11. Yet a little while, and the world passes away, and the tent is taken down. Let us make good use of the time; with things that do not stand, let us purchase things that do endure. Each of us is under penalties; and the dust bears many debts. Let us forgive, that we may be forgiven; let us release, that we may ask for release. You see in the Gospel; A debtor of many talents is brought in, and is released from his debt; for he is brought before a good master. And while he is forgiven, he does not forgive; for he is a slave also in his choice; but the philanthropy he received in the greater matter, this he does not share with his fellow servant in the lesser, not even, if for no other reason, following the example of magnanimity concerning what belonged to another; and the master is angered. And I will be silent about what follows; except that it is altogether better, 35.980 to offer from here kindness in advance of the accounting there.

12. What do you say? Do we have you with these words, of which you have often confessed yourself to be a lover, O most excellent of rulers, and may I add, most gentle? Or must I also bring forward to you this gray hair in place of a supplication, and the number of my years, and this long and stainless priesthood, which perhaps even angels respect, purely ministering to the Most Pure, as worthy of their own ministry. Do these things persuade? or shall I dare something greater? But my grief makes me bold. I bring before you Christ, and the emptying of Christ on our behalf, and the sufferings of the Impassible One. and the cross, and the nails, by which I was loosed from sin; and the blood, and the burial, and the resurrection, and the ascension, or even this table, which we approach in common; and the types of my salvation, which I celebrate from the same mouth from which I make this plea to you, the holy mystagogy that bears us upward.

13. If not for one of these things, then at least for them all, grant the favor both to us and to yourself, and to the Church in your house, and to this goodly fullness of Christ; which you should consider as interceding along with us, even if it yields the right of intercession to us, as to those more venerable through Him who has honoured us, and is at the same time restrained by the law of its office. In this one thing be nobly defeated; conquer us with philanthropy. Behold, I bring my suppliants before you, in the sight of God, and of angels, and of the kingdom of heaven, and of the recompense from there. Honor my faith, which I was entrusted with and have believed; so that yours also may be honored in greater and more perfect things. The sum 35.981 of the matter is, you yourself also have a Lord in heaven; may you find in your own case such a judge as you yourself may be to those under your rule. And may we all obtain both good things from here, and more tolerable things from there, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom is the glory and the power, to whom is honor and the kingdom, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, as it was, and was before, and shall be, both now, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

ΙΑʹ.
