And according to the saying he parted the sea, and led them through; for all things happened, even if they are symbols, being taken as gospel parables of the ways to which one was led up. But another will say, that "I will open my mouth in parables" does not refer to the things from Exodus; but to the parables of Christ in the Gospel, speaking through the prophet: "Attend, my people, to my law," and what follows it. Wisdom is hymned in the public places. When kept silent by a wise man, it is not hymned; but having found an outlet, it is hymned. For it will be when you call upon me. For we call upon wisdom, which is Christ, as Lord. Therefore he who calls upon Christ, if he understands who he is, calls upon wisdom, understanding, sanctification, righteousness, and every virtue; even if not with lips, but with deeds. But let us not become such that we call upon him, but he does not hearken. {1CHAP. 2.}1 If, having received the word of my commandment, you hide it within yourself. And one hides it, not doing this for vainglory, but striving to be hidden. Then you will understand the fear of the Lord. But see after how many things we will understand the fear of the Lord; for it too is obscure, as is clear from the simpler ones; for it is possible to see some people fearing the Lord in things they ought not, and not fearing him in things they ought. And give your voice to understanding. And each one gives his own voice to something, perhaps speaking its utterance to anger, or to grief, or to fornication. But the blessed man dedicates his whole voice to the Lord, so that whatever he might speak, may be wisdom. And as another seeks silver, so you seek wisdom, becoming, as it were, a lover of money in this. Let not evil counsel overtake you. Those who are strangers to the Church promise one thing at the beginning, and other things at the end; for from the beginning they turn men away from idolatry, and bring them to the Creator; then changing their ground, they reject the Old Scripture, 13.29 opposing the elemental newness. But among the ecclesiastical teachers the ends are in harmony with the beginning elements. {1CHAP. 3.}1 But let your heart keep my words. After the prescriptive and prohibitive aspects of the law of God, the words of the wisdom of God announce the true knowledge of things that are. Such is also the saying, "Out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem." For he who keeps the laws will receive wisdom. For, it says, "Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap for a season of life." Then next is added to the practical: "Enlighten for yourselves a light of knowledge." Provide for good things in the sight of the Lord and of men. If you do what is done in wisdom, you will be a son of God, as it is said: "In wisdom you have made all things." Honor the Lord from your just labors. The divine Scripture usually takes the name of honor in the sense of giving; for it says, "Honor widows, those who are truly widows," instead of, "Give a share," so as not to humiliate the widow, by not saying almsgiving. And the Savior also says: "It is written in the law: 'Honor your father and your mother';" and the rest. And he said "from just labors," so that it might not be from robbery and greed. And let no one hesitate to give; for he will have no defense after the one in the

Ἀλλὰ μὴ τοιοῦτοι γενώμεθα, ὡς ἐπικαλεῖσθαι ἡμᾶς, αὐτὸν δὲ μὴ ὑπακούειν. {1ΚΕΦ. Βʹ.}1 Ἐὰν, δεξάμενος ῥῆσιν ἐμῆς ἐντολῆς, κρύψῃς παρὰ σεαυτῷ. Οἱ ἀλλότριοι τῆς Ἐκκλησίας ἄλλα μὲν ἐπαγγέλλονται κατ' ἀρχὰς, ἄλλα δὲ κατὰ τέλη· ἀφιστᾶσι μὲν γὰρ εἰδωλολατρείας ἐξ ἀρχῆς, καὶ προσάγουσι τῷ ∆ημιουργῷ· εἶτα με τατιθέμενοι, τὴν Παλαιὰν ἀθετοῦσι Γραφὴν ἐναν 13.29 τιούμενοι τῇ στοιχειώδει νεότητι. Τοιοῦτόν ἐστι καὶ τὸ, Ἐκ Σιὼν ἐξελεύσεται ὁ νόμος, καὶ λόγος Κυρίου ἐξ Ἱερουσαλήμ. Ὁ γὰρ τηρῶν τοὺς νόμους ἀναλήψεται τὴν σοφίαν. Σπείρατε γὰρ, φησὶν, ἑαυτοῖς δικαιοσύνην· τρυγήσατε εἰς καιρὸν ζωῆς. Εἶθ' ἑξῆς τῷ πρακτικῷ ἐπιφέρεται· Φωτίσατε ἑαυ τοῖς φῶς γνώσεως. Προνοοῦ καλὰ ἐνώπιον Κυρίου καὶ ἀνθρώπων. Ἐὰν ἐν σοφίᾳ ποιῇς τὸ πραττόμενον, υἱὸς ἔσῃ Θεοῦ, ὡς εἴρηται· Πάντα ἐν σοφίᾳ ἐποίησας. Τίμα τὸν Κύριον ἀπὸ σῶν δικαίων πόνων. Τὸ τῆς τιμῆς ὄνομα συνήθως ἐπὶ δόσεως ἡ θεία λαμβά νει Γραφή· Χήρας γὰρ, φησὶ, τίμα, τὰς ὄντως χήρας, ἀντὶ τοῦ, Μεταδίδου, ἵνα μὴ ταπεινώσῃ τὴν χήραν, ἐλεημοσύνην μὴ εἰπών. Καὶ ὁ Σωτὴρ δέ φησι· Γέγραπται ἐν τῷ νόμῳ· Τίμα τὸν πατέρα σου καὶ τὴν μητέρα σου· καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς. Ἀπὸ δι καίων δὲ πόνων εἶπεν, ἵνα μὴ ἐξ ἁρπαγῆς εἴη καὶ πλεονεξίας.
