he valued at three hundred denarii; I have already persuaded Judas to value the ointment at three hundred denarii, and to sell the master of the ointment for thirty pieces of silver. I have need of haste; I will construct a cross; he took Lazarus, I will bring him down whole, I will number him with the dead, so that he may learn not to campaign against a greater one. But the powers below said to him: Do you wish to drag down the whole Jesus here, and do you wish to number him with the dead? See that you do not plot against yourself; you have experience of him, you wrestled with him in the wilderness; did you not approach a third time and fall threefold? If he can do so much while absent, if he should come down, what are you going to do? For these reasons and for similar ones the Lord raises Lazarus, in order to provoke the devil to hew a cross, so that the curse might become a blessing and the cross a help to all. For the resurrection of Lazarus sharpened the devil, enraged the Pharisees, fully assured Martha, glorified Mary, prefigured the resurrection, and showed the disciples to be stronger. But someone may certainly say: And how did the resurrection of Lazarus show the disciples to be stronger? How? Listen in brief. You all know clearly that while the Lord was beyond the Jordan, Lazarus died in Bethany. Therefore the Lord, wishing to fully assure his own disciples above all that he was not in part but everywhere as God, and that nothing that happened escaped his notice, says to his own disciples: Lazarus our friend has fallen asleep, but I am going that I may awaken him. But the apostles, hearing this in a more human way, paying attention to the words and not to the power, respond more naturally to the Lord saying: Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be saved. Nevertheless tell us, Master; you are here beyond the Jordan, Lazarus is in Bethany, how did you know that he has fallen asleep? And Christ said to them: I told you that he has fallen asleep, and I rejoice for your sake, so that you may know that I was not there in body; understand the uncircumscribable power of my divinity, that I am both here and there and everywhere. And so that you may become witnesses not only of words but also of deeds, let us go to him. Therefore Jesus, having come to the tomb, cried out: Lazarus, come forth, and immediately he came out, having recognized the voice of the creator. He came out with his hands bound and his feet with grave-clothes, and his face was bound about with a napkin. O the excess of wonders. What more was there to wonder at? The one raised from the dead, the bound one running? But so that the unbelieving Jews might not think the matter a fantasy, he commanded them to loose him with their own hands, saying: Loose him and let him go. Receive him, he says, as a witness; he himself will make known to you who I am, the one who rules over the heavenly and the earthly and the subterranean. To Christ himself be the glory with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
τριακοσίων διετιμήσατο δηναρίων· ἤδη συνέπεισα τὸν Ἰούδα τὸ μὲν μύρον τριακοσίων διατιμήσασθαι δηναρίων, τὸν δὲ δεσπότην τοῦ μύρου τριάκοντα ἀργυρίων πωλῆσαι. Σπουδῆς μοι χρεία· σταυρὸν κατασκευάσω· αὐτὸς τὸν Λάζαρον ἔλαβεν, ἐγὼ ὅλον αὐτὸν συγκαθελῶ, τοῖς νεκροῖς αὐτὸν συναριθμήσω, ἵνα μάθῃ κατὰ μείζονος μὴ στρατεύεσθαι. Αἱ δὲ κάτω δυνάμεις πρὸς αὐτόν· Ὅλον τὸν Ἰησοῦν ὧδε κατασπάσαι βούλει, καὶ νεκροῖς αὐτὸν συναριθμῆσαι βούλει; Βλέπε μὴ καθ' ἑαυτοῦ σκέπτῃ· ἔχεις αὐτοῦ πεῖραν, ἐπάλαισας αὐτῷ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ· οὐχὶ τρίτον προσῆλθες καὶ τρισσῶς ἔπεσας; Εἰ ἀπὼν τοσαῦτα δύναται, ἐὰν κατέλθῃ, τί μέλλεις πράττειν; ∆ιὰ ταῦτα καὶ τὰ παραπλήσια τούτων ἐγείρει τὸν Λάζαρον ὁ κύριος, ἵνα τὸν διάβολον ἐρεθίσῃ σταυρὸν πελεκῆσαι, ἵνα γένηται ἡ κατάρα εὐλογία καὶ ὁ σταυρὸς πᾶσι βοηθός. Ἡ γὰρ τοῦ Λαζάρου ἀνάστασις τὸν μὲν διάβολον ἐδρίμυξεν , τοὺς δὲ φαρισαίους ἐκάπνισεν, τὴν δὲ Μάρθαν ἐπληροφόρησεν, τὴν δὲ Μαριὰμ ἐδόξασεν, τὴν δὲ ἀνάστασιν προηρραβωνίσατο, τοὺς δὲ μαθητὰς κραταιοτέρους ἀπέδειξεν. Ἔστι δὲ πάντως εἰπεῖν τινα· Καὶ πῶς ἡ ἀνάστασις τοῦ Λαζάρου τοὺς μαθητὰς κραταιοτέρους ἀπέδειξεν; Πῶς; Ἄκουε διὰ βραχέων. Ἴστε πάντες σαφῶς ὅτι πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου τυγχάνοντος τοῦ κυρίου Λάζαρος ἀπέθανεν ἐν Βηθανίᾳ. Βουλόμενος τοίνυν ὁ κύριος τοὺς ἑαυτοῦ μαθητὰς πληροφορῆσαι πρὸ πάντων ὅτι οὐκ ἦν ἐν μέρει ἀλλὰ πανταχοῦ ὡς θεός, καὶ ὅτι οὐδὲν αὐτὸν λέληθε τῶν γινομένων, λέγει πρὸς τοὺς ἑαυτοῦ μαθητάς· Λάζαρος ὁ φίλος ἡμῶν κεκοίμηται, ἀλλὰ πορεύομαι ἵνα ἐξυπνίσω αὐτόν. Οἱ δὲ ἀπόστολοι ἀνθρωπινώτερον ἀκούσαντες, τοῖς ῥήμασι καὶ οὐ τῇ δυνάμει προσεσχηκότες, φυσικώτερον ἀποκρίνονται πρὸς τὸν κύριον λέγοντες· Κύριε, εἰ κεκοίμηται, σωθήσεται. Ὅμως λέγε ἡμῖν, ἐπιστάτα· σὺ ἐνταῦθα πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, Λάζαρος ἐν Βηθανίᾳ, πῶς ἔγνως ὅτι κεκοίμηται; Ὁ δὲ Χριστὸς πρὸς αὐτούς· Εἶπον ὑμῖν ὅτι κεκοίμηται, καὶ χαίρω δι' ὑμᾶς, ἵνα γνῶτε ὅτι οὐκ ἤμην ἐκεῖ σώματι· κατανοήσατε τὴν ἀπερίγραπτον τῆς θεότητός μου δύναμιν, ὅτι καὶ ὧδε κἀκεῖ εἰμι καὶ πανταχοῦ. Ὅπως δὲ μὴ μόνον τῶν ῥημάτων ἀλλὰ καὶ τῶν πραγμάτων ἐπόπται γενήσεσθε, ἄγωμεν πρὸς αὐτόν. Ἐλθὼν τοίνυν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον ἐβόησεν· Λάζαρε, δεῦρο ἔξω, καὶ εὐθέως ἐξῆλθε γνωρίσας τοῦ δημιουργοῦ τὴν φωνήν. Ἐξῆλθεν ἔχων τὰς χεῖρας δεδεμένας καὶ τοὺς πόδας κειρίαις, καὶ ἡ ὄψις αὐτοῦ σουδαρίῳ περιεδέδετο. Ὢ τῆς ὑπερβολῆς τῶν θαυμάτων. Τί πλέον ἦν θαυμάσαι; Τὸν ἐγερθέντα ἐκ νεκρῶν, τὸν δεδεμένον τρέχοντα; Ἀλλ' ἵνα μὴ φαντασίαν τὸ πρᾶγμα νομίσωσιν οἱ ἄπιστοι Ἰουδαῖοι, οἰκείαις χερσὶ τοῦτον λῦσαι προσέταξεν αὐτοῖς εἰπών· Λύσατε αὐτὸν καὶ ἄφετε ὑπάγειν. Αὐτόν φησι μάρτυρα δέξασθε· αὐτὸς ὑμᾶς γνωρίσει τίς εἰμι, ὁ δεσπόζων οὐρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων. Αὐτῷ τῷ Χριστῷ ἡ δόξα σὺν τῷ πατρὶ καὶ τῷ ἁγίῳ πνεύματι εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀμήν.
