, is subordinate, and a dissimilar Son having nothing in common in substance with the one who begot him, as that man madly proclaims, how will he come in the glory of the Father? Behold, being of one substance he will come in the Father's glory; for of whom the substance differs, of them also the glory has differed; but of whom the substance is the same, of them also the glory is the same. But the children of the Arians will say immediately—for nothing is too bold for them; for having fallen into a mass of evils they are contemptuous—: This glory, he says, the only-begotten has received from the Father, having requested and prayed and supplicated. For we have heard him often praying and saying: Father, glorify me with the glory which I had with you before the world was. If therefore he has received the glory from the Father, how is he of one substance with the Father? These are the words of Arius. But O Arius, was the Master Christ praying these things inasmuch as he is God the Word or inasmuch as he is man? If he was praying inasmuch as he is God the Word, after the world, according to you
