he forgot the contest of Antony, but came to his aid. So, looking up, he saw the roof as if opening, and a certain ray of light coming down to him. And the demons suddenly disappeared; and the pain of his body immediately ceased, and the house was whole again. But Antony, perceiving the help, and breathing more freely, and being relieved of the pains, prayed to the vision that had appeared, saying: Where were you? Why did you not appear from the beginning, to make my pains cease? And a voice came to him: Antony, I was here, but I waited to see your contest. Since, therefore, you endured, and were not defeated, I will be a helper to you always, and I will make you renowned everywhere. Hearing these things, he arose and prayed; and he gained so much strength, that he perceived that he had more power in his body than he had before. He was then about thirty-five years old. And going forth on the next day, he was still more zealous for piety, and having gone to that old man, he asked to dwell in the desert with him. But when he declined on account of both his age and because such a custom did not yet exist, he himself immediately set out for the mountain. But again the enemy, seeing his zeal and wanting to hinder it, cast in his path the illusion of a large silver dish. But Antony, understanding the art of the hater of good, stood, and looking at the dish, he rebuked the devil in it, saying: Whence a dish in the desert? This is not a well-trodden road, nor is there a trace of any who have traveled here; having fallen, it could not have escaped notice, being so large. And also the one who lost it, turning back and searching, would have found it, since the place is deserted. This is a trick of the dev 26.861 il. You will not hinder my zeal with this, devil. For may this be with you for destruction. And as Antony said this, it vanished like smoke before a fire. Then again, he saw no longer an illusion, but real gold thrown in the path as he was going away. Whether the enemy showed it, or some better power was training the athlete, and showing the devil that he did not care even for real money; neither did he himself report, nor have we learned, except that what appeared was gold. And Antony marveled at the quantity, but as if stepping over fire, he passed it by so as not even to turn; but even hastened his pace so much as to hide and escape the place. Therefore, strengthening his purpose more and more, he set out for the mountain. And having found a deserted fort, full of reptiles on account of its age, on the other side of the river, he moved himself there and dwelt in it. The reptiles, therefore, as if someone were chasing them, immediately departed; but he, having blocked up the entrance, and having laid up bread for six months (for the Thebans do this, and often they remain unharmed even for a whole year), having water within, remained inside alone as if retiring into a sanctuary, neither going out himself nor seeing any of those who came. He therefore continued practicing asceticism in this way for a long time; receiving bread from above from the roof only twice a year. And his acquaintances who came to him, since he did not allow them to enter, often spending days and nights outside, would hear as it were crowds inside making a din, striking, uttering piteous voices, and crying out: Depart from what is ours; what have you to do with the desert? You cannot bear our plotting. At first, therefore, those outside thought that there were some men fighting with him, and that they had entered to him by means of ladders; but when, peeping through some hole, they saw no one, then 26.864 indeed considering them demons
