Some of the Greeks considered gods, who are not gods, but there is only one true God, since there is only the only-begotten from the only one, and only the Holy Spirit. For a Trinity in unity, and one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 3.1 But the Word winnows out those not deemed worthy of the Holy Spirit. "For no one can say, 'Jesus is Lord,' except by the Holy Spirit." 3.2 For the Jews also say the name Jesus, but they do not consider him Lord. And the Arians say the name and God *, but they say he is an adopted and not a true God, since they have not partaken of the Holy 3.3 Spirit. For if someone does not receive the Holy Spirit, he does not call Jesus truly Lord and truly God and truly Son of God and truly 3.4 eternal king. For let those who have held the evil opinion learn that in all things the only-begotten Son of God does not wish to bear witness about himself. 3.5 For thus he said in the gospel, "If I bear witness about myself, my testimony is nothing; it is another who bears witness about me." 3.6 And who is the other but the one who spoke from heaven, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased"? But the same one who says, "If I bear witness about myself, my testimony is nothing," again says, "Even if I bear witness about myself, my testimony is true," and again, "The very works that the Father has given me bear witness about me," and again, "Moses wrote about me," and "Moses bears witness about 3.7 me." First, "If I bear witness about myself, my testimony is nothing," since many glorify themselves and bear witness about themselves, in order to cut off the boasting of those who boast and of those who 3.8 commend themselves. But when he says, "Even if I bear witness about myself, my testimony is true," he shows that his testimony is not that of a man, but that he is God speaking truth in his testimony. Therefore, the Father is true God, the Son is true God, the Holy Spirit is true, being "the Spirit of God" and "the Spirit of truth," a Trinity numbered in 3.9 one name. For concerning the Father, the Son himself says, "that they may know you, the only true God." And a trustworthy witness concerning the Son is the one who reclined on his breast, declaring him to be the only-begotten God. But he did not add "true God" to "only-begotten God," but concerning the Father it is written that he is "true God," and concerning the Son, that he is "only-begotten God." And conversely concerning the Father, that "God is light"; but concerning the Son, that "he was the true light." 4.1 And observe for me the precision of the scriptures. For the Father is light, and "true light" is not added to what is said about the Father; but concerning the Son he said "true light," and no one dares to say otherwise. 4.2 For who, being mad or rather bringing madness upon himself, will dare to incur for himself the suspicion of blasphemy, by not finding "the true" added to the saying and stating concerning the Father that he is not 4.3 true light? For if the genuine Son begotten of him is true light, the begetter of the Son is undoubtedly true light, he himself who begot him without beginning and without time is true 4.4 light. And just as one must not dare to say of the Father that he is not true light, although "the true" is not added, but from ourselves, because we think piously, we know, even if it is not written, that he is true light, and we do not doubt, lest we perish, so also it is written of the Son that the Son is God, and even if "true God" is not added, we heap up madness for ourselves if we dare to blaspheme and not call the Son true God even if 4.5 the word is not added. For it is sufficient for the one to bear the whole bond of the Trinity and from the Father to understand the Son as true God and the Spirit as true, with the names of each being set in opposition to the
