being asked for payment, one you slapped, another you condemned to a pit of mire, another you stoned. Behold, I myself, the son and heir, am present. Revere my sonship, be ashamed before the dignity of my paternal nature. I am in the Father, and the Father is in me, and I have come to you. I have mercy on my vineyard; though I have descended to earth, yet I dwell in the bosom of my Father. Give me the fruit of my vineyard. But truly, as wicked husbandmen, you will fulfill the work of your fathers. They were prophet-slayers, you will become God-slayers as well. For you abound in wickedness. I am the heir, the cornerstone, which even if you reject, you will be crushed, but I will join the two peoples, the things separated, the earthly with the heavenly. Through me, there will become one Church of angels and men. Through me, being enemies to my Father, you will be reconciled. For I will make peace, and I will make a libation of peace, my own blood, which will be shed for the salvation of the world. 5. Hinting at these things through parables, he did not persuade them. For they have closed their eyes, so that they might not see, and they have heard heavily with their ears. Therefore the light of the Gospel did not shine for them. Oh 96.585 the strange hardening of the unholy priests! They condemned themselves, not knowing what they were saying. For they passed sentence against themselves. For when asked what he will do to those husbandmen, they answered truly against their will. He will miserably destroy those wicked men. It is truly just for the wicked one to suffer from his own choice. And he will give the vineyard to other husbandmen, who will give the fruit in its season. As priests and having the dignity of the priesthood, and not knowing the truth, they prophesy. For the vineyard, the people of the Lord, has been given to the husbandmen who have given to the Master abundant and fruitful harvest. For their sound went forth into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, of those who preach the gospel of good things! These, going as sheep in the midst of wolves, transformed the wolves into sheep, making those who once persecuted, the Greeks, into sheep of Christ, and acquired for the Lord a people for his own possession, zealous for good works. 6. Come then, brethren, as many as have received the name of faith, who have been deemed worthy to be called the people of Christ, let us not set aside our calling, let us not defile our faith by wicked works. It is not enough to be called faithful only, but let us show our faith by works. For there were two sons, he says, of one father, and he said to the one: Go, work in the vineyard. But he promised, but did not fulfill the promise. Then he says to the other. But he refused in word, but in deed he carried out what was commanded. And the first is blamed, but the second is praised. And so let us remember the renunciation, and the covenant made in baptism. We renounced the devil, and his angels, and all his worship; let us keep the renunciation; let us not, as a dog, return to its own vomit. The works of the devil are adulteries, fornications, impurities, envies, strife, contentions, hypocrisies, slanders, ironies, angers, grudges, condemnations, blasphemies, incantations, evil speakings. The signs of unbelief: lack of compassion, passions, antipathies, love of pleasure, stinginess, carousals, drunkennesses. And the devil's procession: prides, vainglories, conceit, arrogance, pomposity, ostentation, adornment of the body. Having renounced fellowship with all these, as we covenanted with Christ, let us be zealous for the virtues opposite to these: purity, self-control, poverty, patience, peace, love, sympathy, mercy, sharing with those in need, modest demeanor, and dress, and gait, true speech, humility, upon all things reproach
