as a ram, and Abraham standing by and holding the naked sword, not hesitating to slay his son.”
10.τ Of Melito of Sardis ex opere incerto 10.1 “For the sake of Isaac the righteous a ram appeared for slaughter, so that from his bonds Isaac
might be loosed. That one, being slaughtered, ransomed Isaac; so also the Lord, being slaughtered, saved us, and being bound, He loosed, and being sacrificed, He ransomed.”
11.τ ex opere incerto 11.1 “For the Lord was the lamb like the “ram, which Abraham saw caught in
a sabek plant”; but the plant signified the cross, and that place Jerusalem, and the lamb the Lord “entangled” for slaughter.”
12.τ ex opere incerto 12.1 “The phrase “caught by the horns” the Syrian and the Hebrew says is ‘hanging’
as more clearly typifying the cross, but “ram” also makes this precise; for he did not say a lamb, young, like Isaac, but “a ram,” like the Lord, perfect. And just as he called the holy cross a “sabek plant,” that is, of remission, so also Ezekiel in the end called that which prefigures holy baptism the “water of remission.” For two things were established that provide remission of sins: suffering for Christ’s sake and baptism.”

11.τ εχ οπερε ινξερτο 11.1 «Ἦν γὰρ ὁ κύριος ὁ ἀμνὸς ὡς ὁ «κριός, ὃν εἶδεν Ἀβραὰμ κατεχόμενον ἐν
φυτῷ σαβέκ»· ἀλλὰ τὸ φυτὸν ἀπέφαινε τὸν σταυρόν, καὶ ὁ τόπος ἐκεῖνος τὴν Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ ὁ ἀμνὸς τὸν κύριον «ἐμπεποδισμένον» εἰς σφαγήν.»
12.τ εχ οπερε ινξερτο 12.1 «Τὸ «κατεχόμενος τῶν κεράτων» ὁ Σύρος καὶ ὁ Ἑβραῖος κρεμάμενός
φησιν ὡς σαφέστερον τυποῦν τὸν σταυρόν, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὸ «κριὸς» τοῦτο ἀκριβοῖ· οὐ γὰρ εἶπεν ἀμνός, νέος, ὡς ὁ Ἰσαάκ, ἀλλὰ «κριός», ὡς ὁ κύριος, τέλειος. Ὥσπερ δὲ «φυτὸν σαβέκ», τοῦτ' ἔστιν ἀφέσεως, ἐκάλεσε τὸν ἅγιον σταυρόν, οὕτω καὶ Ἰεζεκιὴλ ἐν τῷ τέλει «ὕδωρ ἀφέσεως» ἐκάλεσε τὸ ἐκτυποῦν τὸ ἅγιον βάπτισμα. ∆ύο γὰρ συνέστη τὰ ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτημάτων παρεχόμενα, πάθος διὰ Χριστὸν καὶ βάπτισμα.»
