13 And Archelaus, the son of Herod, who had the name of his father, reigned in his place. And Saint Longinus was in the holy city, awaiting the salvation from God. And when Archelaus died, Herod, the brother of Philip, reigned over Judea and Galilee. And Longinus was received into his own rank; and he was witnessing the mighty works of God and the miracles performed every day by our Lord Jesus Christ, until the time when, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, emperor of the Romans, and of Herod the brother of Philip who, on account of Herodias, cut off the head of John the Baptist, who also himself died a most wretched death, giving up his spirit. And Herod, son of Herod, brother of Archelaus, reigned over Galilee in place of Herod the brother of Philip; and in the twenty-fifth year of his reign, on the eighth day before the Kalends of April, which is the twenty-fifth of March, in the consulate of Rufus and Rubellius, in the fourth year of the second Olympiad, when Josephus and Caiaphas were high priests of the Jews, who also handed over our Lord Jesus Christ to Pilate to be crucified.

14 But when Pilate learned that he was a Galilean and under the jurisdiction of Herod, he sent him to Herod, who was in Jerusalem. Who also, "after mocking him" and treating him with contempt, "put a gorgeous robe on him and sent him back to Pilate." And he, "having called together the chief priests and the rulers," judged before them that "you brought this man to me as one who is innocent." But they all handed him over to be crucified, who also crucified "the one who takes away the sin of the world," nailing him to the wood; for Pilate had handed him over to the soldiers, and he set over them the centurion Longinus, who was renamed Primianus in the army. And Saint Longinus was with the soldiers, guarding Christ who had gone up on the cross.

15 "Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land." And the centurion, standing by and guarding the cross around the ninth hour, beheld a great light around him, though there was darkness over all the land. And he also saw a multitude of angels standing by the cross and the whole earth shaking, and "the veil of the temple was torn," and he saw the face of the Lord like lightning. And before he gave up his spirit, Saint Longinus considered in his heart, saying, "Truly this is the Son of God and the redeemer of the whole world." And considering these things, he fell on his face at the feet of the Lord; and a trance came upon the soldiers and they were turned to sleep. But Saint Longinus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me; for I have believed that you are the Son of God, the savior of the world." And Jesus said to him, "Man, today you have been born and your memorial shall be spoken of until the last days."

16 And having heard these things, Saint Longinus said to Jesus, "Lord, I am going away from this city because of the threat of the chief men." And Jesus said to him, "Make the sign of the cross on your forehead, for with your blood I will baptize you, and go." And after making the cross, the centurion was guarding the precious cross with the soldiers; and standing by "about the ninth hour" when Jesus cried out "with a loud voice, Eloi, eloi," that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?", "he gave up his spirit." And behold, there was a great thunder, and the earth was shaken, and the sun was darkened from the sixth hour until the ninth hour, and the stars of heaven showed their light, and "the rocks were split and the tombs

13 Καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν ἀντ' αὐτοῦ Ἀρχέλαος ὁ υἱὸς Ἡρῴδου τὴν προσωνυμίαν ἔχων τοῦ πατρός. Ἦν δὲ ὁ ἅγιος Λογγῖνος ἐν τῇ ἁγίᾳ πόλει ἀπεκδεχόμενος τὴν σωτηρίαν τὴν παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ. Τελευτήσαντος δὲ τοῦ Ἀρχελάου, ἐβασίλευσεν Ἡρῴδης, ὁ ἀδελφὸς Φιλίππου, τῆς Ἰουδαίας καὶ Γαλιλαίας. Καὶ ἐδέχθη Λογγῖνος ἐπὶ τὴν ἰδίαν τάξιν· καὶ ἦν θεωρῶν τὰ μεγαλεῖα τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τὰ θαύματα τὰ γινόμενα κατὰ πᾶσαν ἡμέραν ὑπὸ τοῦ δεσπότου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἕως ὅτε ἐν ἔτει πεντεκαι δεκάτῳ τῆς βασιλείας Τιβερίου Καίσαρος βασιλέως Ῥωμαίων καὶ Ἡρῴδου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ Φιλίππου διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα ἀποτεμόντος τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἰωάννου τοῦ βαπτιστοῦ, ὃς καὶ αὐτὸς κακιγ κάκως ἀποδώσας τὸ πνεῦμα ἐξέψυξεν. Καὶ βασιλεύει Ἡρῴδης υἱὸς Ἡρῴδου, ἀδελφὸς Ἀρχελάου, ἀντὶ Ἡρῴδου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ Φιλίππου, τῆς Γαλιλαίας· ἐν ἔτει δὲ εἰκοστῷ πέμπτῳ τῆς ἀρχῆς αὐτοῦ, τῇ πρὸ ὀκτὼ καλανδῶν Ἀπριλίου, ἥτις ἐστὶν εἰκὰς πέμπτη Μαρτίου, ἐν ὑπατείᾳ Ῥούφου καὶ Ῥουβελλίωνος, ἐν τῷ τετάρτῳἔτει τῆς δευτέρας ὀλυμπιάδος, ἐπὶ ἀρχιερέως τῶν Ἰουδαίων Ἰωσίππου καὶ Καϊάφα, τῶν καὶ παραδεδωκότων τὸν κύριον ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν τῷ Πιλάτῳ εἰς τὸ σταυρωθῆναι.

14 Γνοὺς δὲ ὁ Πιλᾶτος ὅτι Γαλιλαῖός ἐστιν καὶ ὑπὸ τὴν ἐ ξουσίαν Ἡρῴδου, ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν πρὸς Ἡρῴδην, ὄντα ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις. Ὃς καὶ «ἐμπαίξας αὐτῷ» καὶ ἐξουθενήσας «περιέ βαλεν αὐτῷ ἐσθῆτα λαμπρὰ<ν> καὶ ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν τῷ Πιλάτῳ». Ὁ δὲ «συγκαλεσάμενος τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ἄρχον τας» διεκρίνετο πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὅτι «ἀνεύθυνον ὄντα τὸν ἄνθρωπον τοῦτον προσηγάγετέ μοι». Οἱ δὲ πάντες αὐτὸν παρέδωκαν εἰς τὸ σταυρωθῆναι, οἳ καὶ ἐσταύρωσαν «τὸν αἴροντα τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου», προσηλώσαντες αὐτὸν τῷ ξύλῳ· ἦν γὰρ ὁ Πι λᾶτος παραδεδωκὼς αὐτὸν τοῖς στρατιώταις, ἐπέστησεν δὲ αὐ τοῖς τὸν ἑκατόνταρχον Λογγῖνον, τὸν μετονομασθέντα ἐν τῇ στρατιᾷ Πριμιανόν. Ἦν δὲ ὁ ἅγιος Λογγῖνος μετὰ τῶν στρα τιωτῶν φυλάττων τὸν ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ ἀνελθόντα Χριστόν.

15 «Ἀπὸ δὲ ἕκτης ὥρας ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης σκότος ἐγένετο ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ.» Παριστάμενος δὲ ὁ ἑκατόνταρχος ὡς περὶ τὴν ἐνάτην ὥραν φυλάττων τὸν σταυρόν, ἐθεάσατο φῶς μέγα περὶ αὐτόν, σκότος δὲ ἦν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ. Εἶδεν δὲ καὶ ἀγγέλων πλῆθος παρισταμένων τῷ σταυρῷ καὶ σαλευομένην πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν, καὶ «τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη», καὶ εἶδεν τὸ πρόσωπον τοῦ κυρίου ὡς ἀστραπήν. Καὶ προτοῦ τὸ πνεῦμα ἀποδῷ, ἐνεθυμεῖτο ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ ὁ ἅγιος Λογγῖνος λέ γων ὅτι «ἀληθῶς οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ λυτρωτὴς παντὸς τοῦ κόσμου.» Καὶ ταῦτα ἐνθυμούμενος ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσ ωπον πρὸς τοὺς πόδας τοῦ κυρίου· ἔκστασις δὲ ἐπῆλθεν τοῖς στρατιώταις καὶ εἰς ὕπνον ἐτράπησαν. Ὁ δὲ ἅγιος Λογγῖνος ἔκραξεν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ, λέγων· «Κύριε, Ἰησοῦ Χριστέ, υἱὲ τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος, ἐλέησόν με· ἐπίστευσα γὰρ ὅτι σὺ εἶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ, ὁ σωτὴρ τοῦ κόσμου.» Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· «Ἄνθρωπε, σήμερον γεγέννησαι καὶ τὸ μνημόσυνόν σου λαλη θήσεται μέχρι τῶν ἐσχάτων ἡμερῶν.»

16 Καὶ ταῦτα ἀκούσας ὁ ἅγιος Λογγῖνος εἶπεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ· «Κύριε, πορεύομαι ἐκ τῆς πόλεως ταύτης διὰ τὴν ἀπειλὴν τῶν μεγιστάνων.» Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς· «Ἐν τῷ μετώπῳ σου ποίησον τὸν τύπον τοῦ σταυροῦ, ὅτι τῷ αἵματί σου σὲ βαπτίσω, καὶ πορεύου.» Μετὰ δὲ τὸ ποιῆσαι τὸν σταυρόν, ἦν ὁ ἑκατόν ταρχος φυλάττων μετὰ τῶν στρατιωτῶν τὸν τίμιον σταυρόν· παριστάμενος δὲ «περὶ τὴν ἐνάτην ὥραν» κράξαντος τοῦ Ἰησοῦ «φωνῇ μεγάλῃ· Ελωι, ελωι, τουτέστιν· θεέ μου, θεέ μου, ἵνα τί με ἐγκατέλιπας;», «ἀφῆκεν τὸ πνεῦμα». Καὶ ἰδοὺ βρον τὴ μεγάλη ἐγένετο, καὶ ἡ γῆ ἐσείσθη, καὶ ἐσκοτίσθη ὁ ἥλιος ἀπὸ ὥρας ἕκτης ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης, καὶ οἱ ἀστέρες τοῦ οὐρα νοῦ ἔφαναν τὸ φέγγος αὐτῶν, καὶ «αἱ πέτραι ἐσχίσθησαν καὶ τὰ μνημεῖα
