Manichaeans; and they are not simply bound, but are squeezed tight, and before being brought before the one judging, he gave punishment from his conscience. This one ends his life with the uninstructed; and from the abundance of his own fatness he was cast out. [ξοδ. φ. 28 β.] For having been caught by lawlessness, and having become uninstructed, he will suffer the same things as them; for he who has his portion with murderers, is a murderer. But see how he makes death appear bitter, by saying with whom he perishes; for it is dreadful also to depart with a wicked reputation; for lawlessness, he says, which he called fatness, has multiplied them, 64.672 from which he also became flesh, from the works of the flesh, and outside the life in which he was being saved. And he perished through foolishness, not through desire; for he had a lawful enjoyment of desire, his own wife; so let no one blame nature, but his own immoderation; and this is not of nature.

CHAPTER 6.

Be not faint-hearted. [ξοδ. φ. 29 α.] Be not one who falls back, nor one who relaxes the sinews of endurance; but rouse up the body pledged by you to God, and discipline it for the rendering of the commandments committed to it. Go to the ant, O sluggard. [ξοδ. φ. 29 β.] It is a great accusation, for a human being to go to an irrational animal to be taught virtue; for he could have spoken of a greater animal, but by the humbleness of the example, he wishes to shame the idle one; but see in what he commands to imitate: in labor, in sweat; make use of righteous labors. And he said well, having no one to compel him; for when there is for it a lavish table of summer, it is not a time to suspect famine; but it does not look to the present, but takes thought for the future; and the present prosperity does not make it more careless, just as we often, living in abundance, do not have a sense of the dreadful things to come. See then, you also, lest at some time your collection having been set apart in the present, the winter should come upon you, the bitter confinement, and you suffer the fate of the virgins. -[ξοδ. φ. 30 α.] Go to the ant, that is to the nation despised by the rulers of this age, but having hope in Christ; and imitate its good way of life, and become wiser. Having no farmer, instead of having no hope in the world; nor being deceived by the sight of the lawless deeds done in life; nor being compelled by anyone, but willingly and with purpose of heart believing in God, he prepares eternal life for himself through good works. Go to the bee. [ξοδ. φ. 30 β.] Run to the church, and learn the works of light that are done in it, and how it makes its work venerable; demonstrating its way of life as sober and pure; whose labors both kings and commoners, whose commandments both rich and poor receive for their own salvation, although being weak in strength, although being humble in the world; but believing in Christ it was brought near; for for him there is a rich and costly table, at the time when he stores up; but he does not look to the present, but makes great provision for the future; in summer he prepares his food, in the harvest he makes a great deposit. See how the animal cares for the future; and you, therefore, enjoy security in the present life; but look around lest when the winter has come, your house be found empty and destitute of food. [ξοδ. φ. 29 α.] Ἔσο μὴ ἀναπίπτων, μηδὲ τοὺς τόνους τῆς καρτερίας ὑπεκλύων· ἀλλὰ τὸ παρὰ σοῦ τῷ Θεῷ ἐγγυηθὲν σῶμα διεγείρων, καὶ ὑποπιέζων πρὸς ἀπόδοσιν τῶν αὐτῷ παρατιθέντων ἐντολῶν. Ἴθι πρὸς μύρμηκα, ὦ ὀκνηρέ. [ξοδ. φ. 29 β.] Πολλὴ κατηγορία, ἄνθρωπον ὄντα πρὸς τὸ ἄλογον πορεύεσθαι ζῶον παιδευθησόμενον ἀρετήν· εἶχε μὲν γὰρ καὶ μεῖζον ζῶον εἰπεῖν, ἀλλὰ τῇ εὐτελείᾳ τοῦ παραδείγματος, καταισχῦναι βούλεται τὸν ἀργοῦντα· ὅρα δὲ κατὰ τί ζηλῶσαι κελεύει· κατὰ τὸν πόνον, κατὰ τὸν ἱδρῶτα· κέχρησο πόνοις δικαίοις. [ξοδ. φ. 30 β.] Πρόσδραμε τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ, καὶ μάθε τὰ τοῦ φωτὸς ἔργα ἐν αὐτῇ γινόμενα, τήν τε ἐργασίαν αὐτῆς ὡς σεμνὴν ποιεῖται· τὴν δὲ πολιτείαν αὐτῆς, ὡς σώφρονα καὶ ἁγνὴν, ἐπιδεικνυμένη· ἧς τοὺς πόνους βασιλεῖς τε καὶ ἰδιῶται, ἧς τὰς ἐντολὰς πλούσιοι καὶ πένητες πρὸς σωτηρίαν ἑαυτῶν λαμβάνουσι, καίπερ οὖσα τῇ ῥώμῃ ἀσθενὴς, καίπερ οὖσα ἐν κόσμῳ εὐτελής· ἀλλ' εἰς Χριστὸν πιστεύουσα προσήχθη· πάρεστι γὰρ αὐτῷ πλουσία καὶ πολυτελὴς τράπεζα, κατὰ τὸν καιρὸν ὃν ἀποτίθεται· ἀλλ' οὐ πρὸς τὸ παρὸν ὁρᾷ, ἀλλὰ τοῦ μέλλοντος ποιεῖται πολλὴν τὴν πρόνοιαν· θέρους ἑτοιμάζεται τὴν τροφὴν, πολλὴν ἐν τῷ ἀμήτῳ ποιεῖται τὴν παράθεσιν. Ὅρα πῶς μέλλοντος φροντίζει τὸ ζῶον· καὶ σὺ τοίνυν ἀπολαύεις ἀσφαλείας κατὰ τὸν παρόντα βίον· ἀλλὰ περισκόπησον μήποτε τοῦ χειμῶνος ἐπιστάντος, κενή σοι καὶ ἔρημος τῆς τροφῆς οἰκία εὑρεθῇ.
