Therefore God also destroys these evil thoughts within, saying: He who looks at a woman to lust after her, and so forth. Do you see how he does not permit them to sprout, nor to take root, not lust, not anger? For he says: Whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to the hell of fire. Let the doors be closed, he says, and the evil thoughts will quickly be overcome. For from anger and lust every sin comes to be in the soul. For this reason David also prays to God, saying: Incline not my heart. Not that God inclines it—may it not be!—but what he says is this: do not permit it to be inclined or turned to evil notions; for from there is the spring of malice and wickedness.

∆ιὸ καὶ ὁ Θεὸς ἔνδον αὐτοὺς τοὺς πονηροὺς λογισμοὺς ἀναιρεῖ λέγων· ὁ ἐμβλέψας γυναικὶ πρὸς τὸ ἐπιθυμῆσαι καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς. Ὁρᾷς πῶς οὐκ ἀφίησιν αὐτοὺς βλαστῆσαι, οὐδὲ βαλεῖν ἀρχήν, οὐκ ἐπιθυμίαν, οὐκ ὀργήν; Λέγει γάρ· ὁ ὀργιζόμενος τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὑτοῦ ἔνοχος ἔσται εἰς τὴν γέενναν τοῦ πυρός. Ἔστωσαν αἱ θύραι κεκλεισμέναι, φησί, καὶ οἱ πονηροὶ λογισμοὶ ταχέως χειρωθήσονται. Ἐκ θυμοῦ γὰρ καὶ ἐπιθυμίας πᾶν ἁμάρτημα γίνεται τῇ ψυχῇ. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο καὶ ὁ ∆αβὶδ εὔχεται πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν λέγων· μὴ ἐκκλίνῃς τὴν καρδίαν μου. Οὐχ ὅτι ὁ Θεὸς ἐκκλίνει αὐτήν-μὴ γένοιτο! -ἀλλ', ὃ λέγει, τοιοῦτόν ἐστι· μὴ ἀφῇς ἐκκλιθῆναι ἢ περιτραπῆναι εἰς πονηρὰς ἐννοίας· ἐκεῖθεν γὰρ ἡ πηγὴ τῆς κακίας καὶ τῆς πονηρίας.
