waves; immediately then the love of money withers away, and he who endured every toil, in order to gather his money, with his own hands makes a jettison of all he has, and gives his wealth as a gift to the sea. But ask him immediately, What are you doing, O man? Why are you mad? Why do you cast away your money uselessly? The sea does not guard your deposits; it is not like the earth, which receives seeds and gives them back to you many times over; for it does not receive seeds and give sheaves. Why then do you lend uselessly to an ungrateful element? Why do you trust faithless waves? Why do you give your treasure as a deposit to the sea that does not give it back? You were not willing to lend to God, and you cast your money to the wild sea? What then does he immediately answer? I wish to save my soul, rather than to gain the whole world. Now you have known, what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Now you have learned the saying of Christ, where He urged, saying, What will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? But did the law not teach you? Fear will at least teach you. Did the teaching of God not teach you? Let the madness of the sea teach you. O inconsistent deed! O necessity, that teaches all things! The sea by compulsion takes all, but God, urging you to the kingdom of heaven, does not receive even some part? You trust the sea, which promises you nothing good, and you do not obey God, who promises and grants you a hundredfold? Do you want me to suggest to you another image of such necessity? For it is necessary both through fearful things 60.752 and through good things for your soul to be helped from all sides. Consider then also those who do business on the land, who do and perform all things for the sake of gaining something, who dare to swear, and are full of all perjury for the sake of receiving one obol more, that such men set aside the laws of God. Prophets preach, and they close their ears; teachers cry out, and they mock the admonition. And what finally happens to these men? For not to all, but to these. For often such a merchant falls among robbers; and he who was gaping for wealth, and had insatiably clothed himself in the passion of avarice, immediately strips off such a disease, and becomes lavish in giving. For he sees the sword, which the robber brings against him, and the passion flees; the robber comes on, and he is then found, like some generous man, offering his own things with supplication. What then does he say to the robber at that time? Take all, and only grant me my soul. Let this man also hear: Now you have known what a man will give in exchange for his soul. To a robber wanting to take everything you give with all entreaty, to him who harms you in all things; but to God who wants to receive some part you do not lend, to Him who provides all good things to you richly, both earthly and heavenly; but do you not even fear God as much as the robber? And you fear a drawn sword, but you despise the threatened fire of Gehenna. May none of you, I beseech, become such persons; for you are not, especially being lovers of Christ; for you know all the things that will happen to men. Secure your souls before the departure from hence, and acknowledge Him who said in the holy Gospels: Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. To Him therefore, the God who has mercy and nourishes and does not reproach, let us send up glory, with the Father and the all-holy and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. κύματα· εὐθέως τότε ἡ φιλαργυρία μαραίνεται, καὶ ὁ πάντα κάματον ὑπομείνας, ἵνα συνάξῃ τὰ χρήματα, ἐκβολὰς ποιεῖται ταῖς ἰδίαις χερσὶ πάντων ὧν ἔχει, καὶ χαρίζεται τὸν πλοῦτον τῇ θαλάσσῃ. Ἀλλ' ἐρώτησον αὐτὸν εὐθέως, Τί ποιεῖς, ὦ ἄνθρωπε; τί μαίνῃ; τί ῥίπτεις τὰ χρήματα ἀχρήστως; οὐ παραφυλάττει σου τὰς παρακαταθήκας ἡ θάλασσα· οὐκ ἔστιν ὡς ἡ γῆ δεξαμένη τὰ σπέρματα, καὶ δίδωσί σοι πολυπλασίονα· οὐ γὰρ λαμβάνει σπέρματα, καὶ δίδωσι δράγματα. Τί οὖν δανείζεις ἀχρήστως ἀχαρίστῳ στοιχείῳ; τί πιστεύεις ἀπίστοις κύμασι; τί δίδως τὴν ἐνθήκην σου εἰς παρακαταθήκην τῇ μὴ ἀποδιδούσῃ θαλάσσῃ; Θεῷ οὐκ ἠθέλησας δανεῖσαι, καὶ τῇ ἀγρίᾳ θαλάσσῃ ῥίπτεις τὰ χρήματα; Τί οὖν εὐθέως ἐκεῖνος ἀποκρίνεται; Θέλω τὴν ψυχήν μου σῶσαι, ἢ ὅλον τὸν κόσμον κερδῆσαι. Νῦν ἔγνως, Τί δώσει ἄνθρωπος ἀντάλλαγμα τῆς ψυχῆς αὑτοῦ; νῦν ἔμαθες τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὅπου παρακαλῶν ἔλεγε, Τί ὠφελήσει ἄνθρωπον, ἐὰν ὅλον τὸν κόσμον κερδήσῃ, τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ζημιωθῇ; Ἀλλ' οὐκ ἐπαίδευσέ σε ὁ νόμος; Παιδεύσει σε κἂν ὁ φόβος. Οὐκ ἐπαίδευσέ σε ἡ τοῦ Θεοῦ διδασκαλία; Παιδευσάτω σε τῆς θαλάσσης ἡ μανία. Ὢ τῆς ἀνακολούθου πράξεως· ὢ τῆς πάντα παιδευούσης ἀνάγκης· ἡ θάλασσα βιαζομένη λαμβάνει ὅλα, ὁ Θεὸς δὲ προτρεπόμενος εἰς βασιλείαν οὐρανῶν, οὐδὲ μέρος τι λαμβάνει; τῇ θαλάσσῃ πιστεύεις μηδέν σοι χρηστὸν ἐπαγγελλομένῃ, καὶ τῷ Θεῷ οὐ πείθεις ἑκατονταπλασίονά σοι ἐπαγγελλομένῳ καὶ χαριζομένῳ; Βούλει καὶ ἑτέραν εἰκόνα τῆς τοιαύτης ἀνάγκης ὑπόθωμαί σοι; χρὴ γὰρ καὶ διὰ τῶν φοβερῶν 60.752 καὶ διὰ τῶν ἀγαθῶν πανταχόθεν ὠφελεῖσθαι τὴν σὴν ψυχήν. Ἐννόησον οὖν καὶ τοὺς ἐν τῇ γῇ πραγματευομένους, τοὺς πάντα ποιοῦντας καὶ πράττοντας ὑπὲρ τοῦ κερδᾶναί τι, τοὺς ὅρκῳ τολμῶντας, καὶ πάσης ἐπιορκίας γέμοντας ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἕνα ὀβολὸν λαβεῖν πλέον, ὅτι οἱ τοιοῦτοι τοὺς τοῦ Θεοῦ νόμους παραγράφονται. Προφῆται κηρύττουσι, κἀκεῖνοι τὰ ὦτα ἀποκλείουσι· διδάσκαλοι βοῶσι, κἀκεῖνοι τὴν νουθεσίαν μυκτηρίζουσι. Καὶ τί λοιπὸν ἐπὶ τούτων γίνεται; οὐ γὰρ ἐπὶ πάντων, ἀλλ' ἐπὶ τούτων. Περιπίπτει γὰρ πολλάκις ὁ τοιοῦτος ἔμπορος λῃσταῖς· καὶ ὁ πρὸς τὸν πλοῦτον κεχηνὼς, καὶ ἀπλήστως τὸ τῆς φιλοχρηματίας πάθος ἐνδεδυμένος, εὐθὺς ἀποδύεται τὴν τοιαύτην νόσον, καὶ γίνεται δαψιλὴς εἰς τὸ χαρίσασθαι· βλέπει γὰρ τὸ ξίφος, ὃ ἐπιφέρεται ὁ λῃστὴς, καὶ φεύγει τὸ πάθος· ἐπέρχεται ὁ λῃστὴς, καὶ εὑρίσκεται λοιπὸν ἐκεῖνος, ὥσπερ τις φιλότιμος, τὰ ἑαυτοῦ παρέχων μετὰ ἱκεσίας. Τί οὖν λέγει τῷ λῃστῇ τότε; Πάντα λάβε, καὶ μόνον τὴν ψυχήν μου χάρισαι. Ἀκουέτω καὶ οὗτος· Νῦν ἔγνως τί δώσει ἄνθρωπος ἀντάλλαγμα τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ. Λῃστῇ πάντα βουλομένῳ λαβεῖν δίδως μετὰ πάσης παρακλήσεως, τῷ βλάπτοντί σε εἰς πάντα· Θεῷ δὲ μέρος τι βουλομένῳ λαβεῖν οὐ δανείζεις, τῷ πάντα πλουσίως παρέχοντί σοι ἀγαθὰ, ἐπίγειά τε καὶ οὐράνια· ἀλλ' οὐδὲ τοσοῦτον φοβῇ τὸν Θεὸν, ὅσον τὸν λῃστήν; Καὶ ξίφος μὲν γυμνούμενον φοβῇ, γεέννης δὲ πῦρ ἀπειλούμενον καταφρονεῖς. Μὴ, παρακαλῶ, μὴ τοιοῦτοί τινες ὑμῶν γινέσθωσαν· οὐ γάρ ἐστε, μάλιστα φιλόχριστοι ὄντες· οἴδατε γὰρ πάντα τὰ ἀποβησόμενα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις. Τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν ἀσφαλίσασθε πρὸ τῆς ἐντεῦθεν ἀποδημίας, καὶ ἐπιγινώσκετε τὸν ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις Εὐαγγελίοις εἰρηκότα· Μακάριοι οἱ ἐλεήμονες, ὅτι αὐτοὶ ἐλεηθήσονται. Αὐτῷ οὖν τῷ ἐλεοῦντι καὶ τρέφοντι καὶ μὴ ὀνειδίζοντι Θεῷ δόξαν ἀναπέμψωμεν, σὺν τῷ Πατρὶ καὶ τῷ παναγίῳ καὶ ζωοποιῷ Πνεύματι, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ, καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀμήν.
