fortunate, Coele-Syria, Commagene and all Phoenicia; and in his part is the river Euphrates. And from the tribe of Shem appeared a giant-born man, named Kronos by his father, as an eponym of the wandering star, who was first appointed to rule and be king of the Assyrians. And he had a wife Semiramis, also called Rhea, from whom he had a son, who was called Zeus, also Picus, having married his own sister Hera. Kronos also had another son, by name Aphron, to whom he allotted the land towards Libya; who married Astynome, begetting from her a daughter, whom he called Aphrodite. But Kronos, driven from his kingdom by his own son Zeus, left Zeus and Ninus, his sons, with their mother Rhea, to rule the Assyrians; and he himself, going down to the west, rules and reigns over all of Italy. Zeus therefore, withdrawing from the Assyrians, went to his father; and he yielded to him the rule over all of Italy, and having ruled for many years and having died, he is laid to rest in Crete. After Ninus, Thourras reigned over the Assyrians, whom they renamed Ares as he was most warlike and brave; whom the Assyrians renamed the god Baal and, having set up a statue, worship. After the death of Zeus, Faunus his16 son reigned, who was renamed Hermes; for he was very learned and mathematical; who also invented for men the making of gold from base metals. To Ham, the second son of Noah, fell these lands by name, Egypt, Ethiopia which looks towards the Indians, another Ethiopia, whence flows the river of the Ethiopians, Erythraea which looks towards the east, Thebaid, Libya which extends as far as Cyrene, Marmaris, Syrtis, Libya which extends from the river as far as the promontory of Syrtis, Numidia, Massyris, Mauritania which extends as far as the Pillars of Heracles opposite Gades. And it has in the parts opposite the north, along the sea, Cilicia, Pamphylia, Pisidia, Mysia, Lycaonia, Phrygia, Cabalia, Lycia, Caria, Lydia, another Mysia, the Troad, Aeolis, Bithynia, the ancient Phrygia. And it has also the islands Sardinia, Crete, Cyprus, and the river Geon, which is called the Nile. To Japheth, the third son of Noah, fell these lands by name, Media, Albania Amazonis, Armenia minor and major, Cappadocia, Paphlagonia, Galatia, Colchis, Bosphorus, Maeotis, Derbis, Sarmatis, Taurianis, Bastranis, Scythia, Thrace, Macedonia, Dalmatia, Molossis, Thessaly, Locris, Boeotia, Aetolia, Attica, Achaia, Pel17 lene, which is called the Peloponnesus, Arcadia, Epirus, Illyris, Lychnitis, Adriace, from which is the Adriatic sea. With it are also these islands: Britannia, Sicily, Euboea, Rhodes, Chios, Lesbos, Cythera, Zacynthus, Cephalonia, Ithaca, Corcyra and the Cyclades, and a certain part of Asia called Ionia. And there is a river in the same parts, the Tigris, which divides Media and Babylonia. And from the sons of Japheth, from Gomer, the Gomareis, who are now the Galatians, from Magog, the now Scythians, and from Madai, the Medes, from Javan, the Ionians and the other Greeks, from Tubal, the Thobeloi, who are now the Iberians, from Meshech, the Meschenoi, who are now the Cappadocians, whence also Mazaca is their metropolis, from Theras, the Thracians, from Tharros, the Tharseis, who are now the Cilicians, from whom also Tarsus, among the Cilicians, is a most notable city. And when the aforesaid division had been made, Shem, having settled where his father also did, divides the portion of his inheritance among his own children, but Canaan, son of Ham, seeing the land by Lebanon, that it was both good and fertile and greatly different from his own, camps there, having cut off this portion from the descendants of Shem, although his father and his brothers forbade him, and reminded him of the curses which his fa18 ther Noah pronounced against those who transgressed his decree. Thence all that land was called Canaanite. The three sons of Noah, therefore, having divided the world in three parts, as has been said, it is necessary now to go back to the
