you have seen, supposing him to be a man, not God; but he himself says: "He who has seen me has seen the Father".
23 We must also consider what "You shall not leave any of it until the morning" means, and let Paul explain this to us, saying that we make a "remembrance" of the Lord's passion "until he comes"; for this is celebrated and saves those who celebrate it until this present night passes and it becomes morning and the living Christ shines upon us from heaven, saving us through his own life, who now saves us through his death; "For if while we were enemies," he says, "we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, having been reconciled, 24 we shall be saved by his life". If, then, we are now saved in the death of Christ, but then in life, the symbol of not leaving the flesh of the victim "until the morning" is fitting; for we too shall then be living and our present state of death will pass away, being saved now in no other way than if we should be put to death, but then having a life-giving salvation; "Do not set your minds on earthly things," he says, "for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory". 25 Therefore also if any of the flesh of the victim is left over, it is burned with fire, so that we may know that in the present age Christ died "to sin once for all," but "death no longer has dominion over him," but by the power of the Spirit, as if by fire, the signs of death have been taken away, since life has prevailed.
26 As for "A bone of him shall not be broken," the blessed John says it was also physically preserved, his legs not having been broken, but it also has a spiritual meaning, that the firm element in him remained unconquered, and because of this, corruption did not touch the body, which had the firmest and unbreakable foundation, because the body was constituted divinely and not carnally and, having had a divine birth, was not subject to human corruption. "His flesh," he says, "did not see corruption".
27 Having examined these things concerning the saving anointing and the sacred food, let us end the discourse, and now leaving what follows for another examination, asking from the Lord the request that David asked: "Uncover my eyes, and I shall understand the wonderful things from your law", so that the reading of the laws may not be contemptible to us as it is to the Jews who stop at the types, but that, divinely understanding the divine symbols, we may be revealed toward the most divine truth in Christ Jesus our Lord, through whom and with whom be glory to the Father with the Holy Spirit for ever. Amen.

23 Σκεπτέον δὲ καὶ τί τὸ "Οὐκ ἀπολείψετε ἀπ' αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ πρωΐ", καὶ τοῦτο ἡμῖν ὁ Παῦλος ἑρμηνευέτω λέγων "ἀνάμνησιν" ἡμᾶς τοῦ πάθους τοῦ κυρίου ποιεῖσθαι "ἕως ἂν ἔλθῃ"· αὕτη γὰρ ἕως τοσούτου τελεῖται καὶ σώζει τοὺς τελοῦντας, ἕως ἡ παροῦσα νὺξ παρέλθῃ καὶ πρωῒ γένηται καὶ ζῶν ἡμῖν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ Χριστὸς ἐπιλάμψῃ, διὰ τῆς ζωῆς ἑαυτοῦ σώζων ἡμᾶς ὁ νῦν διὰ τοῦ θανάτου σώζων· "Εἰ γὰρ ἐχθροὶ ὄντες" φησὶ "κατηλλάγημεν τῷ θεῷ διὰ τοῦ θανάτου τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ, πολλῷ μᾶλλον καταλλαγέντες 24 σωθησόμεθα ἐν τῇ ζωῇ αὐτοῦ". Εἰ δὴ νῦν μὲν ἐν τῷ θανάτῳ Χριστοῦ σωζόμεθα, τότε δὲ ἐν ζωῇ, οἰκεῖον τὸ σύμβολον τὸ μὴ καταλιμπάνεσθαι τῶν κρεῶν τοῦ θύματος "ἕως τὸ πρωΐ"· καὶ γὰρ ἡμεῖς τότε ζῶντες ἐσόμεθα καὶ ἡ παροῦσα νέκρωσις ἡμῶν πάρεισι, νῦν μὲν οὐκ ἄλλως σωζομένων εἰ μὴ νεκρωθείημεν, τότε δὲ ζωτικὴν ἐχόντων σωτηρίαν· "Μὴ τὰ ἐπίγειά" φησι "φρονεῖτε, ἀπεθάνετε γὰρ καὶ ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν κέκρυπται σὺν τῷ Χριστῷ ἐν τῷ θεῷ. Ὅταν ὁ Χριστὸς φανερωθῇ ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν, τότε καὶ ὑμεῖς σὺν αὐτῷ φανερωθήσεσθε ἐν δόξῃ". 25 ∆ιὸ καὶ εἴ τι τῶν κρεῶν τοῦ ἱερείου περισσεῦον πυρὶ κατακαίεται, ἵν' εἰδείημεν ὅτι κατὰ τὸν νῦν αἰῶνα Χριστὸς τέθνηκε "τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ ἐφάπαξ", "οὐκέτι" δὲ "θάνατος αὐτοῦ κυριεύει", ἀλλὰ ἀφῄρηται τῇ δυνάμει τοῦ πνεύματος ὡσπερεὶ πυρός, τὰ τοῦ θανάτου σημεῖα τῆς ζωῆς ἐπικρατησάσης.
26 Τὸ δὲ δὴ "Ὀστοῦν οὐ συντριβήσεται ἀπ' αὐτοῦ" φησι μὲν ὁ μακάριος Ἰωάννης καὶ σωματικῶς πεφυλάχθαι, μὴ κατεαγέντων αὐτοῦ τῶν σκελῶν, ἔχει δὲ καὶ τὴν πνευματικὴν δήλωσιν, ὅτι τὸ στερρὸν τὸ ἐν αὐτῷ διέμενεν ἀήττητον, καὶ διὰ τοῦτο φθορὰ τοῦ σώματος οὐχ ἥψατο, στερροτάτην καὶ ἀσύντριπτον σχόντος τὴν ὑποβάθραν, διὰ τὸ θείως καὶ μὴ σαρκικῶς συστῆναι τὸ σῶμα καὶ θεῖαν ἐσχηκὸς τὴν γέννησιν μὴ ὑποκεῖσθαι τῇ τῶν ἀνθρώπων φθορᾷ. "Ἡ σὰρξ αὐτοῦ" φησι "οὐκ εἶδε διαφθοράν".
27 Ταῦτα περὶ τῆς σωτηρίου χρίσεως καὶ τῆς ἱερᾶς βρώσεως ἐξητακότες παυσώμεθα τοῦ λόγου, καὶ νῦν εἰς ἑτέραν ἐξέτασιν τὰ μετὰ τοῦτο καταλιπόντες, αἰτούμενοι παρὰ τοῦ κυρίου τὴν αἴτησιν, ἣν ∆αυὶδ ᾐτήσατο· "Ἀποκάλυψον τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς μου, καὶ κατανοήσω τὰ θαυμάσια ἐκ τοῦ νόμου σου", ἵν' ἡμῖν μὴ εὐκαταφρόνητος ἡ τῶν νομίμων ἀνάγνωσις ᾖ καθάπερ Ἰουδαίοις ἕως τῶν τύπων ἱσταμένοις, ἀλλὰ θείως τὰ θεῖα νοοῦντες σύμβολα πρὸς τὴν θειοτάτην ἀλήθειαν φανῶμεν ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τῷ κυρίῳ ἡμῶν, δι' οὗ καὶ μεθ' οὗ τῷ πατρὶ ἡ δόξα σὺν ἁγίῳ πνεύματι εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας.
