they may become of the potter's clay and thus they might have a reminder of the potter and receive it for their need. "And you will be hated by all for my name's sake"; it is sufficient for your glory, enough for your honor, not a small thing for your confidence, that you are hated by all; but He who is over all does not endure to betray you, but persists in loving and cherishes love more warmly; "For you will be hated by all for my name's sake; but he who endures to the end, he will be saved."

11 Hear the word, O faithful one, and keep the commandment, and cultivate patience with diligence, and reap the ear of grain from it with much gladness. Harvest the grape, tread the cluster in the winepress. Do not say much: "The terrible things are various, the grievous things are difficult, the constraining things are downcast; one rejoices in things from one's homeland, but things in a foreign land are found gloomy; those who comfort are few, but those who trip one up are many; philosophy is reviled and virtue is mocked; fear for my household possesses me, a struggle over my relatives has befallen me, the care for my own things besieges me." Do not say these things, do not consider them, nor loosen the sinews of patience, nor cultivate within yourself the handfuls of faint-heartedness, but gaze intently with diligence upon this royal cross, look upon it and after this contemplate this sacred bridal chamber, the Resurrection. Picture for yourself the king hanging on a tree, the master unjustly struck by his slaves, the lawgiver shamelessly spat upon by those subject to the law, He who is rich in all apparel, shamelessly stripped of His clothing. But behold, in what do you see the resurrection? Here the linens of the one stripped bare show his wealth, angels will present the power of the one who was struck, the voices of those who descended from heaven announce the glory of the one who was buffeted; to Him be glory now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

τοῦ κεραμικοῦ γένωνται οὕτω τε τοῦ κεραμέως ἀνάμνησιν καὶ πρὸς ἀνάγκην λάβωσι. «Καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου»· ἱκανὸν ὑμῖν εἰς δόξαν, αὔταρκες εἰς ἀξίωμα, οὐ μικρὸν εἰς πεποίθησιν, ὅτι παρὰ πάντων μισεῖσθε· ὁ ἐπὶ πάντων δὲ ὑμᾶς προδοῦναι οὐκ ἀνέχεται, ἀλλ' ἐπιμένει στέργων καὶ θάλπει τὴν ἀγάπην θερμότερον· «Ἔσεσθε γὰρ μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου· ὁ δὲ ὑπομένων εἰς τέλος, οὗτος σωθήσεται.»

11 Ἄκουε τὸν λόγον, ὦ πιστέ, καὶ τὴν ἐντολὴν φύλαττε καὶ τὴν ὑπομονὴν ἀπὸ σπουδῆς γεώργησον καὶ τὸν ἐξ αὐτῆς ἄσταχυν μετὰ πολλῆς τῆς εὐφροσύνης θέρισον. Τρύγησον τὴν σταφυλήν, τὸν βότρυν ληνοβάτησον. Μὴ λέγε πολλά· «Τὰ δεινὰ ποικίλα, τὰ λυπηρὰ χαλεπά, τὰ συνέχοντα κατηφῆ· τὰ ἐκ πατρίδος ἀγάλλεται, στυγνὰ δὲ τὰ ἐπὶ ξένης εὑρίσκεται· οἱ παρακαλοῦντες ὀλίγοι, πολλοὶ δὲ οἱ σκελίζοντες· ἡ φιλοσοφία λοιδορεῖται καὶ ἡ ἀρετὴ σκώπτεται· φόβος με περὶ τῶν οἰκείων ἔχει, ἀγών μοι τῶν συγγενῶν ἐνέπεσεν, πολιορκεῖ με τῶν ἰδίων ἡ μέριμνα.» Μὴ λέγε ταῦτα, μὴ λογίζου, μηδὲ τὰ νεῦρα τῆς ὑπομονῆς ἔκλυε, μηδὲ τῆς ὀλιγωρίας γεώργει παρὰ σαυτῷ τὰ δράγματα, ἀλλ' εἰς τοῦτον τὸν σταυρὸν τὸν βασιλικὸν ἀπὸ σπουδῆς ἀπόβλεπε, εἰς αὐτὸν θεώρει καὶ κατασκόπει μετὰ τοῦτον τὴν ἱερὰν ταύτην παστάδα, τὴν Ἀνάστασιν. Ζωγράφει παρὰ σαυτὸν τὸν βασιλέα ἐπὶ ξύλου κρεμάμενον, δεσπότην παρὰ τῶν δούλων ἀδίκως ῥαπιζόμενον, νομοθέτην παρὰ τῶν ὑπευθύνων ἀναιδῶς ἐμπτυόμενον, τὸν πᾶσαν περιβολὴν πλουτοῦντα τῆς στολῆς ἀναισχύντως γυμνούμενον. Ἀλλ' ἰδοὺ θεωρεῖς ἐν τίσι τὴν ἀνάστασιν; Ἐνταῦθα τοῦ γυμνωθέντος αἱ ὀθόναι τὸν πλοῦτον δεικνύουσι, τοῦ ῥαπισθέντος τὴν δύναμιν παραστήσουσιν ἄγγελοι, τοῦ κολαφισθέντος τὴν δόξαν αἱ φωναὶ τῶν ἐξ οὐρανῶν καταβάντων μηνύουσι· αὐτῷ ἡ δόξα νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
