If, therefore, you are carnal and consider the enjoyment of sensible things to be great, you have the description of that bodily paradise and the most pleasant abundance, and hasten toward these things, as you will find there an uninterrupted supply of delight. But if you are spiritual and think on things higher than carnal pleasures, ascend in thought to the beauties of the angels, learn the fruits of righteousness in them, behold as in a mirror the river of God that is filled with waters, of which The streams make glad the city of God, Of which God is the artisan and craftsman. Through that city flows this river that begins from Eden, which waters paradise. Having learned all these things with the mind, glorify their Creator who has made so many and so great goods for you and for your enjoyment and has deemed you worthy of such glory, if you always turn to Him and understand, from whom and for whom you were brought into being; because to Him belongs the glory unto the ages of ages. ἀρτιγενὴς ὢν καὶ πολλῆς δεόμενος 84a συγγυμνασίας πρὸς τὴν τελείωσιν. ἐν ᾧ τὸ σύστημα τῶν ἁγίων, ἐν ᾧ αἱ ἀνατολαὶ τοῦ φωτός, ἐν ᾧ ἡ τρυφὴ τῆς ψυχῆς, ἐκεῖ ἔθετο τὸν ἄνθρωπον ὁ θεός. ἂν μὲν οὖν σάρκινος ᾖς καὶ μεγάλην ἡγῇ τὴν τῶν αἰσθητῶν ἀπόλαυσιν, ἔχεις τὴν ὑπογραφὴν τοῦ σωματικοῦ ἐκείνου παραδείσου καὶ τὴν ἡδίστην ἐμφόρησιν, καὶ πρὸς ταῦτα ἐπείγου ὡς ἐκεῖ εὑρήσων χορηγίαν τρυφῆς ἀδιάλειπτον. εἰ δὲ πνευματικὸς εἶ καὶ ἀνώτερα φρονεῖς τῶν σαρκικῶν ἀπολαύσεων, ἀνάβα τῇ διανοίᾳ πρὸς τὰ κάλλη τῶν ἀγγέλων, κατάμαθε τοὺς ἐν αὐτοῖς τῆς δικαιοσύνης καρπούς, ἐνοπτρίσθητι τὸν ποταμὸν τοῦ θεοῦ τὸν πεπληρωμένον ὑδάτων, οὗ Τὰ ὁρμήματα εὐφραίνουσι τὴν πόλιν τοῦ θεοῦ, Ἧς τεχνίτης καὶ δημιουργὸς ὁ θεός. ἐκείνην τὴν πόλιν διαρρέει ὁ ποταμὸς οὗτος ὁ ἀρχόμενος ἐξ Ἐδέμ, ὁ ποτίζων τὸν παράδεισον. πάντα ταῦτα τῇ διανοίᾳ καταμαθὼν δόξαζε τὸν τούτων δημιουργὸν τὸν τὰ τοσαῦτα καὶ τηλικαῦτα ἀγαθὰ διὰ σὲ καὶ τὴν σὴν ἀπόλαυσιν πεποιηκότα καὶ τοιαύτης δόξης σε ἀξιώσαντα, εἰ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἀεὶ ἐπιστρέφεις καὶ συνίεις, παρ' οὗ καὶ ἐφ' ᾧ εἰς τὸ εἶναι παρήχθης· ὅτι αὐτῷ πρέπει ἡ δόξα εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. ἀμήν.
