And whom, if not the chief priests and elders, and all their nation, which indeed professes in word to worship God, but in deeds acts contrary to the profession? Therefore, those from the Gentiles who have turned from their former wickedness, and have brought forth fruits worthy of the kingdom, will obtain it; but you, who claim to be children of God, will be shut out of the kingdom; because you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed. Therefore they also justified God; for he appeared just in all that he did, rejecting you as disobedient and ungrateful, but choosing them as obedient and grateful. And you can no longer accuse him, as the prophet says: That you might be justified in your words. To go into the abyss. Because the divine words call what is named Tartarus an abyss. For there stood on a high stone, by the gates of her house, a bronze figure of a woman, kneeling on one knee, and with her hands outstretched before her, like one supplicating; and opposite this, another upright figure of a man of the same material, decently clothed in a double cloak, and extending his hand to the woman; at whose feet, on the stele, grew a strange kind of herb, which, rising to the fringe of the bronze double cloak, is an antidote for all sorts of diseases. They said that this statue bore the likeness of Jesus, which Maximinus made an incidental part of his 24.544 impiety. And so much for that. But let us proceed to the next part of the account. And having called together his twelve disciples, he gave them power and authority, etc. For these reasons the Lord armed his disciples with divine powers, so that first they might cast down the demonic hordes and the hostile and warlike arrays of men; then they might heal those who were afflicted with diseases and all kinds of sufferings; providing indeed for all men to see the tokens of the kingdom that was proclaimed. For it was necessary that those who announced a paradoxical proclamation should provide clear signs of strange and new good things to their disciples. And so the wondrous powers, the miracles, and the saving healings of souls and bodies were truly signs of the kingdom of God; because every word, devoid of deeds, can never produce a firm conviction in the hearers. Therefore, by the actions accomplished through deeds, they provided clear proof for the proclamation. For if they had proclaimed the kingdom of God to all with bare little words and voices uttered at random, and the abolition of the ancestral gods, who would have paid them any mind? And whom would they have persuaded that Jesus is God, if they brought no proof for their testimony? Therefore the Savior, prefacing every word with divine acts, first appointed his disciples, who were simple in manner and inexperienced in words and mortal wisdom, for the right ordering of the whole world; and then, having declared that he would make them fishers of human souls, he himself became the fulfiller of the promise; whence he made them workers of paradoxical wonders, giving them these as saving hooks for souls, so that through them they might net and draw up the mortal race from the abyss of wickedness, casting out evil spirits, and healing every disease and infirmity by his command; for the Spirit had not yet been given. Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag. Therefore, according to Matthew, he forbade them the possession of gold and silver and bronze, with foreknowledge of the future; for he foresaw that those who would be healed by them of their diseases and freed from their incurable sufferings, would be willing to give them even all of their possessions

δὲ τίνας, ἢ τοὺς ἀρχιερέας καὶ πρεσβυτέρους, καὶ πᾶν αὐτῶν τὸ ἔθνος, τὸ δὴ λόγῳ μὴν ἐπαγγελλόμενον θεοσεβεῖν, ἔργοις δὲ ἀντιπράττον τῇ ἐπαγγελίᾳ; ∆ιὸ οἱ μὲν ἐξ ἐθνῶν μεταβαλόντες τῆς προτέρας μοχθηρίας, καὶ καρποὺς ἐνδεξάμενοι τῆς βασιλείας ἀξίους, τεύξονται αὐτῆς· ὑμεῖς δὲ, οἱ φάσκοντες ἑαυτοὺς Θεοῦ εἶναι τέκνα, τῆς βασιλείας ἐκκλεισθήσεσθε· ὅτι ὑμεῖς μὲν οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ, οἱ δὲ τελῶναι καὶ αἱ πόρναι ἐπίστευσαν. ∆ιὸ καὶ ἐδικαίωσαν τὸν Θεόν· δίκαιος γὰρ ἐφάνη ἐπὶ πᾶσιν οἷς ἐποίησεν, ὑμᾶς μὲν ὡς ἀπειθεῖς καὶ ἀγνώμονας ἀπωσάμενος, ἐκείνους δὲ ὡς εὐπειθεῖς καὶ εὐγνώμονας ἐκλεξάμενος. Καὶ οὐκ ἔχετε λοιπὸν αὐτῷ ἐγκαλεῖν, ὃ προφήτης φησίν· Ὅπως ἂν δικαιωθῇς ἐν τοῖς λόγοις σου. Εἰς τὴν ἄβυσσον ἀπελθεῖν. Ὅτι τὸν λεγόμενον τάρταρον ἄβυσσον θεῖοι λόγοι καλοῦσι. Καὶ γυνὴ οὖσα ἐν ῥύσει αἵματος ἀπὸ ἐτῶν δώδεκα, κ. τ. λ. Ἐγὼ δὲ οὐκ ἄξιον ἡγοῦμαι παρελθεῖν διήγησιν καὶ τοῖς μεθ' ἡμᾶς μνημονεύεσθαι ἀξίαν. Τὴν γὰρ αἱμοῤῥοοῦσαν ἐκ Πανεάδος ἔλεγον ὁρμᾶσθαι, τόν τε οἶκον αὐτῆς ἐπὶ τῆς πόλεως δείκνυσθαι, καὶ τῆς ὑπὸ τοῦ Σωτῆρος εἰς αὐτὴν εὐεργεσίας θαυμαστὰ τρόπαια παραμένειν. Ἑστάναι γὰρ ἐφ' ὑψηλοῦ λίθου πρὸς μὲν ταῖς πύλαις τοῦ αὐτῆς οἴκου γυναικὸς ἐκτύπωμα χάλκεον, ἐπὶ γόνυ κεκλιμένον, καὶ τεταμέναις ἐπὶ τὸ πρόσθεν ταῖς χερσὶν, ἱκετευούσῃ ἐοικός· τούτου δὲ ἀντικρὺ ἄλλο τῆς αὐτῆς ὕλης ἀνδρὸς ὄρθιον σχῆμα, διπλοΐδα κοσμίως περιβεβλημένον, καὶ τὴν χεῖρα τῇ γυναικὶ προτεῖνον· οὗ παρὰ τοῖς ποσὶν ἐπὶ τῇ στήλῃ ξένον τι βοτάνης εἶδος φυὲν, ὃ, μέχρι τοῦ κρασπέδου τῆς τοῦ χαλκοῦ διπλοΐδος ἀνιὸν, ἀλεξιφάρμακόν τι παντοίων νοσημάτων τυγχάνει. Τοῦτον τὸν ἀνδριάντα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ εἰκόνα φέρειν ἔλεγον, ὃν Μαξιμῖνος τῆς 24.544 ἑαυτοῦ δυσσεβείας πάρεργον· ἐποιήσατο. Καὶ ταῦτα μὲν ταύτῃ. Ἐπὶ δὲ τὸ ἑξῆς τοῦ λόγου προΐωμεν. Συγκαλεσάμενος δὲ τοὺς δώδεκα μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ, ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς δύναμιν καὶ ἐξουσίαν, κ. τ. λ. ∆ιὰ ταῦτα ἐνθέοις δυνάμεσι τοὺς ἑαυτοῦ μαθητὰς ὁ Κύριος ὥπλιζεν, ὡς ἂν ἐν πρώτοις τὰ δαιμονικὰ στίφη καὶ τὰς ἐχθρὰς τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ πολεμικὰς παρατάξεις καθαιροῖεν· ἔπειτα νόσων καὶ παντοίων παθῶν θεραπεύοιεν τοὺς καταπονουμένους· γνωρίσματα δὴ τῆς κηρυττομένης βασιλείας παρέχων ὁρᾷν ἅπασιν ἀνθρώποις. Ἐχρῆν γὰρ, παράδοξον κήρυγμα καταγγέλλοντας, ξένων καὶ νέων ἀγαθῶν ἐναργῆ σημεῖα παρέχειν τοῖς μαθητευομένοις. Ἦσαν δ' οὖν ἀληθῶς Θεοῦ βασιλείας δείγματα αἱ τεράστιαι δυνάμεις, τά τε θαύματα καὶ σωτήριοι ψυχῶν καὶ σωμάτων θεραπεῖαι· ὅτι ἅπας λόγος, ἔργων ἔρημος, οὔποτ' ἂν ἰσχύσῃ πεῖσμα βέβαιον ἐμποιῆσαι τοῖς ἀκροωμένοις. ∆ιὸ ταῖς δι' ἔργων ἐπιτελουμέναις πράξεσι πίστιν ἐναργῆ παρεῖχον τῷ κηρύγματι. Εἰ γοῦν ψιλοῖς ῥηματίοις καὶ φωναῖς εἰκῆ προφερομέναις Θεοῦ βασιλείαν εἰς πάντας ἐβόων, κατάλυσίν τε τῶν πατριῶν θεῶν, τίς ἂν αὐτοῖς παρέσχε τὸν νοῦν; τίνα δ' ἂν ἔπεισαν Θεὸν εἶναι τὸν Ἰησοῦν καταγγέλλοντες, μηδεμίαν δὲ πίστιν τῇ μαρτυρίᾳ προσάγοντες; ∆ιὸ πάντα λόγον θεϊκαῖς προλαμβάνων πράξεσιν ὁ Σωτὴρ, πρῶτα μὲν ἀνεπιτηδεύτους τὸν τρόπον, λόγων τε καὶ σοφίας θνητῆς ἀπείρους τοὺς αὐτοῦ μαθητὰς ἐπὶ κατορθώσει τῆς ὅλης οἰκουμένης προεχειρίζετο· κἄπειτα ἁλιευτὰς ψυχῶν ἀνθρωπίνων ποιήσειν προφήσας αὐτοὺς, ποιητὴς αὐτὸς ἐγίνετο τῆς ἐπαγγελίας· ὅθεν παραδόξων θαυμάτων ἐργάτας αὐτοὺς ἀπειργάζετο, ἄγκιστρα ταῦτα ψυχῶν σωτήρια παραδιδοὺς αὐτοῖς, ὡς ἂν δι' αὐτῶν σαγηνεύοιεν καὶ ἀνέλκοιεν ἐκ τοῦ τῆς κακίας βυθοῦ τὸ θνητὸν γένος, πνεύματα πονηρὰ φυγαδεύοντες, καὶ πᾶσαν νόσον καὶ μαλακίαν ἰώμενοι ἐπὶ τῆς ἐπιταγῆς τῆς αὐτοῦ· οὔπω γὰρ ἦν Πνεῦμα δεδομένον. Μηδὲν αἴρετε εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν, μήτε ῥάβδους, μήτε πήραν. Κατὰ μὲν οὖν τὸν Ματθαῖον χρυσοῦ καὶ ἀργύρου καὶ χαλκοῦ τὴν κτῆσιν αὐτοῖς ἀπηγόρευε, προγνώσει τοῦ μέλλοντος· συνεώρα γὰρ, ὡς ἄρα οἱ τὰς νόσους ὑπ' αὐτῶν θεραπευθησόμενοι καὶ τῶν ἀνιάτων ἀπαλλαγησόμενοι παθῶν, ἐθελήσουσι καὶ πάντων αὐτοῖς τῶν ὑπαρχόντων
