walking in the footsteps of the apostles, the noble champions of the Trinity, who ran past the letter of the law, and received the life-giving Spirit, who like a plow dig up, and deepen, and search out, and made the meaning in the divine Scriptures brilliantly clear to all, who made the faith clear and drove out false belief, who strengthened the orthodox with the divine doctrines, and broke the heterodox with the divine arrows, who found the hidden wine of compunction, and gave drink to the thirsty flock, who took up the shepherd's pipe, and sounded the divine things; the ministers and guardians and workers of the vineyard, the orators of the divine doctrines, and swords against the heretics, who were appointed bishops by the Holy Spirit, as the holy Paul said: Shepherd the Church of God; who did not shrink from the coming afflictions, and received the promised crown of life; who fled youthful desires, and inherited the blessed hope; the generals of the great king, rich in the word of God, and poor in spirit; the imitators of the apostles and models for the faithful; the leaders of the flocks of the cities and preachers to the world; who laid down their lives for the flock, and shed their blood for the faith; who imitated that ancient Abraham, and rested in his bosom; in the same way these too are avengers of the Lord, having received the report concerning those of evil name and false doctrine, who having twisted the divine Scriptures and confounded the truth, and having turned aside from the straight path, take souls captive, dragging them into the eternal darkness of heresy, all the faithful, having gathered together at the same time in one accord, with Davidic zeal, taking the divine oracles like stones from the torrent, that is, from the Gospel, and having taken up the unbreakable faith of the Holy Trinity, drew up for battle against the innumerable and godless heretics, being of one soul, agreeing on the one thing and saying with the Apostle, One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, one Holy Spirit, the enlightenment of all, one Godhead, one God; to him be the glory and the power always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. κατ' ἴχνος τῶν ἀποστόλων βαδίζοντες, οἱ γενναῖοι τῆς Τριάδος ὑπέρμαχοι, οἱ τὸ χρῆμα τοῦ νόμου παραδραμόντες, καὶ τὸ ζωοποιὸν Πνεῦμα παραλαβόντες, οἱ δίκην ἀρότρου ἀνορύττοντες, καὶ βαθύνοντες, καὶ ἐρευνῶντες, καὶ τὸν νοῦν ἐν ταῖς θείαις Γραφαῖς πᾶσι τηλαυγῶς φανερώσαντες, οἱ τὴν πίστιν τρανώσαντες καὶ τὴν κακοπιστίαν ἀπελάσαντες, οἱ τοὺς ὀρθοδόξους τοῖς θείοις δόγμασι στηρίξαντες, καὶ τοὺς κακοδόξους τοῖς θείοις βέλεσι ῥήξαντες, οἱ τῆς κατανύξεως οἶνον κεκρυμμένον εὑρόντες, καὶ τὴν ποίμνην διψῶσαν ποτίσαντες, οἱ τὸν ποιμενικὸν αὐλὸν ἀναλαβόντες, καὶ τὰ θεῖα σαλπίσαντες· οἱ λειτουργοὶ καὶ φύλακες καὶ ἐργάται τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος, οἱ τῶν θείων δογμάτων ῥήτορες, καὶ ῥομφαῖαι κατὰ τῶν αἱρετικῶν, οἱ ὑπὸ τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος τεθέντες ἐπίσκοποι, ὡς ἔφη ὁ ἅγιος Παῦλος· Ποιμάνατε τὴν Ἐκκλησίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ· οἱ τὰς ἐπερχομένας θλίψεις μὴ παραιτησάμενοι, καὶ τὸν ἐπηγγελμένον τῆς ζωῆς στέφανον κομισάμενοι· οἱ τὰς νεωτερικὰς ἐπιθυμίας ἀποφυγόντες, καὶ τὴν μακαρίαν ἐλπίδα κληρονομήσαντες· οἱ στρατηγοὶ τοῦ μεγάλου βασιλέως, οἱ ἐν τῷ λόγῳ τοῦ Θεοῦ πλούσιοι, καὶ πτωχοὶ τῷ πνεύματι· οἱ μιμηταὶ τῶν ἀποστόλων καὶ τύποι τῶν πιστῶν· οἱ τῶν πόλεων ἀγελάρχαι καὶ τῆς οἰκουμένης κήρυκες· οἱ τὰς ψυχὰς αὐτῶν ὑπὲρ τῆς ποίμνης θέντες, καὶ τὸ αἷμα αὐτῶν ὑπὲρ τῆς πίστεως ἐκχέαντες· οἱ τὸν παλαιὸν ἐκεῖνον Ἀβραὰμ μιμησάμενοι, καὶ ἐν τοῖς κόλποις αὐτοῦ ἀναπαυσάμενοι· τὸν αὐτὸν τρόπον καὶ οὗτοι ἐκδικηταὶ τοῦ Κυρίου, τὴν φάσιν δεξάμενοι περὶ τῶν δυσωνύμων καὶ κακοδόξων, οἳ τὰς θείας Γραφὰς στρεβλώσαντες καὶ τὴν ἀλήθειαν συγχέαντες, καὶ τῆς εὐθείας ὁδοῦ ἐκνεύσαντες ψυχὰς αἰχμαλωτεύουσιν, εἰς τὸ ἀΐδιον ἕλκοντες τῆς αἱρέσεως σκότος, συναθροισθέντες ἅμα πάντες ὁμοφρόνως οἱ πιστοὶ, ∆αυϊδικὸν ζῆλον, δίκην λίθων τὰ θεῖα λόγια ἐκ τοῦ χειμάῤῥου, ἤγουν τοῦ Εὐαγγελίου, καὶ τὴν ἄῤῥηκτον πίστιν τῆς ἁγίας Τριάδος ἀναλαβόντες, παρετάξαντο πόλεμον κατὰ τῶν ἀναριθμήτων καὶ ἀθέων αἱρετικῶν, σύμψυχοι τὸ ἓν συμφωνοῦντες καὶ λέγοντες μετὰ τοῦ Ἀποστόλου, Εἷς Κύριος, μία πίστις, ἓν βάπτισμα, Εἷς Θεὸς καὶ Πατὴρ πάντων, ἓν Πνεῦμα ἅγιον, ὁ φωτισμὸς πάντων, μία θεότης, εἷς Θεός· αὐτῷ ἡ δόξα καὶ τὸ κράτος πάντοτε, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ, καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
