{A.} Thus when the emperor Michael had passed away, his son Andronicus, at once holding the power, having been crowned emperor, was compelled to take hold of affairs alone, and all the more because the Tocharikon, having arrived, was ready according to the prior agreements to set out wherever it might be ordered by the emperor. For they were not to return empty, being bloodthirsty and looking only to gain, but from where and with whom, they did not care to know, so that there was a danger, if they did not get spoils from a foreign land, that they would rush upon the Romans and carry off and plunder them, lying ready for pillage, according to their own custom and law, caring nothing for anyone.
