that you reign, so that it might be shown how long-suffering I am. 429 rom9,22 God was not caught by the passion of wrath. God forbid. But since he did these things that we do when we are angry, he called the matter 'wrath' from what is familiar to us. rom9,28 The phrase 'bringing to completion' signifies that all accounts of knowledge and faith in God have an end, and there will not be another after this one now being preached—not as was the case with the Jewish things which passed away into the present ones, but the present word of faith has been given for the consummation of all faith and every word. For the Mosaic law was given as God was prefiguring and pre-delineating the law of grace, but he gives the evangelic law bringing it to completion and cutting it short, that is, finishing all things and bringing them to the best end. But he gave the phrase 'bringing a word to completion' as the reason for the aforementioned things. For since he said, 'I will call those who are not my people my people,' lest someone should say, 'And what of this?' for just as some from the people became 'not a people,' so if a people should come from 'not a people,' nothing prevents these too from becoming 'not a people' again. Not so, he says, 'bringing a word to completion'; for those things were passing away for the better, since all things had to be transformed, but now no longer, because the present calling and the spiritual legislation is perfected. Furthermore, since he said, 'Though the number of the sons of Israel be' and what follows, lest they say that often having heard many promises we either did not receive them at all, or after a short time, for they fell away from many of them because of their ungratefulness and lack of understanding. Not so now, he says, but if you wish, salvation is complete and swift at your hands. rom9,29 You can also understand this concerning Christ; so says Cyril among the saints. 430 rom11,9-10 What was going to happen by their own choice he states as in the form of a curse; for since, he says, they were not willing to see the sun of righteousness, may they not see. It indicates that they are going to come under the Romans, and the phrase 'always' signifies that they should never be set free. rom11,15 Or he says this: what will be their acceptance, if not that we should say that God who accepts them makes them alive who were dead in their sins. rom11,16 Or that he calls them holy, urging them to faith, as if he said: you are suitable and fitting, only the will is lacking in you. rom11,28-29 Then, since they have remained in unbelief and for this reason are not beloved, speaking securely he says, 'for the sake of the fathers,' as if he said, 'even if they themselves are not beloved because of their unbelief, yet for the sake of the fathers they are still loved, whence also they await salvation.' And he says 'calling' is what happened concerning the nation. rom12,1-2 Or, that you are not changed with the times. And how might someone offer himself as a living sacrifice? How are you not to be conformed, that is, do not fashion yourselves according to the form of this world? For it has nothing sound or lasting; for which reason he also calls it a 'form', indicating that which does not remain; and by saying this he indicates that it is transient. 431 rom14,5 The saying is not to be accepted concerning a dogma of faith, yet he himself says it. rom14,11-12 It has been said concerning God the Father that he himself will judge no one, but has given judgment to the Son. It is clear therefore that what was said by Paul, 'will confess to God' and 'will give an account to God,' was said concerning the judge. Therefore Christ is God, even if the impious do not wish it. rom14,15 By which he also advises the faithful to abstain from foods out of condescension for those of little faith, which he also says in passing. You teach well, but the conflict becomes a cause of blasphemy. rom14, God built by the cross, you therefore are destroying the building of God. rom15,8 It is possible to understand it this way too: Christ, he says, became a servant of the Jews, that is, he became a servant so that the Jews might be included in the promises, and so that the Father who promised these things might prove true. rom15,29 Or thus: I know that when I come, I will come to fill you with the blessing from the gospel, that is, I will anoint you for virtue and faith. 432 rom16,25-26 So that they may live, he says, as the gospel proclaims. To him who is able to establish you, to the only wise God—and establish you how? 'through Jesus Christ be glory,' he says, 'forever.'
