You certainly bear in mind, O friend, that God, guiding the magi before all others, guided them by a star; it is surely clear to all that the star is fire. Likewise the Lord called his own body of the sacred table a coal of fire. And when was this? Hear Isaiah crying out from long ago: One of the seraphim was sent to me, and in his hand he had a coal which he had taken with tongs from the altar, and he touched my lips and said to me: Behold, this has touched your lips and will take away your iniquities and will cleanse your sins. But what coal forgives sins, if not the Lord's communion? Likewise the Lord also called the baptism of our resurrection fire. And from where is this clear? Hear John the Baptist crying out: He who is mightier than I comes after me, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you in the holy Spirit and fire. But the most important of all, that in fire the holy Spirit came down. The more discerning of the Jews, having understood this wondrous working of the holy Spirit, and that the apostles, who before this spoke only one language, without an interpreter offered the teachings of piety to each one of those who approached them from different homelands in his native tongue, as you just heard, the more discerning of the Jews, being astonished, began to say to themselves: Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in our own dialect in which we were born, Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, both Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, both Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs, we hear them speaking in our own tongues the mighty works of God? The Jews were astonished seeing the apostles speaking in various tongues; wherefore being astonished they said to themselves: Are not all these who are speaking Galileans, poor and unlearned? Are they not illiterate and net-weavers? Did we not often buy fish from these men? From where do they have this knowledge? Have these men then netted tongues instead of fish? But we saw them before this as monolingual. From where do they put forth the various speeches of the universal storehouse as from the purse of their larynx? From where do they have this knowledge? Now we have learned that truly God is their teacher; now we have learned that the old things have passed away, behold, all things have become new. Peter speaks Latin, which Moses was not able to do. Did we not hear him saying: I am of a slender voice and a slow tongue? And he was begging off the divine apostolic command because of the thinness of his voice, and he did not receive correction, but remained having what nature had granted. Let us leave Moses and bless these men, or rather let us glorify the God who works wonders in them, who for the common benefit of all reshapes the single-formed vocal organ of the fishermen according to the need of the one who approaches. What such thing was granted to Abraham? These have surpassed all; they spit on money, they despise glory, they heal without reward, they fast completely, they are gladdened as if feasting, they command the dead, they drive away diseases and wither demons, being compelled to service they rejoice, being struck they turn the other cheek also, without a staff and a bag and a second tunic they journey, gold and silver and bronze they do not wish even to accept by hearing of it. Let us run to these who speak the mighty works of God, let us turn away from the rest who talk nonsense and profit no one. Καὶ πόθεν τοῦτο δῆλον; Ἄκουε Ἰωάννου τοῦ βαπτιστοῦ βοῶντος· Ἔρχεταιὀπίσω μου ὁ ἰσχυρότερός μου, οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἄξιος τὰ ὑποδήματα βαστάσαι· αὐτὸς ὑμᾶς βαπτίσει ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ καὶ πυρί. Τὸ δέ γε πάντων κεφαλαιωδέστερον, ὅτι ἐν πυρὶ κατῆλθε τὸ ἅγιον πνεῦμα. Ταύτην τὴν παράδοξον ἐνέργειαν τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος οἱ συνετώτεροι τῶν Ἰουδαίων κατανοήσαντες, καὶ ὅτι οἱ πρὸ τούτου μονόλαλοι ἀπόστολοι ἄνευ ἑρμηνευτοῦ πρὸς ἕνα ἕκαστον τῶν προσιόντων αὐτοῖς ἐκ παρηλλαγμένων πατρίδων τῇ ἐπιχωριαζούσῃ γλώσσῃ παρεῖχον τὰ διδάγματα τῆς εὐσεβείας, καθὼς ἀρτίως ἤκουες, καταπλαγέντες οἱ συνετώτεροι τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἤρξαντο λέγειν πρὸς ἑαυτούς· Οὐχ ἰδοὺ πάντες οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ λαλοῦντες Γαλιλαῖοι; Καὶ πῶς ἡμεῖς ἀκούομεν ἕκαστος τῇ ἰδίᾳ διαλέκτῳ ἡμῶν ἐν ᾗ ἐγεννήθημεν, Πάρθοι καὶ Μῆδοι καὶ Ἐλαμῖται καὶ οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν Μεσοποταμίαν, Ἰουδαίαν τε καὶ Καππαδοκίαν, Πόντον καὶ τὴν Ἀσίαν, Φρυγίαν τε καὶ Παμφυλίαν, Αἴγυπτον καὶ τὰ μέρη τῆς Λιβύης τῆς κατὰ Κυρήνην, καὶ οἱ ἐπιδημοῦντες Ῥωμαῖοι, Ἰουδαῖοί τε καὶ προσήλυτοι, Κρῆτες καὶ Ἄραβες, ἀκούομεν λαλούντων αὐτῶν ταῖς ἡμετέραις γλώσσαις τὰ μεγαλεῖα τοῦ θεοῦ; Κατεπλάγησαν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι θεωροῦντες τοὺς ἀποστόλους ποικιλογλωττοῦντας· ὅθεν καταπλαγέντες ἔλεγον πρὸς ἑαυτούς· Οὐχ ἰδοὺ πάντες οὗτοι οἱ λαλοῦντές εἰσι Γαλιλαῖοι, πένητες καὶ ἰδιῶται; Οὐκ εἰσὶν ἀγράμματοι καὶ δικτυοπλόκοι; Οὐ παρὰ τούτων συχνῶς ἰχθύας ἠγοράσαμεν; Πόθεν αὐτοῖς ἡ γνῶσις αὕτη; Μὴ ἆρα ἀντὶ ἰχθύων γλώσσας ἐσαγήνευσαν οὗτοι; Ἀλλ' ὁρῶμεν αὐτοὺς πρὸ τούτου μονογλώσσους. Πόθεν τῆς οἰκουμενικῆς ἐνθήκης τὰς διαφόρους ὁμιλίας ὡς ἐκ βαλλαντίου τοῦ λάρυγγος προβάλλονται; Πόθεν αὐτοῖς ἡ γνῶσις αὕτη; Νῦν ἐμάθομεν ὅτι ἀληθῶς θεὸς ὁ τούτων διδάσκαλος· νῦν ἐμάθομεν ὅτι τὰ ἀρχαῖα παρῆλθεν, ἰδοὺ γέγονε καινὰ τὰ πάντα. Πέτρος ῥωμαΐζει, ὅπερ Μωϋσῆς οὐκ ἴσχυσε ποιῆσαι. Οὐκ ἠκούσαμεν αὐτοῦ λέγοντος· Ἰσχνόφωνός εἰμι καὶ βραδύγλωσσος; Καὶ παρῃ τεῖτο τὴν ἀποστολικὴν θείαν πρόσταξιν διὰ τὸ τῆς φωνῆς σπινῶδες, καὶ διόρθωσιν οὐκ ἐδέξατο, ἀλλ' ἔμεινεν ἔχων ὅπερ ἡ φύσις ἐχαρίσατο. Μωσέα καταλείψωμεν καὶ τούτους μακαρίσωμεν, μᾶλλον δὲ τὸν ἐν αὐτοῖς παραδοξοποιοῦντα θεὸν δοξάσωμεν, τὸν διὰ τὴν κοινὴν τῶν πάντων ὠφέλειαν τὸ μονοειδὲς τῶν ἁλιέων γλωττιαῖον ὄργανον πρὸς τὴν χρείαν τοῦ προσιόντος μεταρρυθμίζοντα. Τί τοιοῦτον τῷ Ἀβραὰμ παρεσχέθη; Ὑπερηκόντισαν οὗτοι πάντας· χρημάτων διαπτύουσιν, δόξης καταφρονοῦσιν, ἀμισθὶ θεραπεύουσιν, δι' ὅλου νηστεύουσιν, ὡς τρυφῶντες φαιδρύνονται, τοῖς νεκροῖς ἐπιτάττουσιν, νόσους φυγαδεύουσιν καὶ δαίμονας μαραίνουσιν, ἀγγαρευόμενοι χαίρουσιν, ῥαπιζόμενοι ἀντιστρέφουσι καὶ τὴν ἄλλην σιαγόνα, ἄνευ ῥάβδου καὶ πήρας καὶ διπλοῦ χιτῶνος πορεύονται, χρυσὸν καὶ ἄργυρον καὶ χαλκὸν οὐδὲ ἀκοῇ προσδέξασθαι βούλονται. Τούτοις προσδράμωμεν τοῖς λαλοῦσι τὰ μεγαλεῖα τοῦ θεοῦ, τοὺς λοιποὺς ἀποστραφῶμεν τοὺς φλυαροῦντας καὶ μηδὲν ὀνοῦντας. Ἀλλὰ ταῦτα μὲν οἱ συνετώτεροι τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἔλεγον, οἱ δὲ παράνομοι πάλιν τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐξ
