And putting it on and with his hand showing the hill, in which he had ordered his blessed body to be placed, thus also bending his knee, rejoicing greatly, and composing himself with his companions with him who had completed the victorious contest, his head is cut off and they are enrolled in the choirs of both apostles and martyrs; for they showed the courage of these and the good zeal of those.

11 And the executioners, taking the head of Saint Longinus, bring it to Pilate; for it was for the sake of the Jews and on account of the money he had received that he had done this. And when the executioners brought the saint's head to Jerusalem, Pilate orders it to be shown to the Jews, who were thirsting for the death of Longinus, and selling the drama for much gold to those accustomed to buy the blood of the righteous with money. Then Pilate orders the head of Saint Longinus, precious to God and terrible to demons, and lovely to angels and marveled at by the elements, to be cast outside before the gate of the city. It lay, therefore, before the gate like some inviolable treasure; and since there was much dung there, the most precious pearl of Christ was preserved unharmed, and the dung was for a time a tomb for it, or rather an ark, with the philanthropic God being long-suffering and in this for the sake of a dispensation.

12 For a certain widow woman from the same country of the Cappadocians, the mother of an only-begotten child, having lost the eyes of her body, overcoming her suffering with faith, came to Jerusalem with her only-begotten child, expecting here to receive back her eyes by venerating the holy places. As, then, being led by the hand by her own child, she gathered the dust of the earth and considered plastering it on her own eyes, perhaps expecting to find in it the eye-salve of light in order to see again, but suddenly a sickness came upon her only-begotten son and snatched him from his mother's hands, then a double darkness of the eyes came upon her and she was extinguished by the most bitter suffering of the calamity. And crying out with pitiable voices to God, she said: "How long, O Lord, will you forget me to the end? and the rest. 'Am I alone,' she says, 'a sinner, that I am made to pay the penalties so very bitterly? Am I worse than the prostitute whom you received when she brought you myrrh? But you have deprived me of my light and taken my only-begotten; and for me there is no hope of salvation from anywhere.'

13 And as she was in great affliction and inconsolable grief, the blessed Longinus appears to her in a dream and related to her all the things concerning himself; 'I am,' he said, 'Longinus the centurion, the one who confessed on the cross our Lord Jesus Christ, that "truly this was the Son of God." Wherefore I also reveal to you how Pilate, having made false accusations against me, provoked Caesar and cut off my head and brings it here and casts it outside the city; for children of the Jews agreed to this also for a price. And much dung is piled up on it, so that this lot had to be preserved for you for healing; for as soon as you uncover it, you will receive back your eyes; then thus I will also present to you your child with glory, who will comfort your grief.'

14 And having been comforted by these words, the woman, and at the same time strengthened as courageous and faithful, hurried to the task, being led by the hand to the place where she learned from those guiding her, who were also faithful, that dung was piled up; and having already arrived at the aforementioned place, she begins to dig with her own hands; and by the providence of God, having quickly found the head precious to God, immediately she beheld the rays of the sun. And having embraced and washed it with all haste and anointed it with precious myrrh, she returns, carrying the pearl, to where she was staying.

Ἐνδυσάμενος δὲ αὐτὴν καὶ τῇ χειρὶ δείξας τὸν λόφον, ἐν ᾧ τὸ μακάριον αὐτοῦ σῶμα διετάξατο τεθῆναι, οὕτω τε τὸ γόνυ κάμψας χαίρων λίαν, καὶ σχηματίσας ἑαυτὸν μετὰ τῶν σὺν αὐτῷ ἑταίρων τῶν τὸν νικηφόρον ἀγῶνα διανυσάντων, τὴν κεφαλὴν ἐκτέμνεται καὶ χο ροῖς ἀποστόλων τε καὶ μαρτύρων ἐγγράφονται· τούτων γὰρ τὴν ἀνδρείαν καὶ ἐκείνων τὸν καλὸν ζῆλον ἐπεδείξαντο.

11 Λαβόντες δὲ οἱ δήμιοι τὴν κεφαλὴν τοῦ ἁγίου Λογγίνου ταύτην προσφέρουσιν τῷ Πιλάτῳ· καὶ γὰρ πρὸς χάριν τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ περὶ ὧν ἔλαβεν χρημάτων τοῦτο πεποίηκεν. Ὡς δὲ ἤνεγκαν οἱ δήμιοι εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ τὴν κεφαλὴν τοῦ ἁγίου, προστάσσει ὁ Πιλᾶτος ἐπιδειχθῆναι αὐτὴν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις, τοῖς διψῶσιν τὸν θάνατον Λογγίνου, καὶ πολλοῦ χρυσίου τὸ δρᾶμα πωλήσας τοῖς εἰωθόσι χρήμασιν ὠνεῖσθαι τὰ τῶν δικαίων αἵ ματα. Τότε ῥιφῆναι τὴν τιμίαν τῷ θεῷ καὶ φοβερὰν τοῖς δαί μοσι, τοῖς δὲ ἀγγέλοις ἐπέραστον καὶ στοιχείοις θαυμαζομένην κεφαλὴν τοῦ ἁγίου Λογγίνου προστάττει ὁ Πιλᾶτος ἔξω πρὸ τῆς πύλης τῆς πόλεως. Ἔκειτο τοίνυν πρὸ τῆς πύλης ὥσπερ τις θησαυρὸς ἄσυλος· κόπρου δὲ πλείστης οὔσης ἐκεῖσε, ἀβλαβὴς δι εφυλάχθη ὁ πολυτίμητος τοῦ Χριστοῦ μαργαρίτης, καὶ τάφος αὐ τῷ τέως μᾶλλον δὲ κιβωτὸς ἡ κόπρος ἦν, μακροθυμοῦντος τοῦ φιλανθρώπου θεοῦ καὶ ἐν τούτῳ οἰκονομίας χάριν.

12 Χήρα γάρ τις γυνὴ τῆς αὐτῆς τῶν Καππαδοκῶν χώρας, μονογενοῦς τέκνου μήτηρ, τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τοῦ σώματος ἀπο βαλοῦσα, πίστει τὸ πάθος νικήσασα, μετὰ τοῦ μονογενοῦς τέκ νου τὴν Ἰερουσαλὴμ κατέλαβεν, ἐνθάδε προσδοκῶσα τῇ προσκυ νήσει τῶν ἁγίων τόπων τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἀπολαβεῖν. Ὡς οὖν χειραγωγουμένη ὑπὸ τοῦ ἰδίου τέκνου συνῆγεν τὸν χοῦν τῆς γῆς καὶ τοῖς ἰδίοις ὀφθαλμοῖς ἐσκέπτετο καταπλάσα σθαι τοῦτον, ἴσως ἐν αὐτῷ εὑρίσκειν προσδοκῶσα τοῦ φωτὸς τὸ κολλύριον πρὸς τὸ ἀναβλέψαι, ἀθρόον δὲ νόσος ἐπῆλθεν τῷ μονογενεῖ αὐτῆς υἱῷ καὶ ἐκ τῶν μητρικῶν χειρῶν αὐτὸν ἀφήρ πασεν, τότε διπλοῦν αὐτῇ τὸ σκότος τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν ἐπῆλθεν καὶ ἀπεσβέννυτο τῷ δριμυτάτῳ πάθει τῆς συμφορᾶς. Ἡ δὲ οἰκ τρὰς φωνὰς βοῶσα πρὸς τὸν θεὸν ἔλεγεν· «Ἕως πότε, κύριε, ἐπιλήσῃ μου εἰς τέλος; καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς. Μὴ μόνη ἐγώ», φησίν, «ἁμαρτωλὸς τυγχάνω, ὅτι τὰς δίκας οὕτω δριμυτάτως εἰσπράτ τομαι; Μὴ χείρων εἰμὶ τῆς πόρνης ἣν προσεδέξω μύρον σοι προσκομίζουσαν; Ἐμὲ δὲ καὶ τὸ φῶς ἐστέρησας καὶ τὸν μονο γενῆ μου ἔλαβες· καὶ οὐκ ἔστι μοί ποθεν ἐλπὶς σωτηρίας».

13 Ὡς δὲ ἦν ἐν πολλῇ θλίψει καὶ ἀπαραμυθήτῳ πένθει, φαί νεται αὐτῇ καθ' ὕπνον ὁ μακάριος Λογγῖνος καὶ πάντα αὐτῇ τὰ καθ' ἑαυτὸν διηγήσατο· «Ἐγώ εἰμι», λέγων, «Λογγῖνος ὁ ἑκατόνταρχος, ὁ ὁμολογήσας ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ τὸν κύριον ἡ μῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ὅτι «ἀληθῶς θεοῦ υἱὸς ἦν οὗτος.» Ὅθεν ἀποκαλύπτω σοι καὶ ὅπως Πιλᾶτος κατ' ἐμοῦ ψευδῆ δη μηγορήσας ἐρεθίζει τὸν Καίσαρα καὶ ἀποτέμνει μου τὴν κεφα λὴν καὶ ἐνταῦθα κομίζει καὶ ῥίπτει ἔξω τῆς πόλεως· Ἰουδαί ων γὰρ παῖδες χρημάτων ὠνῇ καὶ τούτῳ συνεφώνησαν. Κό προς δὲ πλείστη ἐπ' αὐτῇ σεσώρευται, ὥστε σοι ἔδει φυλαχθῆ ναι τὸν κλῆρον τοῦτον πρὸς ἰατρείαν· ἅμα γὰρ αὐτὴν ἀνακαλύ ψεις, τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου ἀπολήψει· εἶθ' οὕτως παραστήσω δέ σοι καὶ τὸν παῖδα μετὰ δόξης, ὅστις σου τὸ πένθος παρακαλέ σει.»

14 Τούτοις δὲ τοῖς λόγοις παρακληθεῖσα ἡ γυνή, ὁμοῦ καὶ νευρωθεῖσα ὡς ἀνδρεία καὶ πιστή, πρὸς τὸ ἔργον ἠπείγετο, χειρ αγωγηθεῖσα πρὸς τὸν χῶρον ἐν ᾧ κόπρον σωρευθῆναι ἐμάνθανε παρὰ τῶν αὐτὴν ὁδηγούντων καὶ αὐτῶν πιστῶν ὄντων· ἤδη δὲ φθασάντων εἰς τὸν προκείμενον τόπον, ἄρχεται ὀρύγειν ταῖς ἰ δίαις χερσίν· προνοίᾳ δὲ θεοῦ τάχιον εὑροῦσα τὴν τιμίαν τῷ θεῷ κεφαλήν, παραχρῆμα τὰς ἡλιακὰς ἀκτῖνας ἐθεάσατο. Περι πτυξαμένη δὲ καὶ πλύνασα μετὰ πάσης σπουδῆς καὶ μύροις ἐν τίμοις ἐπαλείψασα, ἐπανέρχεται φέρουσα τὸν μαργαρίτην ἔνθα ἐξενίζετο.
