they rose up against me.” 5.14 And again he says: “Behold, I have given my back to scourges, and my cheeks to blows, and I have set my face as a solid rock.”
6.1a When, therefore, he fulfilled the commandment, what does he say? “Who is he that contends with me? Let him oppose me; or who is he that is justified against me? Let him draw near to the servant of the Lord. Woe to you, for you will all grow old like a garment and the moth will consume you.” 6.2a And again the prophet says, since as a strong stone he was set for crushing: “Behold, I will lay in the foundations of Zion a precious stone, chosen, a chief cornerstone, honorable.” Then what does he say? “And he who believes in him shall live forever.” 6.3a Is our hope, then, upon a stone? May it not be so! but because the Lord has set his flesh in strength. For he says: “And he set me as a solid rock.” 6.4a And again the prophet says: “The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the head of the corner.” And again he says: “This is the great and wonderful day, which the Lord has made.” 6.5 I write to you more simply, that you may understand; I am an offscouring of your love. 6.6a What then does the prophet say again? “A synagogue of evil-doers surrounded me, they encircled me like bees around a honeycomb, and for my clothing they cast lots.” Therefore, since he was about to be manifested in the flesh and to suffer, the passion was revealed beforehand. 6.7 For the prophet speaks against Israel: Woe to their soul, because they have devised an evil counsel against themselves, saying: “Let us bind the righteous one, for he is troublesome to us.” 6.8 What does the other prophet, Moses, say to them? “Behold, thus says the Lord God: Enter into the good land, which the Lord swore to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, and inherit it, a land flowing with milk and honey.” 6.9a But what does knowledge say? Learn. “Hope,” it says, “on Jesus who is about to be manifested to you in the flesh.” For man is suffering earth; for from the face of the earth the formation of Adam came to be. What then does he say? “Into the good land, a land flowing with milk and honey.” 6.10a Blessed is our Lord, brothers, who has placed in us wisdom and understanding of his secrets. For the prophet says: “Who will understand the parable of the Lord, except one who is wise and knowledgeable and loves his Lord?” 6.11 Since, therefore, having renewed us in the remission of sins, he has made us another type, to have a soul like a child, as if he were remolding us. 6.12a For the scripture says concerning us, as he says to the Son: “Let us make man according to our image and likeness, and let them rule over the beasts of the earth and the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea.” And the Lord said, seeing our good creation: “Increase and multiply and fill the earth.” These things were to the Son. 6.13a Again I will show you how he speaks to us; he made a second creation in the last days. And the Lord says: “Behold, I make the last things as the first.” For this, therefore, the prophet preached: “Enter into a land flowing with milk and honey and have dominion over it.” 6.14a See, therefore, we have been remolded, just as he says again in another prophet: “Behold, says the Lord, I will take out from these,” that is, those whom the spirit of the Lord foresaw, “their hearts of stone, and I will put in hearts of flesh”— because he himself was to be manifested in flesh and to dwell in us. 6.15 For our dwelling place of the heart is a holy temple to the Lord, my brothers. 6.16a For the Lord says again: “And in what shall I appear to the Lord my God and be glorified?” He says: “I will confess you in the church of my brothers, and I will sing to you in the midst of the church of the saints.” Therefore we are those whom he has brought into the good land. 6.17a What then is the “milk” and the “honey”? That first the child is nourished with honey, then with milk. So, therefore, we also, being nourished by the faith of the promise and by the word, shall live, having dominion over the earth. 6.18a And he said above: “And let them increase and multiply and rule over the fish.” Who, then, is able now to rule over beasts or fish or birds of the sky? For to perceive
