For we too sail a voyage, not from earth to earth, but from earth to heaven. Let us therefore make our reason a fit pilot for the upward course, and sailors obedient to it, and a solid ship, so that it may neither be sunk by circumstance and worldly despondency, nor be lifted up by the wind of arrogance, but be nimble and light. If we prepare the ship, the pilot, and the sailors in this way, we will sail with a fair wind, and we will draw to ourselves the Son of God, the true pilot; who will not allow our vessel to be sunk, but even if ten thousand winds should blow, He will rebuke both the winds and the sea, and in place of the tossing will work a great calm. 4. Having prepared yourselves thus, therefore, come to the church on the following day, if indeed it is very important to you to hear something useful and to store up what is said in your soul. Let no one be a path, no one a rock, no one filled with thorns. Let us make ourselves fallow ground; for so we too will cast the seeds with readiness, if we see the ground is clean; but if it is stony and rough, forgive us for not wanting to labor in vain; for if, leaving off the sowing, we begin to cut out the thorns, it would again be the utmost folly to cast seeds into unworked ground. He who enjoys this hearing must not partake of the demonic table. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? You stand hearing John, and through him learning the things of the Spirit, and after this you go away to listen to harlot women, speaking shameful things, acting out more shameful things, and effeminate men slapping and being slapped by one another, How will you be able to be well cleansed, while wallowing in so much filth? For why is it necessary to recount in detail all the indecency there? For everything there is laughter, 59.29 everything shame, everything reproach, and insults and jests; everything is dissolution, everything ruin. Behold, I foretell and command all of you: let none of those who enjoy this table, corrupt his own soul with those poisonous spectacles. Everything said and done there is a satanic procession. But you who have been initiated know what covenants you made with us; or rather, what covenants you made with Christ, when He Himself initiated you; what you said to Him, what you declared to Him concerning the satanic procession, how along with Satan and his angels, you then renounced this, and promised not even to glance that way? There is, therefore, no small fear, lest someone, having become unmindful of such promises, should render himself unworthy of these mysteries. Do you not see how in the royal courts, not those who have given offense, but those who have been honored are called to share that counsel, and are ranked among the royal friends? An ambassador has come to us from heaven, sent from God 59.30 Himself, to discuss certain necessary things; and then you, having left off listening to what He wants and what He negotiates with us, sit listening to mimes. And of how many thunderbolts, of how many lightning-strikes, are these things not worthy? For just as one must not partake of the table of demons, so also not of the hearing of demons, nor with a filthy garment come to the splendid table, which is full of so many good things, which God Himself has prepared. For so great is its power, as even to lift us up at once to heaven itself, if only we attend with a sober mind. For it is not possible for one who is constantly charmed by the divine words to remain in his present lowliness; but it is necessary for him to be winged straightway, and to fly up to that upper region, and to meet with the infinite treasures of good things; may it be granted to all of us to obtain them, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom to the Father be glory, together with the all-holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Τοσαύτη γὰρ αὐτῆς ἡ δύναμις, ὡς καὶ πρὸς τὸν οὐρανὸν αὐτὸν ἀθρόον ἡμᾶς ἐπᾶραι, μόνον ἐὰν σώφρονι διανοίᾳ προσέχωμεν.
